I was just in the mood to do a google search for some old Yavneh friends, and I came across this. Congratulations on your skating career, law degree. How's your family? I'd hear about you every now and then from my husbands (Vlad Shapiro) sister who was doing some figure skating for awhile. How are your parent, Jamie and Lauren? What is everyone up to these days? Vlad and I are still in Columbus. Vlad is in a periodontal residency and I'm busy working. It would be great to hear from you and catch up.

We just saw you perform at Knotts "It's Christmas Snoopy" and you guys were INCREDIBLE. You two are absolutely beautiful to watch on the ice. My heart does skip a beat Robert when you swing Kimberley's head so close to the floor at such incredible speed (yikes). Awesome. We were also thrilled to finally see a new show at Knotts with such a professional touch. We were there on opening night (afternoon) and came back the next evening to see the show again. Our 11 month old Baby boy loved you too! He watched the entire time, rocking back and forth to the music.

Thanks again for such a wonderful Christmas 2004 experience.
We will not forget this show. We hope to see you at least one more time this year, if we can.

Google… You gotta love it. I like to Google blasts-from-the-past and today was “Yavneh Day”. Am I cool? Don’t answer that. Anyway, of course I checked out Robby Schmalo, and he turned out to be the jackpot. National Exposure, articles everywhere, pics, even videos. And my favorite part… the guest book. This is the true treasure of today’s Google hunt.

Talk about blasts from the past. Lets start from the top here:

Rachel Ftaiha… Do I remember her? Not really. Do I remember her name? Totally. Do I remember her fast-running, funny-talking, French, older-brother-named-Abe or something, big white house having brother Ian? You bet I do. I had tried to Google him on a past “Yavneh: Moved Away” day, but I couldn’t spell Ftaiha (come on, that’s darn tough). Ian, if you’re reading this, sup. Looks like you went to Lehigh and kept up the running. I always knew you could run. That’s about all I knew.

Albert and Marlene… Of course, the proud parents. Congrats on the skating, the law degree, and a great Website. Is “Just Us Kids” still going on? It should be. Possibly one of the top 5 most fun experiences from my childhood.

Lauren… Are you Robby’s little sister? If so, you were always cute. If not, you still might be cute. If so, where are your skating links? I gathered from one of the articles that you skate too. The info will come in handy on a google “Yavneh: Siblings” day.

Karli… Sherwinter? Wow. This has to be Karli Kreidler. Yes, it is. I can tell by the email address in the post, kkreindler@yahoo.com. You get good at reading between the lines when you are a Google junkie. Karli, when you get married and change your last name, you have to get a new driver’s license, library card, and email address. Congrats on the wedding. Any kids? I’m already planning for, you guessed it, “Yavneh: The Next Generation”.

There are more… Keren Israeli (I do get the “former wife” reference), Karen Pordy (one of the top 5 cutest girls from my childhood), and Jamie (the big brother), but I won’t go into it now. My girlfriend, who is sitting right here, thought this was funny at first. Now she is worried that everyone will think (or rather find out) that I am crazy. So I will stop.

Anyway, Great site Rob, great skating career, and good luck in the field of law. If I am ever sued for a reckless skating accident I will know who to call. I’m off now, time to do my due diligence on Joshua Seidner, Josh Kent (he could be a good one!), and Andrea Casper.

P.S. Is there a romantic aside regarding Robby and Kimberly? If there is, it can’t be found on Google.

P.P.S. All you other blasts from the past, feel free to email me at Brandon@jimmysurf.com. As you can tell, I need friends.

Rob and Kim-
I watched your old skating videos and all I have to say is Wow! As a former skater I know how hard you train and how much love, devotion, time, money and all the sacrifices you have to make to be good at your craft. I watched your nationals tape and saw your Quickstep and there was not a damn thing wrong with it. The judges however were blind and stupid. I know some people compare you to Ben and Tanith because of the coloring but skating ability there are no similarites. I watched Ben and Tanith on the Today show skate to West Side Story, a musical I am in love with, they totally ruined a classic. I am not saying they are bad skaters but they don't have what you have, LOVE! When I watch you two skate I see pasion, artistry, and I just get chills. It angers me that throughout your short skating career together the judges don't see the true talent. Some do and those judges should be commended for their effort. The politics and bullsh*t need to stop. From the bottom of my heart, I love you both not just because I am your sister Rob but because, I am a performer, former skater, and a fair person. I give everyone a chance and I feel some of the judges of the United States Figure Skating Association don't know a thing about ice skating. I don't care if they went to Worlds, the Olympics, etc. they should judge on talent because I was always told you can only be as good as you can on that day at that particular time and you were the best last year. I feel I need to voice myself because I have been holding in so much pain for the two of you. Rob and Kim there will never be a team like Navarro and Shmalo. I Love you guys!

