Comments:My first book was given to me by a family friend and it was called Gay from China at the Chalet School. I must have been about 10 years old and I became totally hooked. I wanted to go to the school, loved the characters and steadily built up the complete set, which I have read several times over. What a snapshot of the early to mid part of the 20th centuary. Roll on September when I can join your club. If anyone fancies chatting about the books/characters feel free to contact me, I would love a chance to discuss 'my secret fix'.

Comments:Hi everyone.
In Australia there is a quiz show called the Einstein Factor, in which contestants answer questions on their special topic, plus general knowledge questions (http://www.abc.net.au/einsteinfactor/) - well I applied to go on as a contestant with my special subject "The Chalet School Books: the Tyrol years (nos 1-13). Reason for not doing all 58 was it was too big a topic!!!! I taped my episode on 17 May (to be aired in October) with amazing results - for my special subject, and to introduce the CS books to the Australian TV audience, I scored the maximum points of 1700!! I also won the round, so have the opportunity to do more good news spreading in a months time. Will keep the world posted.

Comments:Have been reading the Chalet School since my mother gave me her 1930s and 1940s copies of some of the titles (which I've kept!!). Have managed to find many in paperback over the years and even borrow some through libraries (being a librarian in early working life helped!) Still find the books a welcome escape from modern life!

Comments:I have loved these books since I was 8 yrs old, now nearly 50 and still reading them - I have got most of them. My daughter age 8 is more into ponies at present! Love all of Elinor's books and also Lorna Hill of whom I am a keen devotee.
I have read a lot of Elinor's other books but feel some lack the pace of the Chalet School series which just flows on and on.

Comments:I began reading these books when I was a rather young-for-my-age convent school girl in London, and swopped books with other members of my form at school.
An Armada copy caught my eye in a book shop, and before I knew it I was hooked again. They are a wonderful description of middle-class life both before, during and after the Second World War, and although some of the characters are completely sickening most are quite believeable. I am astonished that so many babies can be born with nobody being aware of the pregnancy, and even more astonished that they are born to women whose health is always giving (at least a chapter a book) major cause for concern. It seems to me that the more EBD loves her character then the more serious illnesses (or accidents)she bestows upon her !
The books make perfect 'escapist' reading, and I wouldn't part with my copies for anything - even though I quite often conceal them behind wrappers.
I wish the club well and will be joining shortly.

Comments:I have loved Chalet school from 8 yrs old, still have all of them, unfortunatly my 11 year old daughter doesn't appreciate them!!. My best buy was a first edition from a junk shop for 10p. My godmother has 'Gerry goes to school' (EBD'S first published attempt) which she let me read but wouldnt let me keep, I am still teasing her for it 20 years later.
I found CBB last year but have had lots of problems getting on with thier site, this seems so much easier.I would love to meet up with anyone near Oxford, (England) to talk about the CHALET SCHOOL.

Comments:Nadia
Ebay is your best bet for early paperbacks of the Chalet School series. If it is hardbacks you are after then that is more tricky. Occasionally you can be lucky and find them in charity or secondhand bookshop. Otherwise you are best off with dealers. I will try and email you a list of them if I can find it.

Comments:I became hooked on these books in the sixties and was a member of the original club until the end. I have managed to collect a large percentage of the series and frequently re-read the books from the beginning. I thought I must be the only adult still gaining pleasure from what appears to be !children's books!.
I can't believe that I have only just thought of going online to see if any other people were still interested in them! I am so excited and am joining the new club immediately. These books were such an influence on my life.

Comments:I've been addicted to the Chalet School since I was eleven - I'm thirty now (groan)and have only just completed my collection.
I loved 'The Chalet Girls Grow Up', with one exception - where Jack locks himself in his study and gets a gun out....I can't see him doing that really, but other than that, the book puts the characters in situations that I can rally see happening, like Margot going to Greenham Common and getting arrested!

As an ex librarian I look back with nostalgia at all the wonderful out of print childrens books. Will willingly like to exchange letters with old readers from around the world.

Comments:Will members of the New Chalet Club please accept my sincere apologies for the late arrival of the Spring Journal. This is partly because I was late getting it to the printer, but also because he has been very busy and
unable to print it until after the first May bank holiday. He should print it this week, and I know that the Stuffer will do her very best to get it out quickly.

I am so sorry about this.
