Johan Wilhelm Utter was my grandfather - my father was one of the five sons you mentioned (Kent Eric). My maiden name is Utter. I know all the descendents of Wilhelm and am looking for information on his background as well as his wife (Hilma Johnson), also from Sweden. I realize it is almost 10 years since you posted the entry, so my hopes of finding anything at this point are slim, but I am certainly interested in any information that might be available. This was a time when Sweden sent people to settle the area of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.( Called New Sweden) Anyone that had a minor infration of the law was sentanced to the gallows or were given the choice to immigrate to New Sweden. Olaf built the first grist mill and Hans was the first white man to settle on Pensauken creek in Cinnaminson, NJ The Mansson name was changed to Steelman after Hans died 1691. Their mother Ella Stille took part of the Stille name and the Mansson name to make the Steelman name The Steelmans were the first whites to settle Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and also Elkton,Md. They set up trading post to trade with the indians I am a life member of Colonial Swedish Society. I am also looking for the Johnson surname. I am back to the mid seventeen hundreds to Joseph Johnson of Greenbank, New Jersey. I really enjoy learning about my ancestors

You wrote to Howard you may be able to provide information on earlier generations. My wife and I are going to be in Karlskoga on Tuesday August 12, and would very much like to meet you and see what information the Society may have on this family.

I also have some information about the family since their arrival in the United States which I will bring if you are interested.

He worked for Deere & Company and eventually was a tool & die maker employed by auto industry suppliers in Detroit. My cousin Ingrid Jansson still lives in Karlskoga. I have visited Karlskoga twice, and look forward to my next trip. Carl Oscar met his wife Emma Johnson in Moline. She had emmigrated from Laholm, in the southern part of Sweden. Having grown-up in a large family in a small thatched-roof house on a torp, Emma must have thought she found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow when she married Carl Oscar Nyquist.

She was born in Orebro around January 21, 1873/74, boarded the SS City of Berlin at Goteborg and arrived in New York August 29, 1890 at the age of 16, alone. From there she somehow made it to Iowa and the rest?? That's as far as I've gotten in my first week of searching. Comments:Dear Kjell:
This is a a note to thank you.
My brother, Alan G. Holmes passed away in 2004, but before he died he sent me the charts and work he had put together on our family genealogy in Sweden. There were several letters from you in 1968 containing the material you had put together for him at the archives in Upsala.
You traced some of our ancestors, the Hellstrom who lived and worked at the mines and smelters in Jarnboas and the surrouding area. Your work helped him tie together their lives in the 1700 and 1800's. He also visited Sweden a number of times and and met some of the descendants still living in Sweden. While I was in Sweden in the early 1990's, I regret I never got a chance to visit that area. I have been able, however, to continue the tree he started. Thanks again.

Comments:Hi, I'm looking for any and all information anyone might be able to help me locate on one
Anna Louise Johansson
born January 6, 1848
In a small town near Stockholm, Sweden
Her mother passed away when she was a young child and was raised by her brothers and father.
On or before her twentith birthday she came to the United States with friends.
She settled in Toccoa, Georgia, working as a domestic on a plantation.
She did travel with a minister and his wife from Georgia to Northern Iowa.
There she met and married her husband Neils Larsen from Albrog, Denmark.
They had five children, three of which reached maturity. He was killed by a bullin 1927 and she passed in 1931.
There is nothing on her death certificate regarding her mothers maiden name. And I don't know her brothers names.
I would like to find out what parish she was born in etc. and find her parents, and siblings names.
I would eventually like to locate the rest of her family.
I would appreciate any help that I could get.
Thanks again,
Sharon

But I soon learned that no one in my family really knows anything about my great grandparents. My great grandfathers name was Hjalmar Ragner Carlson we dont know much about him other then he was born in 1910. If anyone knows anything about him or has any information on why people came from Sweden to America I would greatly apreciate hearing it. So that I may use some of the infomation in my paper. I would like to learn more about my ancestory so that later generations can learn as well.

I hope you are doing well. I remember so well the time you spent with our family during our 1999 vist to the the Karlskoga area, your taking us to the Bjurtjärn parish church where my mother's great grandfathers (Alsterlund) were ministers, as well as the area farms and visiting with us about our relatives that immigrated out of Bjurtjärn parish and who went to Chicago and then settled in Wisconsin. We still talk of that trip and hope to visit again in 2009.
In the society's office, there were maps on the walls of the different areas. Can you tell me where I might obtain copies of those? I had the 2 map numbers that I was hoping to obtain, but now cannot locate those numbers -- one was for my father's family and the other was for my mother's family. Also, you had a book about the Bjurtjärn
parish ministers and found my mother's great grandfathers. Is there a way to obtain a copy of that/those pages along with the reference as to the name of the book, publisher, etc.
Again, I hope you are doing well and that we might get a chance to visit in 2009.

Comments:Dear Kjell,

After several years of corresponding with you, words cannot express my thanks for all the work you and the Karlskoga Genealogy Society did for me in researching the Swedish Roots of my great grandfather Carl Nilsson and grandfather Carl Carlson who lived in Aggerud on the outskirts of Karlskoga as well as the Peterson Family from Aggerud who married into my family. It was your article "Destination Oskaloosa" that traced the Carlson and Peterson families from Karlskoga to Muchakinock in southern Iowa, in the late 1880's, where they worked in the coal mines there as well as Buxton, Hiteman and other southern Iowa mines that got me interested my family genealogy.

I also want to thank you and others of Karlskoga for the wonderful hospitality shown me and my nephew Brad on our vist to Karlskoga in September, and for you taking time to show us the farmsteads where my family lived and the Karlskoga museum. It was an emotional experience to walk in my ancestors footsteps and on Sunday morning to worship in the beautiful and historical Karlskoga Church where they were members.
I would like to hear from any others who have relatives that lived and worked in Muchakinock, Buxton, Hiteman and other coal mines in southern Iowa.

Thank you again for all your work on my family and the research you have done for the hundreds of others in helping them find there Swedish Roots.

Sincerely,
Bill and Brad Johnson
