Comments:New England hotrodding, Racing, and custom car building has never been documented as extensively as the west coast scene and the first generation of these rodders, builders, and racers are disappearing every day. We need to document this history, Before it's LOST FOREVER! I run the largest weekly cruise night/ car shows in the No. East since 1989 www.CRUISINTHETREE. com We are all volunteers, the show is a fund raiser for D.A.R.E. We are trying to establish a website that would allow people to SHARE photos, stories, and be the place you could come to to find connections to sites like this. Check us out call me John D'Amico (978) -777-5532 Let's get this going! P.S. last year it was our privilege to honour KELSEY MARTIN at our show.

Comments: Really miss the old Sanford drags! I was 16 and had a 58 Chevy 348 tri-power and a 3 gear trans. Also ran an old nitro Harley. Yeah if you broke 100mph in the 1/4 back then, you were the man!! I ran 2 years there and got drafted as did so many others for the Viet Nam war. Oh what great times!! Sometimes I ride over there and remonice!! The Rod Father

Comments:I have many great memories from Sanford. I ran a 63 Ford A/S sponsered by Muzi Ford in 64 & 65. Next car was a 32 Ford roadster C/A that ran at Sanford and then N. E. Dragway. I stayed away from the drags for 35 years but the bug bit again and I can't get enough. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers the caars or may have pictures.

I have a lot of pics from New England that some friends in Mass. wanted me to ID for them. The album they sent me was put together in 1956-57 and features a lot of 'flathead' powered machinery. Ever heqar of the Piston Manglers? I have a pic of their club's drag racer.

Comments:Hi:
Boy oh Boy! Have these photos stirred up memories. I live in Machias, ME and attended the drags at Sanford. We would leave Machias in the evening and drive to Sanford at night, watch the races and drive back home again the same day. That was probably 450-500 miles round trip.
We first went there in 1961 and attended tru 1965. What a wonderful experience that was!
Seeing these photos and the names associated with them was a thrill. The Chevy coupe in the photo may have ended up in Jonesboro, Me. (If it's red) My friend Curt bought it and converted it to street use. It was a nice street machine. I remember seeing Arfons Jet, George Montgomery,"Sneaky" Pete Robinson, the Sidebothams from Mass and many others. I still have a few clippings from back then.
I myself started racing at Winterport Dragway in the summer of '68 with my '68 road runner. There was a few Canadian racers that used to come. A couple I remember was a '68 Dart. I think the driver's last name was Monteith; and a GMC pick-up with a 396.
Thanks for the memories.

Comments:Hey Lloyd,
Great photos and memories from Sanford. Spent many Sundays there, dreaming and absorbing all the sights, sounds, and smells! Nitro & rubber - what an elixer!
Am in the process of re-creating a car that ran at Sanford - the first hot rod I ever laid eyes on as a kid in Augusta. A green Model A coupe, chopped and channeled (hard), with flathead power. Belonged to Ron Donaghey from Farmingdale. If there are any photos of the car out there anywhere, I'd love to see them. i have a few, which are posted on Smitty's hot rod site.
As to Bob Ellison, I was saddened to hear of his passing. I sold him the '50 Merc that he re-did and was so proud of.

Comments:Great stuff. Brought back some good memories. Currently I own (since 1975) Jerry Harvey's (Paul Harvey Ford)1967 427 Fairlane "The Quiet One". Jerry set the SS/B record at Amarillo and beat Ronnie Sox at the U.S. Nationals in 1967. Bill Rider was the crew chief on the car. The car was sold to Valley Ford a dealer in St. Louis in 1968. I know it ran at the 1968 AHRA Springnationals in Bristol, Tn. Drag Racer Mag. did a three part article on 100 years of Ford racing. The article stated that Ford commissioned the building of 50 427 Fairlanes for SS competition. They went to such drivers as Jerry Harvey, Hubert Platt, and Nate Cohen. If anyone has any pics or history of the car please contact me.

Great Site, I'm wondering if you or anyone

a 67 Fairlane with a 427. His name is Joe

Comments:Just came along your sight on the internet.

Back in the early 60's I belonged to a club called the "Drag Masters" out of Amesbury, MA. We were members of the NEHRC and made it to all of the drags for a few years. Up at 5AM and off to Sanford to help set up and stage the events. Home by 10PM. But wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Those were great days and the friends that I have met through our club will always be remembered.

Dave Antell, Sandy Hatch, Al Sears, Dick Murray, Billy Darbyshire, Buddy McKenzie, Bill Brown and myself - Ray Hines - as well as the late Bob Stillings and Ernie Chartie.

I now live in Michigan where we have the Woodward Dream cruise - a week long exhibition of the classics that run Woodward for a week. Thousands of cars and 10's of thousands of spectators.

Lots of memories - especially manning the quarter mile when we had to chase a car that was on fire or its engine had blown.
