I work as a paraprofessional in an elementary school mostly with preschool and kindergarten aged children. I am constantly making up "little ditties" to help the children learn new concepts and help them retain facts. For example I have written a song to encourage them not to give up if something seem hard, and I hear them sing it to each other when someone starts to feel frustrated. Also, the kindergarten children have learned to spell metamorphosis and remember the stages by singing one of my "little ditties." Music really works. And I thought I would let you know that there is more to this song, at least the version I learned. "When I was young I studied U.S. Geography. My Teacher said would you please stand and list the states for me. My knees began a knockin, My words fell out all wrong. Then suddenly I burst out, with this silly little song... Alabama, Alaska, ...(you know the rest) When I sat down all out of breath the teacher said "THATS GREAT! But if you want to get an A for that silly little rhyme. Stand back up and sing it again, but do it double time!" [Now we would sing it again faster] |
