| Comments: | When he played the Uptown Theater in Kansas City,I worked upstairs as a usher and at the Spotlight(you had to be 21 to be on the floor). While his band did numerous encores/he was too tired, "Muddy" and I were the only two people backstage, we talked and talked...What a great guy! He offered me and wrote down his home #,when I saw he wrote McKinley Morganfield I didn't know what to think/I did not know that was his name. I'd like to find Music/Photos(a bootleg?) of that show, it changed me ,giving me a whole new understanding of Music! RIP,Thank you! |

i can remember sitting up late in my Grandmother's kitchen and tuning in radio station WLAC out of Nashville. (One of two stations the old AM tube would pull in and hold the signal without fading in and out.)It was there that I first listened to Mr Waters and I have been a fan ever since. I turn 64 this spring and when I listen to his music it still makes me feel like it did those nights in my grandma's kitchen. Muddy will always live on. |

Muddy's music will go down in history and never be forgotten. There are many musicians, especially in Chicago, that are playing his songs as part of their typical Chicago blues set on a nightly basis. I only wish we could get local blues bands in all the major cities to play some of Muddy's songs in his memory. Bob Janicki Musician By Night |

| Comments: | I had the great privilege to meet (and to interview for french magazines) several times Mr Muddy Waters and I felt he really was like his records: proud, warm and friendly after awhile, very charismatic. He was a living legend for us although the first time I met him he wasn't yet totally aware of that. His legacy is very very impressive and stands way up above most of the artists of his generation. The standard of his recorded legacy is absolutely stunning with many masterworks. I have now regularly listened to his records for more than half a century and it sounds to my ears still thrilling and gripping like the first time I discovered this giant amongst us. |

Just wanted to let you know that the memorial award program is moving forward to allow (in Year 1) a young Irish blues guitarist to study roots blues. Funding will determine whether it will happen in Ireland, England or the US. I'm looking for a few traditional roots guitar players to join the panel. The award is in honor of Rory Gallagher, the father of Irish blues who steadfastly urged student to learn from those he called "prime movers," one of whom was clearly Muddy Waters! I'll send the link when it launches! Also, your readers might like to read this story about the reverance Rory Gallagher had for Muddy Waters: [ http://www.kieran.keegan.btinternet.co.uk/Rory/rory_gallagher_biography_3.htm ] Thank you SO much! |

| Comments: | I've always loved Muddy, but recently undertook a (now-defunct) writing project to review one "classic" album a day for a year. On the 42nd day, I covered "At Newport." And this is what I came up with, inspired by the poem, "A Visit from St. Nicholas":
'Twas the daytime in Newport, the afternoon show when a Delta-born bluesman stood rarin' to go. The folkies had flocked from far and from near in hopes he'd play blues they'd all come to hear. The buttoned-down crowd nestled snug in their seats (no visions of dancing to those big Chi-town beats) and Muddy at the mic-stand, his band at his back, broke full-throttle through with a sonic attack. They jived just like butterflies, they stung hard like bees, "I Got My Brand On You" had 'em all weak in the knees. But then "Hoochie Coochie Man" started up soon and the crowd - to a man - could not help but swoon. The sun and the heat likely both took their toll, but neither deprived the poor crowd of its soul. No, that was Muddy's, his prize fair and square. He scalped 'em with sweetness, with grit, and with flare. With his band, he was lethal, so poised and so tight, having logged all those hours in the juke joints each night. In rope-a-dope fashion, he reeled in the fish, called out their songs like he was granting a wish: "Now, 'Tiger,' Now, 'Mojo,' and now, 'Soon Forgotten.'" Their "I Feel So Good" made "O.K." look rotten. To the end of the song! To the end of the set! With "Mojo" once more (as if you could forget!) His harp, how it zig-zagged! His keyboards, how jazzy! His drums brought out big guns, so thund'rous and spazzy! His speech between songs was humble, polite, bringing black southern charm to the young northern white. The lyrics he slurred and motorboat-barked, and the axe in his hands - so electric it sparked - sent currents through him, from his brain to his belly. Ladies shook when he sang, like a roll full of jelly. With "Goodbye Newport Blues," he got up and went. Believe it or not, a half hour was spent on just nine little songs, of which none was a dud... ...and that is how Newport got baptized in Mud. |

| Comments: | Listening to Muddy last night, and got to thinking about all the great Muddy Waters Blues Band concerts I'd seen over the years... nice to look them up on this site and remember a few I'd forgotten! One I'll never forget... 1975 in Springfield MA, my hometown, at a little club someone had made out of a former supermarket (cleverly called The Supermarket). A hot summer night downtown, and a pretty small crowd... I think the place closed after just a few months. But Muddy and the band were on fire, Muddy walking off the stage, singing and shaking hands with people... and after the show, hanging outside in the parking lot to cool off with some beers and conversation with the legend himself and his amazing band! Recall chatting with Guitar Jr. for a while... I was 20 years old and already had the blues! Peace. |

