Comments:War dead honoured at Glencree

THE 50th anniversary of the dedication of the only German military cemetery in Ireland was held at Glencree last Sunday, with a solemn ecumenical Remembrance Day service in the Wicklow Mountains.

Representatives of the German Embassy and members of Irish Veterans Organisations attended the poignant service. However, it was the laying of a wreath by German Ambassador Dr. Eckhard Lubkemeir and the Military attaché to the German Embassy in London that held a special significance for all present to mark the memories of fallen soldiers. One of the guests was Fr. Fritz O'kelly from the Friary, Wexford, who is author of the new book 'Love from Zambia' which is being launched on Thursday. He was an interpreter for 168 German seamen brought from the Bay of Biscay to Cobh in 1943 on the Wexford ship MV Kerlogue. Two of Fr. Fritz's friends are buried at Glencree. Representatives of the Irish Naval Association and the Royal British Legion in Ireland also laid wreaths. Members of the German Lutheran Church in Ireland, the Irish UN Veterans Association also attended. Lutheran Pastor Corinna Diestelkamp celebrated an ecumenical service at St. Kevin's with the Very Reverend John Sinnott. The Goethe Institute Choir accompanied the service. There are 134 people buried at the German military cemetery in Glencree - six soldiers from World War I, 81 soldiers from World War II, 46 civilians and one spy. The soldiers from World War I buried there were prisoners in a POW camp in Ireland, then part of the United Kingdom. The WWII servicemen buried at Glencree were mainly Luftwaffe airmen who had crashed here or navy personnel washed up on Irish soil. The 46 civilians were on board the British SS Arandora Star, being transferred to Canada from England when it was sunk by a German U-boat. The spy is Hermann Goetz who parachuted into Ireland in 1940 and for a time lived at Laragh Castle.

RNA Biennial Parade 2011

1SL Remarks RNA Biennial Parade (40KB) Sunday saw the RN exercise its right to parade and lay wreaths at the Cenotaph in London. Over 360 Shipmates paraded with 62 Area and Branch standards and the National Standards of the RNA, RMA, WRNS Association and the Irish Naval Association. The Reviewing Officer was the First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope GCB OBE. The National President of the RNA Vice Admiral John McAnally CB LVO laid a wreath as did Mr Les Dwyer the President of the Naval Association of Australia and Mr.Gerry Kennedy President of the Irish Naval Association. The RNA was joined by their comrades of the RBL Llanelli band. The First Sea Lord addressed the parade on completion and his stirring words are attached. Our National President called for 3 cheers for the Naval Service and had two re-scrubs until it could be heard in No 10 and 11 Downing Street, 500 metres away. Shipmates enjoyed a light finger buffet and a libation in the Civil Service afterwards and had the chance to meet with the First Sea Lord. The Irish Association contingent lead the singing but the drinking competition was declared a draw!

Comments:Dear Terry,

It was a great pleasure and privilege to parade with the INA at the Cenotaph this year. As a man entitle to a ROI passport and most of my extended family in the Dublin area, it was wonderful to hear the brogue and the sense of fun. As I said to my staff this morning the sing-song reminded me of every wake I have been to at home, that sense of friendship, fun and joy.

I have to say that as I was standing next to your standard bearer waiting for the parade to march past looking down at the band, the standards and 300+ shipmates, the old heart skipped a beat. As a way of keeping in touch I would like to put you on the list of our monthly newsletter, You will then be briefed up as our own branches. We love your piece on the website.

I tried to chat to as many as I could and expressed to all of them how much I enjoyed meeting with them and having a really fun time. You were all most welcome and I know from many comments I received from our own members on parade that your presence was very much appreciated. I hope that we can welcome you again in the future and perhaps we could come over and join you on one of your occasions, maybe establishing alternate year visits to maintain and enhance our fellowship of seafarers.

Please pass on my best wishes to all in your Association and I sincerely hope to have the chance to meet up with many of your members in the future - even if it means making a private visit of my own.

My best regards,

Comments: It is indeed with deep regret that I have learned of the death of ex-CPO Jimmy Quinn. Having served in Signals from 1957-62 I knew him very well and he was a very easy man to like. He possesed that rare quality of being a natural leader of men. He was able to get things done quietly and without ever seeming to raise his voice, --and always a good humoured "twinkle" in his eye.
His skills as a Visual Signaller were outstanding--there was no VHF radio in the service until 1962 so everything in and around Cork Harbour was done with Visual Signals. One outstanding memory I have of Jimmy was his ability to communicate with Slua Muire summer visits to Fort Camden using just a small old telescope to read semaphore/lamp signals from Camden. He was always the man to call to handle a difficult situation with calm authority and skill.

