Incidentally, I mailed you quite a while ago with an image of the front cover of Brendan & Molly the Untold Story which I possess. I see it's still not up on the site so wonder if you ever got it? Trouble is, the book is now buried somewhere and it could take me a while to find it if you want another scan.

Comments:FOR SALE: WANDING VALLEY HOSPITAL!!!!!!

Article from: Hawkesbury Gazette
Date: 16 July 2007
Original Author: Shannon Tonkin

To the outside world it's Wandin Valley Hospital in the long-running drama A Country Practice. But to the O'Brien family it's Clare House and has been their home for the past 28 years.

On July 28 [2007] the piece of family and television history is up for auction after owners Ron and Trish O'Brien decided it was time to move to something smaller.

The house and the O'Briens enjoyed a certain degree of celebrity status during the show's golden reign on Channel Seven in the 1980s.

It started when a man appeared on their doorstep one day in 1981 and said he was doing a story about nursing in the bush.

"In less than six weeks, we had film crews here," Mrs O'Brien said.

"They only ever took footage of the outside of our house, but we had our fair share of actors and actresses on the property.

"They'd be here all day filming for hours, and when you saw it on TV there'd only be five or six seconds of our house, but it was great to see it on the screen."

Mrs O'Brien said many visitors wanted to see 'inside the Wandin Valley Hospital', expecting it to have been a real hospital at some stage.

"Contrary to popular belief, it never was a hospital, it's always been a home, but we'd have plenty of people knocking at the door asking to see inside the Wandin Valley hospital," she said.

Situated in Oakville between Rouse Hill and McGraths Hill in the Hawkesbury Valley, Clare House was built by Andrew Thompson between 1810 and 1830.

Originally on 105 hectares, the property was sold off in parts and when the O'Briens bought it in 1979, the house was surrounded by 3.2 hectares.

The O'Brien family of Ron, Trish and their six children moved in early in 1979 but Mr and Mrs O'Brien say it's now time to move on.

"It's a five-bedroom house and there's only the two of us here now. We want a place that's all on one level, without stairs," Mr O'Brien said.

"It's a big change for us, but we're looking forward to it."

I have the last episode and everytime I watch it I cry because I loved it so much.
I collect everything I can find that relates to the show.
When I was A teenager I met "Cookie" and "Bob", they came to a fund raiser I had organised.
Only three years ago I watched Georgie Parker in the "The Man From Snowy River Spectatular" and she was wonderful.
When I speak to other people about A Country Practice it always brings about long conversations and pleasent memories.
It is wonderful to know that there are still so many people like me and such a wonderful web site to catch up with fellow fans.

I have some fantastic news!

MRA sent me an email, dated 24 January 2007, and they informed that they are releasing two 12 disc box sets in April 2007. They will sell for around $100 Australian.

The breakdown is as follows:
* A Country Practice - Series 2 - Part 2 - 1982 (eps 45 - 106)
* A Country Practice - Series 3 - Part 1 - 1983 (eps 107 - 148)

MRA plan to release further box sets during 2007, depending on sales, which they say look very positive. At this stage, they have secured the rights up until episode 532.

I now look forward to April 2007:)

Comments:First of all: top compliment for this site and your longstanding commitment!! Im originally Swiss, lived and worked in Australia for several years in the seventies and this country was a mind-opener to me! The way of life, the philosophy and true pioneering spirit (="have a go at anything mate, and we'll give you a hand!") which I experienced provided an enormous trigger to my life energies and plans. After returning to Europe I was lucky enough to "fall" into this TV-series, where I re-discovered just the qualities I had experienced in this great country. No neeed to say I got hooked! Ever since I have kept heartwarming memories of many details of the characters and wildlife etc, shown in ACP. (Unfortunately the recently issued DVDs only work for Region4 and Europe is Region2: so no compatibility!) Now, since January 07 the German pay-TV 'PREMIERE / Series' starts again showing the (early) episodes on weekdays. So, hopefully the fan group here will grow and with this the pressure to produce DVDs also for the European Region! I booked a yearly Abo especially to see ACP, however due to technical software download problems of the provider, I already missed out on some. I'm hoping (and saving up) to re-visit Oz in October 07 and ACP would be such an excellent introduction for my travel partner who is a novice to Oz. For years I have travelled for an international Organization, however, what many of you have stated is true for me too: No other show has ever surpassed the lasting impression which the "Wandin Valley Characters" have made on me in terms of human warmth and authenticity! Thanks for keeping up your precious resource site!

