Her brothers stayed on the family farm, Ted and Art. Uncle Art died recently. Of course I realize Their name was not originally Johnson, it was Sampila(sp?). Lula Johnson married Elmer Luoma and later settled in the Clarkston Heights, Washington state.There were likely many Finns who became Johnson when they came to the US.Your website reminded me how important it is to pass this information along to the next generation. Your description of your wedding was so humorous that I had to look at all the pics there, as well as link to your homepage, only to discover your amazing photojournals. The 1000 species project is a great idea -- I am enjoying the pictures, and I will continue to follow your progress. Your photography just gets better and better. Have you thought of doing a display on campus? Or publishing a book? You need a wider audience for your wonderful photos! Here in rural Illinois we live on a tiny man-made lake, so once in awhile we do have some interesting birds besides the ubiquitous Canada geese, the resident great blue heron, and the usual back yard birds. Right now a snow goose is hanging around, and last year we saw a couple of trumpeter swans for awhile, plus several kinds of ducks. We have a great view from our kitchen table, so we always have our binoculars and bird book right there, ready to be used. This year we put up a purple martin house, and it immediately attracted purple martins. However, it also attracted sparrows, and for a few days there were feathers flying until the two kinds of birds staked out their own territory. Best wishes -- and greetings to everyone at SJC. The missing bark photos you have posted are likely the work of a Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum). I have observed the same markings in my trees and wondered what caused that. I finally caught the culprit in action one evening, a big, fat porcupine. |

I live in the Boston area and publish seafood.com news; and I am coming to Sitka for a couple of days this week for the N. Pacific Fisheries Council meetings.
Since I always bring my camera, and not having been to Sitka (although I have often been in Kodiak, Anchorage, and a couple of times to Unalaska)- I went onine to look for what birding opportunities may be available, given I will probably have just a single morning or afternoon to do much. So your site was great as it gave me a heads up as to what birds are around. My primary interest is sea birds on this trip, so i wonder if it is possible to see puffins etc., or if there is a charter that does this kind of thing. Anyway, thanks for the great pictures. I found a picture of lingonberry from your works. I am so impressed and love your website. Can I use that picture of lingonberry for a lecture about the topic of "cranberry and urinary tract infection", which will discuss a jorunal form BMJ (Kontiokari T. Randomised trial of cranberry-lingonberry juice and Lactobacillus GG drink for the prevention of urinary tract infections in women. BMJ 2001;322:15). You know, we are so not familiar about the lingonberry here, Taiwan. So I tried to found a good picture to show the class what is lingonberry. I had the opportunity to visit Sitka back in September of 2004. My brother Buddy Jodway from PA was there in the community hospital with a brain tumor. He past in Oct of that year. Inspite of the reason I was there, I found Sitka to be the most beautiful place I have ever been. I tell everyone Bud only had to step over Mt Edgecombe to be in Heaven, as Sitka has to be the closest place to Heaven on Earth. Your pictures brink back to mind how much I loved it there. I do a lot of herbal studies(self teaching) and like to have photos when I can find good ones. By far yours are some of the best. Could I inquire as to the type camera you have been useing? And the type of lens/filters? I just aquired a Cannon AE and will be doing alot of practicing. I wanted to comment on your photos taken in North Carolina. In one of the photos taken of some fallen trees(probably due to some of our floods as a result of the hurricane season). In the comments under the piture you wondered what kind of trees and what the protrusions at their bases were. Well, can't swear, but from my time there, I can presume to say they were a type of cypres,and the protrusions are "knees". The purpose, I learned as a child is to enable the trees to "breathe". Though , I doubt this is the real reason or purpose. If you are intested, you might check out cypres trees (a protected species through out the US), Florida seems to have the highest concentration.