But we want you to know you have a very special place in our hearts and you have made a huge difference in the life of one little skater in particular when you opened your hearts to see beyond the things she couldn't do and just dance with her. Haley lives everyday trying to do things as well as you would Kim. The first words she wrote were "Haley Love Kim". The real judges aren't sitting on a panel--they are everywhere you go in the world everyday. And you two are shining! Never stop doing what you love. And never forget why you are doing it. Just want you to know that I've read every single word of this website and even tried my hand at the puzzle! The site is excellent, very well-designed and I'm glad you told me about it, Kim. Your statement on Jan. 24 was very honest and thought-provoking. My opinion is that there is a gap in ice-dancing waiting to be filled. I hope you and Rob will keep that in mind despite the judges. I don't think the new scoring rules have helped. In fact they may even be hindering the process because there is no way to know which judge scored what making them less accountable. If I'm wrong about this it's because I really don't understand the scoring so I'll apologize in advance!

I think the fact that the two of you are serious about college and are doing so well in your studies is VERY important. Whatever decisions you make will be well-thought out, I'm sure. I wish you both the very best of luck!

The only way to over come these emotions is just to have fun and enjoy the thrill of performing. Well, I just wanted to say Hi and wish you guys the best of luck.

Hi there!

I was so disheartened to read your message just a few minutes ago. I am sad that you feel so down about your placements at Nationals, and agree that you should have been place higher. I arrived in Dallas directly after the OD, so I can't really comment on your placements in the previous rounds of competition. What I do know, is that you have (had) a strong OD and FD for this season. Your FD was scored correctly, I have a hard time understanding your placements in the CDs...

I hope that you continue to skate, and I sincerely hope that you begin to get your competitive due. Look to your former team mates for inspiration. Good things come to those who wait. I can't wait to see your even-better FD at Nationals next year (and hopefully somewhere on the GP circuit). And work those CDs! Don't let them make any excuses!

Robert and Kim, I enjoy watching you in morning practices sometimes when I come off the west rink at Skyrink, and yes, I can't seem to understand your placements. I also saw both of you today at Lasker in Central Park. The joy both of you have translates instantly, which is why I know your statement is very important. Judging is politics, and politics can really kill skaters, and it may sound trite, but please don't give up. Find the things you love about this sport and stick with it. That's really the only truth you're going to find with these judges. Do it for yourself and the audience. We love you and some of us are skaters, too, we understand. God bless and keep warm on this cold Saturday night....:-)

Not only am I proud to be your sister Rob, but I am also proud of my you Kim. When I watch you guys skate it really touches me within. Being a musical theatre major and former skater, I can appreciate all the love and dedication you bring to your work. Never have I seen two people work as hard as you. I am so sick of these narrow-minded people who just don't understand. I am so proud of you guys. Like Maldova would say "Those Judges ain't got 6 cents!" Some do-the really good ones and the others are just as Michael Gerson would say "Old Washed Up Has Beens!" and "Boobs!" Continue to work hard and whatever you chose to do and most improtantly know that a 5'3 student at Webster University Loves You and wants you to know you are the Shiznit!

Dear Kim and Robert
As the mother of 2 skaters I think I can understand your overwhelming frustration with the judging of your event. It is one of the reasons so many teams give up. I hope you choose to find a way to continue and eventually(soon) take the podium. When my son Luke was at Nationals in L.A. last year he said your freedance was undermarked and deserved at least 3rd place. He said all the skaters he was with felt the same, but the judges kept you low enough in the first phase of the competition to maintain their agenda. This year the same thing happened again! Please dont give up. You have inspired Luke and his sister,Raya to pursue icedancing even though the coaches felt it would take away from the freeskating time, etc. And you have inspired them to believe that attending college while striving to achieve in skating is possible. Thank you for your wonderful example of depth of character, as well as your unique skating programs. Best wishes from another Queen City family!