Comments:Congrats on a great site!

I grew up watching this show and I loved it!
When it was shown in the mornings a few years back I used to watch it, and if I couldn't because of work I would tape it and watch it when I got home.
I used to live in Ferntree Gully, at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges, which is not far from where the later Channel 10 series was filmed.
I remember one time when they were filming not far from where I lived, I think it was a car accident, and they blocked off the road so we had to go a different way.

I really miss A Country Practice!

For more episode guides have a look at this site.

I am proud to say that I watched the famous Molly-death episode the first time it was transmitted, and yes it was indeed one of the defining televisual moments of my life. I have so many clear memories of the early years, but I admit to "losing the faith" later on, when the stories got a bit too involved and contrived. The early ones may have been corny, but they got you in!
Goodness what nostalgia. I feel a tear coming on. Fatso, Doris, Esme, Vicki, Simon ... I miss you all.

Comments:Hi! I live in Australia.

A Country Practice will always have a special fondness with me, as I grew up with that show as a child and then as a youth. During my mid-teens, from 1989 to 1992, I wrote to the stars of the show. Many of the stars wrote to me and I still cherish those letters and autographs today. The stars who wrote to me include Brian Wenzel, Lorrae Desmond, Joyce Jacobs, Georgie Parker, Georgina Fisher, Jon Concannon, Anne Looby, Jamie Croft and Judith McGrath. It was during this time, I had posters of the show on my bedroom wall.

Unfortunately, the show got axed and I moved on with the rest of my life. However, I always thought back to my youth, as I always felt safe in Wandin Valley and its characters. In fact, the social and political issues dealt with by this series influenced me to become a Social Worker, from which I am practicing today.

In recent times, I bought series 1 and 2 of A Country Practice and I am in heaven!:) In Australia, there is a competition in which one can enter and visit a country destination. Imagine to my surprise when one of those destinations is Whyalla, South Australia!:) I live in Whyalla. In more ways than one, A Country Practice is connected to me.

I got mine from DVD Crave, and was very impressed with the service - received it 3 days after postage! Plus, with the relatively weak Aussie currency, it cost me about £16 each series. Bargain.

Also, I have had no problems on my DVD player at all.

Hope this helps.

I am able to play them on my computer's DVD player despite my DVD player being set for Region 1 and fans outside of Australia have been able to play them on their DVD players. Rather than waiting for them to come to the UK, you might want to order them from Australia (there are links to Australia sellers on the main WVBNH page).

MRA Entertainment will release the first two years on April 3rd, as two box sets, plus we are giving away 8 weekends for 2 in the country to tie in with the launch including a weekend at the Wandin Valley winery! We are hoping to be able to release further series of ACP over the next 12months. Series 2 has 1500 mins of footage so I hope you all enjoy it!

Comments:Dear Adam (adamsumm),

there are no tours that I am aware of that take in the ACP sites. I can give you the whereabouts of a few of the places in the series though.

The two storey brick building that you refer to is (or at least was) called the "Swallows Inn" or something like that. It is located almost directly opposite Windsor court house on the corner of North and Arndell Streets. The hospital is actually known as "Clare House" and is located in Clare Crescent at Oakville (not far from Windsor). As for the rest of the locations, you'll need to head to Pitt Town. You could basically call Pitt Town "Wandin Valley" for it is where the vast majority of outdoor shots took place. The opening iconic image that pans across the "valley" was shot behind the churches that are situated on the SW side of Bathurst St in Pitt Town.

