| Comments: | I love to read about everyone's journey to WLS. It keeps my mind on the right track. I'm considering having the surgery done. I'm 36 years old and my current weight is 267 pounds and I'm 5' 5". It really hurts my feeling when my kids are embrassed to be seen in public with me especially at a county fair where I can't even fit into the rides! I have already went to the pre-required seminar and now I'm just waiting to see about the insurance if it's going to be approved or not. I feel like I'm heading in the right direction. i have a question for you...should I take time to do some exercising prior to the surgery, I read that your story about being disqualified if you went to far under. How much weight would I lose if I were just to walk daily? I think I would like to do whatever I can to have a less than painful recovery. Thanks for listening. |

Hi, I am going to have the surgery, no date yet. I have met with the nutritionist, the shrink. My next appointment is with the colon doctor to have the endoscopy, and colon check, and then with my regular physician for a general check up. How long after that do they schedule you for surgery?
I am 56, 5'4", and 255 lbs. In your opinion, what weight loss do you think I will accomplish? I am very discipilined Believe it or not, I am not nervous, only happy to be able to be myself again. Basically, after my second child was born, (I was 35) 1 month later I had my gallbladder out, and then I started menopause. The weight crept up and before I knew it I was over 200. I have high blood pressure and am always tired. I also because of my weight, have hips problems in my right hip, (due to being overweight). Hopefully this will all disappear... I had two C=sections, so I know what abdominal surgery is like, in fact a C=section, is probably more pain. So I know that I will be able to tolerate it, especially the walking, it takes time, and you feel that it is the first time you ever walked ..... Your site is fantastic, and very nicely developed.... and very informative. Please write back. Thank you, Barbara |

Then, it is time for the consult and crossing my fingers for the approval. I commend you for this website, because I have sort of journaled my own feelings/experiences, etc..... but I dont have the time or the patience to keep up like I had initially intended. So, thanks. Your website is very inspiring. Your story is one with which I can relate, being overweight myself and facing a myriad of health related issues as a result.
I decided that my own attempts to lose excess weight are just not working. I am 6'2" and weigh over 350 pounds. I need help controlling my appetite and this procedure is my last resort. All other attempts at self-motivation have failed. I cried when I saw your final pictures. I want to be that thin again, but like the junkie who can't put down the needle, food is my drug. As much as I enjoy eating, and eating large portions, I cannot continue on this path any longer without having my addiction control my life even more than it already does. Thank you for your honesty in sharing your story, in all the graphic detail. It provides a much needed insight into this procedure, and has reinforced my decision to enter into the program at NW Hospital with Dr. Thayer's group. |

On the 12th of October 2004 I am going into hospital myself for Bariatric Surgery (a stomach bypass) - and reading your site is an inspiration at a time when I am starting to wonder if I am actually doing the right thing! I now know I am! I guess my biggest fear is that I am by myself, I have no immediate family support (they all live overseas!) and I have a room-mate who's not interested in it a bit ... so I guess that recovery from the op during those few days/weeks is what made me think twice ... but there are people out there who I am sure will support me, and reading sites like this make it all that more inspirational! | Comments: | Your website it truly inspiring. I was overweight growing up, and peaked at 185 pounds when I was only 14 years old. I, however, was lucky to begin losing weight at that time and am now down to 140 at 21 years old, living healthily and happily. Although my case is not as extreme as yours and some of the other people who have commented on this site, I feel as though I have taken valuable life experience from being overweight as a child and teenager. Losing weight quickly, as I did going from 185 to 150 in only a few months really makes you realize how differently people treat you as a thinner person. I'm sure you had quite the same experience. I came across this website looking through "The Swan" website and it's people like you who validate the process of cosmetic and weight loss surgery. You are amazing! |

I'm 51 this Sunday (3/14) and I'm going for my first consultation at Duke University to have the surgery myself. I only wish I'd have done it when I was young like you are. I have a great family support system which helps. But reading journals like yours, which are not too lengthy but long enough to give great information has been a big help in many ways.