Rest in Peace Jimmy.

Captain’s Journal Sat 15th May 2010
Position 022° 58S 041° 39W. Wind . Temperature 22°C (0800P). Cloudy Sky. Seawater temperature 24°C.

Today we arrive into Rio de Janeiro, the ‘January River’ also known as the “Marvelous City”. Rio has a population of over 11million people and is a major tourist destination.

The night before arrival into port on a deployment such as this is always a nervous one for the Commanding Officer. I would compare it to how a manager of a football or hurling team feels the night before a big final. The plans that have been made and all the preparations go round in your head. Is everything ready? Have we forgotten anything? Does the programme reflect everything that must be done over the next four days? These were just some of the questions continuously going around inside my head last night. These questions were easily answered, I know we are ready!

One of the other things that occupy a Captain’s mind before arriving into port is the port itself. What will the berth be like? Is it a difficult berth to manoeuvre into? Approximately one hour before going alongside we will be picking up a port pilot. The pilot will have a wealth of local knowledge and can advise me about local currents, tides and traffic in the harbour but ultimately I am responsible for the safe arrival of LE NIAMH into the port of Rio de Janeiro. I have the utmost confidence in the crew. I know that they will assist me in making the arrival of LE NIAMH into Rio a safe and smooth evolution.

PRESS RELEASE

Irish Naval Association make their official visit to
Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition at Citywest Event Centre, Dublin

On Saturday, March 20th at 2pm, 22 members of The Irish Naval Association in full uniform made their official visit to Titanic: the Artefact Exhibition at Citywest Event Centre, Dublin. The Irish Naval Association, founded in 1962, is restricted to serving Officers, NCOs and Ratings of the Naval Service and the Naval Service Reserve and to ex-members of the Naval Service, the Marine Service and the Maritime Inscription
Almost 98 years after it sank on a calm April night in 1912, the spirit of Titanic returns to Ireland. Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition, which has been seen by more than 22 million people worldwide, is now open in the Citywest Event Centre, Citywest Dublin. This specially designed exhibition focuses on the legendary RMS Titanic’s compelling human stories as best told through extensive room re-creation and more than 300 authentic artefacts recovered from Titanic’s wreck site. A top hat, a gentleman’s spectacles, the Titanic Bell, the steering wheel stand, the officers window, china from all three classes, a telegraph base, the perfume of Saafeld and a piece of Titanic’s hull …these and many other objects offer haunting, emotional connections to lives abruptly ended or forever altered. In addition, there will be 19 artefacts which have never been seen anywhere in the world before.

‘Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition’ takes place at Citywest Event Centre until 30th June 2010 and is open from 10am to 8pm Monday to Sunday. Tickets are available at www.titanicdublin.com, ticketmaster ticket line 0818 719300, Box Office 01 4010505 or tickets are also available at the door. Tickets are priced at €18.00 for Adults, €14.00 for Students and seniors aged 65 and over, and €12.00 for children. Children under four years of age go free and group and family rates are available. Audio tours are highly recommended at €4 for both adults and children. ENDS

for organising an excellent visit to the Titanic Exhibition at the City West Hotel. It kicked off with checking in to the Superior rooms at the hotel prior to a guided tour by the very knowledgeable Dean who was very informative. The exhibition should not be missed.

Following an excellent 4 course Steak dinner the Hotel provided a reserved area so the 36 of our group could sit in comfort and enjoy the evening entertainment and drinks until the early morning.

Thanks again John and Sinead

I served with you in the late eighties in No 2 Coy. I sailed on the Creidne with you as skipper several times. I bumped into Con Lyons at the weekend and he told me about the website. Looks like you guys have some fun. If I ever move back to Ireland I'll be sure to join.

Comments:Dear Sirs,
On your page 'Anglo Irish Treaty' I saw a few photographs of the motorvessel "David F", built 1962 at Zwolle, The Netherlands.
I am doing research on this shipyard at Zwolle (1921-1971).
I am interested in a short history of this vessel.
In the period 1960-1962 at this yard 3 vessels were built for the Marine Transport Services Cobh (Ierland), mv "Ingot", "David F" and "Marianne F".