I hope all this helps and is of interest to you. If ever you are in the neighbourhood drop me a line and I'll point you in the right direction.

Take care.

Comments:I had been looking for any info on ACP DVDs and decided to look up ACP on the web to see if I could find any info and found your site! I can't believe there are "others' like me out there! I still think about the show and always wished that I could live in Wandin Valley and have all those wonderful people as my friends. Absolutely loved Dr Terrance Elliot and Shirley Gilroy! Such a wonderful town. I was fortunate to meet up with the majority of the cast at various promotional events in the 80's.
I am glad I have accessed this site and read the emails as now I see that the first 3 seasons are coming out on DVD - I will certainly line up to get the set! I rang up Channel 7 a couple of years ago when they took off ACP from the 0930 weekday timeslot and was told that the ratings were bad for that time of the morning! Can you believe that! Who cares about ratings at that time of the day!
I also read of the death of Sophie Heathcote in the TV Week - what a shocker!
Anyhow, I will keep on looking at this site on a regular basis from now onwards.

I grew up with A Country Practice here in the U.K. and was always taking time off from school to watch the adventures of my heroes Cookie,Bob and Esme. Who could forget the wonderfull Loopy Lucy played by the lovely Georgie Parker and Sophie's Steve was just the dream come true for a boy of my age.
It was my favorate soap even better than Neibours or Home and Away put together and it was a shame that it finished after such a long run.
Last of all i would like to thank everyone who was involved with A Country Practice for the sheer enjoyment that it brought me and that includes the actors who are sadly no longer with us.
So Best Wishes to whoever reads this and all the very best.

Comments:Hi, I really thinink that ACP was one of the best programmes ever! In fact "alright Es?" is still a common catchphrase around our office! I would love to see repeats from the beginning on Channel 5. I have a vague recollection that Grananda Plus started showing them on Sky many moons ago, but not for long.

I got into ACP when there was a great mystery of who shot Dot's cow, but was completely hooked with the programme after Bob and Cookie's scam with Vlioozal the alien from Enezorek. Anybody else remember that one? I hope you maintain this site - I have added it to my favourites and will be checking back frequeently. Can't seem to confirm the mailing list - is this still running?

I was very sad to hear of the death of "Bob." I always thought of him as the sort of bloke I would like to buy a pint for. I know it was just a character, but ACP was my escape from reality and for one hour a week, I used to be a resident of Wandin Valley. I can't imagine any other programme catching my imagination in th same way.

Anyway, Sorry to go on - I just enjoyed sharing my thoughts on ACP, and it would be nice to hear from anybody else who feels the same. I thought I was the only one!

Comments:To Julian, I hope this helps you somewhat.

You'll find Wandin Valley Hospital on Clare Rd at Oakville, it's actually called Clare House. It's still very identifiable and is a private house.

If you go to Pitt Town, which is NE of Windsor in New South Wales, you will find the majority of places used as parts of the township of Wandin Valley. If you head to the church on the left hand side of Bathurst rd, approximately 100m past the intersection with Church St, you will see that it is the church used for many of the weddings and such that occurred during the series. There is also another church across the road which I believe was used a couple of times. Even more spectacular is the view you can see behind the first church I mentioned. If you walk past the church and look towards the Blue Mountains (SW) you will face that immortal image we were welcomed with at the beginning of each episode.

If you then go around the corner into Buckingham St and stop opposite Pitt Town Primary School you should see Frank and Shirley Gilroy's house. It is on the corner of Chatham St.

If you go back to Bathurst St at the junction of Eldon St, you will find the Wandin Valley town centre. It has barely changed from the way it was and you can still visit the pub which was (if I remember rightly) the general store and Muldoon's office (?). Directly across the road is a tin shed/barn which you should recognise simply as a common backdrop to many a shot.

