Comments:Read the article in HVW's rag this month about you, and jumped on your web site to see who, what, where you are. I had a ball reading it. I grew up in Fontana, CA when the drag strip was on Foothill by Etiwanda Rd. Got hooked on VW when a friend of my named Ron Steebles raced out in Gardena. Mears Bros used to hit that area also about that time. Now my own project is in the works in my garage, but I have learned so much past year on do's and don't of putting one together. It started off mild, now with what I have in mind. It's gonna be a crazy streeter. I'm up in Grants Pass, OR. We have a strip in Medford, hope to see you sometime in Sacto, I missed it past few races due to work, but will make it soon. Congrats Champ!

Comments:Hello Mike i have a little trouble...can you give me some advise?.... i built a 1776cc engine 50cc at combustion chamber 1mm deck ....7.4Cr
cb performance heads 42x37.5 cam a webcam 111 grind 272° total .476" lift @ 1.1
engine was a total failure....feels like deflated like a stock 1600 engine. has anybody ever tried out 1776cc with 42 x 37 valves? or those valves are way too big for a 1776 cc engine.I have a hunch about my stock cam around 256° wich should bring that engine back to life and make it a screamer engine... a hauling engine is that hunch right?
thanks for your time im all ears to your answer thanks!!!!

Comments:Question for Muffler Mike
Im impressed because here in yucatan, Mexico i ve seen a car making 12.30 Seg 1/4 mille i know from a secure source it has a 78.8 mm scat crank lightened 12.5lbs flywheel but i dont know what cam he is using and either which pistons 90.93 or 90.5 48mm idas opened to 51.5mm it also has slick tires and 3rd and 4rt gears with 8.31 and super diff and 1.5 ratio rockers it has a very smooth idle when he is heating his tires it stays turned on almost 5 minutes which for me is a sign of low cr and has no cooling its also noticeable it has set of Eliminator 2000 cylinder heads also have a video that i would like to upload so you can see and hear that engine so after all of this my question is ¿what kind of engine and parts combination could yield those 12.30 seg for a naturally aspirated engine?
what kind of cam makes smooth idle and lots of torque to reach those 12.30 sec in a 1/4 mille? is it a low cr or high cr?

Comments:Mike, thank you so much for your responce to my many questions I wrote to you. You and your website rocks. My brother (Phillip) was into the vw craze in the mid to late 70's and as a younger brother (12 yrs old) I was my brothers helper in building and racing his vw's. He had a street driven 68 vw with a angle chop top and fiberglass front end which he named the "BIONIC BUG". It had a 2180cc motor with a spg roller bearing crank with was a popular setup back in the 70's. The trans was a close ratio one. In 1976 he drove his bug to Hawaii Raceway Park which was about 20 miles from home, put on pair of slicks and a stinger and put out a 12.37et on his first pass. He made 3 more runs with a best of a 12.04et. and drove the car home. Not bad for a street machine in the 70's. Im 42 yrs old now and the technology that you incorporate now with your car is so very unreal and unthought of from of the 70's. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me and the vw community. Aloha, Gene ps. Phillip died back in 1981 in an automobile accident by a drunken driver.

Love your web-site!!! I find it very interesting and informative. I'm in the process of building a drag sedan and having some fun. I own a machine shop in the cold northeast specializing in head work on everything from vintage motorcycles to Porsches. I have always had a love for air cooled vw's but unfortunatly they are a dying breed in this part of the country. Hopefuly I can 'spark' some interest. It looks like I can get ideas from your site.
Keep up the good work and good luck.

Comments:Hi Mike,

Your website is always a good read. It not often people update their websites as regularly as you do.

Just curious, but are you allowed to run EFI in the class of racing you compete with? If you aren't, you still may be able to use a computer controlled ignition and boost system.

I just recently put a Wolf 3D computer on my bug, but for a day while fooling around with turbo blow thru carbs, I ran the wolf to control ignition only. In that mode you could fully control ignition at any RPM/MAP point and also control boost and even compensate for induction air temp while still using a draw thru carb. The wolf can fire and MSD as well.

Just a suggestion...

Cheers,

Ian.

