| Comments: | I am from a line of Charltons that settled in the Philadelphia area after moving from Boston. Frederick Riddle Charlton, London, came to the US in the late 1820s to marry Mary Frazier Pascal, the great granddaughter of John Hart of New Jersey who signed the Declaration of Independence. Their son, George Washington Charlton, and his brother Charles Howard (age 16) distinquished themselves at Gettysburg in 1863 by being in the 72nd PA volunteers who repeled Pickett's charge at the Angle. I only kno wthat Frederick's father and mother where named John and Penelope of London. I recently found a bit information about the Charlton tyne of Northumberland, Eng. They were one of the biggest clans of border reivers(raiders) along the Scottish border for hundreds of years and when the island unified and an end was put to the raiding (which had been encouraged by the Crown)they started to drift south towards London looking for work. What do you know of your Charlton ancestors??? |