My parents grew up listening to your music and then passed the grand blues down to me. When I am fortunate to have a son, he shall grow up listening to the music you left for him to enjoy.
Thanks, Trey |

| Comments: | I saw Muddy on an amazing night,11 April,1981 at the Point After Lounge in Central Florida. I found the place purely by accident as I had been in Titusville,Fla that day hoping to see the first Space Shuttle launch. A computer glitch postponed the launch to the next day and I was driving back to Orlando a little dejected (the Point After is not IN Orlando but abt half way between there and the coast on Rt 50 if its still there.) An old yellow sign holding black letters on it saying '"Tonite: MuddyWaters" caught my eye and I drove back to check it out. Only the bar owner was there cleaning up and he said he wasnt expecting a very big crowd. That night I got there almost two hours early and was pleased to see things as he said. Only a couple hundred people attented and I sat alone at a table directly in front of him on the low stage. Needless to say, the size of the crowd did not appear to matter to Muddy at all and the combination of the music and getting to watch him play and see all his talent was just incredible. I had played acoustic guitar for years but nothing like that. My friends liked bluegrass and a some pop songs and we'd played a few local gigs but it was really only a hobby. Experiencing such a legend that nite from so close was more incredible than I can express. Thinking back over the years Ive wished I had written down every song he sang that nite or that I could have had my 35mm camera there but it matters little because the music seared deep into my soul and enhanced every other type of music Ive ever heard. I had seen Little Feat, Bonnie Rait, John Lee Hooker (from so far away I couldnt see his face) and many other great concerts but that nite with Muddy I saw the sweat of the effort and the strenght in each finger and the calluses on the tip. His voice has been in my head ever since even though for many years I mostly listened to more modern rock. I think in a way I tucked the experience away for the day when I would have a chance to understand him better. Youtoob of course brings some of it back but no modern computer or digital device can replace the raw power and moving love for his music and the musicians that were with him.
Its nice to see other people here that have felt the same way. I remember late in the 2 1/2 hr show him leaning into the microphone and looking from me to everyone he could see and saying "lemme tell y'all somthin', everything gonna be alright". |

| Comments: | First saw Muddy Waters at the long-gone Hole in the Wall in Reading, England in Dec 1970. He was on crutches. There were no washrooms at the club - people used the back alley. I next saw him twice in one week in 1978 - at the Hammersmith Odeon (with EC) and at the Rainbow. |

| Comments: | I was a 17-year old kid hitchhiking across Canada in the summer of 1973. I was walking down Yonge Street when I got to Toronto, and passed a bar called the Colonial Tavern. Outside to my amazement was a poster for Muddy Waters, playing that afternoon. Even though I was underage, I walked in and sat down. There was only a few people drinking in the place, and they didn't ask me for ID. I sat down right in front of the stage, and about half an hour later the band came in and started warming up. Then all of a sudden Muddy Waters came in. He passed by my table and went onstage. I was totally in awe. He started playing his red Telecaster and I was completely blown away by the fantastic sounds he made and the enormous talent and power he had. I was like eight feet away and it was like a private concert!! Never in my life have I been so bowled over and awestruck. He was a great man and a true legend and we will never see his likes again. I'll never forget that day as long as I live and it was the greatest musical performance I have ever had the privilege to have witnessed. |

| Comments: | I saw Muddy Waters play the Civic Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma 1979 with Eric Clapton. You have the correct date but, Clapton's tour was the main bill for the show.
I was 17 at the time, and didn't know who Muddy was. He came out onto the stage, started to play and I recognized the songs as a Rolling Stones, or Led Zepplin song. It was only later that I dicovered that I had been in the presense of one of the greatest Blues Masters of all time. Muddy's performance is one of my most memorable concerts I have ever attended or will ever attend. I have seen many bluesmen at the Tulsa Venue's including, B.B.King, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Coco Taylor, and many others. Muddy Waters stands out above them all. |