Comments:Hi Mike- I used to be an enthusiast of v-dubs and now want to get back into it. I'd like to put an 1835 in the back of my stripped-down silver-oxided '89 Jeep Cherokee. No, I don't want to install this into the car. I just want to be able to say that "I have an 1835 in this p.o.s." when someone asks! Sincerely, Major Woody, ret. CCAFS

I just put a 1915cc engine in there it should run high thirteens in the quater. My concern is wheel hop. What do i do to to prevent this?
Prescott Philups of underdog racing built the engine.alot of torque!!

I never got a complete spec sheet on the engine.
I know it has big beef manifolds,044 heads 44 x 37 valves with all the bells and whistles 44mm webbers,1' 5/8 merged header with stinger, pauter rods
c65 or 95 cam not shure.it likes 3000 rpm nothing below.

thanks for your time

Comments:This my second time viewing your web site, Its the best thing on TV. Ive been a customer of Dick and Bill for the past 25years, and they gave me your web site to view. Im not a serious racer, but enjoy a 57 oval calif sedan, 69x94 that has run in the low 13 seconds with a 104 4th gear. Ive set it up with extra cooling, and extras to survive street driving.

Dick told me I could ask you some questions about building a 300 hp street turbo motor that would be somewhat drivable on weekends and fun times. I do my own engine building and setup. There is a young guy in Orange County that has a street car that uses a four barrel carb, that runs in the low elevens, is that setup condusive to a semi smooth running street turbo setup? I have a limited budget to invest in the motor and want to possibly get the combination on paper before I start building. My long block is going to be: gene berg 78 stroke crank, cima 94 stroker piston set, ported 37.5x40mm cyc. heads, H beam rods, 1.5 bushed rocker arms and lash caps.

From your experience with turbos and knowledge of whats out there, what possible choices are available to me. Remember I want 300+ hp not 200, or 250, for I have 160 with my 48IDA's now. Thanks

I would greatly appreciate you input on my future project.

Comments:Just a short story:
GYNECOLOGIST BECOMES A MECHANIC

A gynecologist, tired of his profession and wanting less responsibility, decided a career change was in order. After some serious thought he decided that being an auto mechanic, something he had enjoyed up to the time he entered college, would be a good profession.

However, it had been a long time since he had tinkered with an engine and he knew that to work on any of the newest engines and be able to compete with the younger work force, he would have to go to school. So he enrolled in a technical institute that specialized in teaching auto mechanics and pretty much aced the course.

The final exam however, required each student to completely strip and reassemble a complete engine. So it was with some trepidation he took on the task.

At completion, he turned the engine over to his instructors for evaluation and awaited his final grade. When the grades were handed out he did a double take at the 150% grade he received.

Rather confused, he asked his instructor, "How is possible to have a grade like this?"

The instructor replied. "It's really quite simple. You got 50% for correctly disassembling the engine, 50% for correctly reassembling the engine and an additional 50% for doing it all through the muffler."

Comments:Hey Mike great job at firebird, I love watching your car go down the track. Ive always seen pics of you doing wheel stands in the magazines but when I saw you do one at vw drag day it was a site to behold. Well I just wanted to inform you about me and my friends, we have been putting together some fast cars and trying to find a good place to run and what we have found is the street legals at Irwindale. When i first went a few weeks ago there was not one single VW there(at the time we didn't have our cars done yet) and this really disappointed us. I'll just get to the point, I know you are a big name in the VW scene and you have lots of influence. Do you think you could spread the word about the street legals to all your friends and get them to come out and spank some rice burners. We hate being the only ones. We usually go on sunday nights from 4:00p.m. to 10:00p.m. I think it would be a blast seeing lots of fast VWs out there. Any help would be great.

Comments:Mike, you did a sweet job racing at firebird raceway on saturday. We drove from southern california as well. My friend and I were rooting for you every race and we have all your runs on our camera which I have watched about 6 times already. I was checking out all of the bugs and I saw you ride by on a bike, but I did not want to bother you, you had a race to win! So nice job out there, My bud and I love to watch you race!! later , Mike

That wheelie was the highlight of the day. Do you by chance know if they are gonna bring out a video of this event?

Please let me know?