Dear Kim and Rob:

Let me start out by saying, I am extremely proud of both of you. Also, congratulations on skating great at nationals in Dallas. The judges may have not seen it that way because they are either blind or have a different agenda than to be fair and impartial judges.

Unfortunately for your sport, unlike boxing, tennis, football, baseball etc., there is no clear winner. That's where the fair and impartial judging comes in. Unfortunately, the figure skating world seems to have a problem finding fair judges. Obviously, your scores have not been the only rip-off recently. However, public opinion is a wonderful thing and should overcome the terrible judging. If not, people will stop watching the bad competitions. Then you can skate only because you love to skate and perform.

After reading your guest book it is obvious to me that you have a lot of public support, impartial people convinced that the problem is not your skating. The problem is lack of fair and impartial judging.

Your statement dated January 24 was awesome!

I’ve been to quite a few skating competitions in the United States, Europe and Asia and met quite a few skaters/competitors. Most all of them are very nice young men and women. However, you and Rob are the only competitors I’ve known/met that are pursuing a higher education at a university and creating a future for yourselves. That's outstanding.

Regarding your love of skating and this past competition, I wouldn't let a handful of morons stop me from doing what I love to do and I don't think they'll stop you. Go kick some butt!

Don't let the judges ruin your skating career. Your skating is very good. If skating is your love, then stick with it! Judges will be Judges, politics will be politics, but you two have the "it" factor. Kim, Rob: I really hope that the rumors I hear are not true. This must be an agonizing time for you. Don't let the judges have the final victory. I can say that you got royally shafted at Nationals. I saw you skate and you were beautiful, amazing. Your placement was not about your skating or presence, it was THE JUDGES. I've experienced this with my child, who competed in Dallas.

Something has to be done about these so-called judges. Over the last several years I've heard so many of them just suck up to specific coaches and place teams higher for no reason. This type of judging - these judges - will destroy the sport. But who do you complain to without getting a black eye from the USFSA? Perhaps this could be turned into something positive. Always look for the positive in any situation- and don't let these ba*tards beat you. A strong message has to delivered to the USFSA - somehow. Perhaps if enough people say something change can be affected.

You're wonderful, talented, and a gift to the sport!

I hope the judges haven't killed their dream of going to the 2006 Olympics. I hope they don't let these *******s kill that flame.

Rob and Kim....my thoughts have been with you all week. Trust me when I say I know what is going on in your mind, though I have no idea what was going on in the minds of the judges. Rob someone I know (guess who...short, blond, former skater) would love to talk to you. Email me if you want her phone number...I don't want to give it out on a website

Kimberly,

I met your mother years ago when the Redwood Empire Arena first opened and have, since, stayed in touch from time to time. She told me in an e-mail last week of your competition in Texas this week. I wish you the best! "Break a leg" or "rust your blades" or whatever you ice dancers say. We'll be watching!

Your new fans,
Mark & Family.

I wanted to wish you guys the best of luck at Nationals. You know you are going to skate amazingly. I wish I could be with you physically in Dallas but I have classes. I will be thinking of you guys and I will be cheering for you at Webster. Have fun and just go for it! No matter where the judges place you, you guys are always #1 in my eyes!

Larry Hammons and I wish you well. We did enjoy your beautiful routine from Kyoto, Japan. I've never seen such grace and charm in my life. Such a pleasure to have known Rob since he was just a "tot". We look forward to your future on ice and in the world of today.
We shall keep checking your web-page to see what the latest news is and where it is coming from. Love and best wishes,

Donald and Larry

Hey Rob and Kim! Ya'll looked so amazing on Lifetime! I wish they had shown more of you two but maybe you are Too Hot for T.v! I am so proud of all the work you guys do. Keep loving what you are doing and never stop dreaming or believing in yourself. If I could tell you one thing I learned from college, even though I have been there a semester, it is that you should always follow your dreams. Never give up and just know that everyone around you loves you and supports you! I am not only proud to be your sister Rob, but I am proud to know such an amazing dance team like Navarro and Shmalo! I hope others can learn from you guys and the stories you tell on the ice. I love you guys and I am so proud of all you do!