Apart from those the only other places I can tell you about are Thompson Square in Windsor, at the intersection of George and Bridge Sts. This area was occasionally used in the show. If you head over the river to Freemans Reach Rd you will find, perhaps 3km along on the left (from Windsor), the leaning house which was used as Percy's house later in the series.

Finally there is a hall in Freemans Reach Park on Gorricks Ln which (again if I remember rightly) was used later in the series as a youth hall and where the final scene was shot.

So I hope that helps you, and anyone else that may be interested, in your endeavour to source the wonderful locations of this wonderful series.

Take care.

When I first started watching in 1981, my 23 year old son was a baby. I used to watch the programme during his lunchtime sleep. Instead of doing the household chores I just indulged myself and relaxed watching the telly.
I guess I identified most with Molly, and I was just a little in love with Brendan too.

Country Practice star dies
Sunday Herald Sun
By Ian Haberfield
September 19, 2004

ACTOR Gordon Piper, best known for his role as Bob Hatfield in the long-running TV series A Country Practice, has died aged 72.
Piper, who suffered chronic diabetes, had a heart attack on Wednesday and died in Blacktown Hospital, Sydney, yesterday.

He appeared on A Country Practice for more than a decade, playing Wandin Valley's plumber.

But his career was overshadowed five years ago when he was charged with sexually assaulting a girl, 11, at his Sydney home. He was found not guilty, but the ordeal left him bitter.

"Now I know how Lindy Chamberlain felt - she was innocent," he said as left Penrith District Court.

Piper, who joined A Country Practice in 1981 and stayed with the show for 11years, enjoyed a career that lasted almost 50 years. He first took to the stage in 1944 and began performing variety shows at hotels in 1952.

But it was with A Country Practice that he found national - and international - fame.

In the series, Piper played opposite his mate "Cookie" - actor Syd Heylen, who died in 1996.

Bob and Cookie, the club barman, teamed up for a string of doomed money-making schemes.

The plans usually involved Valley gossip Esme Watson, played by Joyce Jacobs.

Over the 900-plus episodes of the drama, Piper's Hatfield became one of the best-loved characters on Australian television.

The actor was plagued by ill health in later life. As well as battling diabetes, Piper had his left leg amputated because of circulatory problems.

Comments:I've gotta tell you, I never get sick of ACP and your site! I'm always amazed when I hear about people from overseas liking our drama shows so much. I know we're popular in Britain thanks to Neighbours, Home and Away, Prisoner and others and I always feel proud of our achievements, the best of which being ACP of course.

As for my favourite episode, it'd have to be the one when all the girls get drunk before Vicky's wedding. I've watched it dozens of times and I never fail to crack up!

Anyway, take care and keep up the good work.

Your Aussie friend,

Ben

The repeats bring back many great childhood memorys and it would be great to see new episodes made using the original cast members on screen children like Tom, Charlotte and Chloe all grown up and following in there parents footsteps...BUT none like muldoone!!! and more like the Esme watson's!!!!
I think that would be GREAT,
and so would a beer with Cookie at the Wandin Valley pub ya flamin galah

Comments:I'm so rapt to have found an ACP website. I looked a few years ago, but found nothing. My dream all through primary school was to grow up and move to Wandin Valley, but that was brought to a sad end when the show concluded on the night of my last Year 12 exam in 1993. However, I was thrilled to be able to watch ACP repeats on Channel 7 over the past few years. How well it holds up!

Just wanted to say hello and am very curious about where you are and what you've been up to. Please write.

When i watch it now it makes me relise just how much the world has changed and how much i wish i could turn back the hands of time and go and live in a "wandin valley" somewhere! That community spirit has now gone but we are lucky to have tv shows like ACP to remember it by!

I agree with your 'rant' I have a hotmail account just for other things, not for mail at all, in fact each time a mail comes in I am not aware of it, as it goes into the total garbage heap...not even needing me to delete stuff.

Hope you are able to have time (when do we have time) to continue on with our 'project' do let me know ok?

Comments:Hi Kitty. I have been trying to email you but keep getting "mail returned" notices.
So I have copied my email to here !!

Came across your ACP site via IMDB while I was searching for the name of a singer who once guest starred in ACP. I know his name but am trying to remember the song he sung !! His name was Jeff St John.

Anyway - I forgot all about that as I became more and more engrosed in you amazing detailed site.

I have a page dedicated to the gorgeous Jon Blake who played Franks replacement and Judys suitor for a while. For the time being its just pics as I built it to show him off to some american friends. But I want to get all the articles I have on him out and put a proper bio up etc and updates about his medical condition etc.
http://libranmonkey.homestead.com/jonblake.html

I have my fave eps on tape - mostly stuff like Mollys death, all the weddings, and the Jon Blake eps.

What I do have that may interest you - is a huge collection of magazine articles from "back then". I can scan them all up and post you a cd if you are interested ? I cant say I can do it immediately as I have just moved house and I cant find the box with my scanner in it !! But I can certainly do it one day if you are interested.

Anyway - it was great to come across such a great site.

Comments:This is a great website and it has given me great pleasure to read through it. It has also brought back many fond memories of when I first started watching ACP in my mid-teens around 1985 at home in Ireland. ACP was such a fantastic show, the characters and stories were great. What I liked most about ACP was the fact that it combined serious issues with funny subplots. I used to race home from school to watch the show in the early evening. I have never watched any 'soaps' (Australian or other!) since!

I am seriously interested in getting tapes of ACP. I would be interested to hear from anyone who could give me video-tapes of any of the episodes, of course, I would cover the cost of the tape and post and packaging! I am now living in Singapore and, unfortunately, there is no chance that any re-runs would be shown here!

Comments:Great Site,
I am now 22 and used to love watching ACP, I still have my copy of the 10 year magazine! My favourite characters were Kate and Harry, I used to keep a little photo of him in my wallet. I cried so much when I forgot to tape the wedding episode and had to get my Dad to advertise in the paper to find someone that had a copy! hahaha the things you do! I was disappointed at the way they ended Kate and Harrys relationship when the new series began. I was angry as I felt it wasn't the way Kate would have been. Anyway, its a cool site you have done a great job.

Who could forget joyces marvellous role as Ms Watson or Sydney Halen as Cookie!! I can still hear her say "Vernon" Frank Gilroy is another personal favorite. Well done Brian Wenzel you are a legend in Australian televison!!!

In return, she sent me an audio tape with most of the cast telling me a little bit about themselves. A great program, I think there should be more new episodes made.

I'm a huge fan of ACP from Australia, and I have heaps of the shows on video which I watch all the time and never get sick of...

Anyway, thought I'd let you know that Anne Looby, who played Anna Lacey in the later years of the series is now on All Saints, playing the new CEO of the hospital. Her first show was screened in Australia last night and she looks like she's gonna be a good character in All Saints. Her name in the show is Julia Archer.

Keep up the good work.

Comments:Hi There!
I absolutely love this site!! ACP is my all time favorite TV show :) I'd be more than happy to hear from anyone who would like to chat :)
I'm in Australia and grew up with the show- I have many fond memories of watching it with my Nan, who also loved the show. Sadly she passed away in 1992 and I've 'carried the torch' for her ever since.
I am so Pleased that reruns are on now, I'm getting to catch up with a lot of the events and Characters I remembed so well. :)
I had the good fortune to briefly meet Joan Sydney in the late 80's, I have a personally Autographed B&W publicity photo of her :) Also as part of a Telethon here over period of about 4 years I spoke to Brian Wenzal twice and Syd Heylen once.
Anyway, again, Great Work on this site- I have it bookmarked and check back often. Keep it up! :))
