I was born at Wayne
County General Hospital in March 1981. I was raised in New York though so
I never actually knew anything about the hospital I was born in. I came
across the information by accident when I was looking up information on
Harry Houdini because he died in Detroit. I freaked out at first because I
thought that I may have been born in a mental hospital but then there is another post that reassurred me. Just to verify, the hospital had two different divisions,
right? Oddly enough, I wrote a story in college about an abandoned mental
hospital with a little girl ghost and used as inspiration pictures from an
old place in Massachusettes that looks very similiar to Eloise.....very
strange. Well, just thought I would share this info with you all. :)

While I was in Salt Lake City doing genealogy on the John Thompson family of Northville, MI I ran across a probate file of Ida Thompson, his daughter. My great grandmother Leona Thompson-Whipple was part of her probate file. Ida resided in Eloise from 1897 and is found on the 1900 census. Due to an older half brother upon John Thompson's death in 1907, he requested that she become a public pay resident since teh family was unable or unwilling to support her. She lived there until she died. I had no idea of what Eloise Hospital was until I starting searching this website.

I was just at Elloise yesterday. I was so scared when I was in there, that I was crying the whole time. I wanted to get outta there as soon as I heard a baby cry. It could have been real, but then again it could have been my mind playing tricks on me. It was amazing. I would like to visit there again soon. I wanna learn more about the place, and take pictures. And create my own website. I loved it.

I ran across the site almost by accident, and found myself entranced. I remember passing the remaining buildings of Eloise as a child (1950's)and later as a teen. It always gave me the creeps. It seemed sinister and foreboding. In the late 60's I had a high school friend sent there for an unknown condition. Several of us used to visit him there, and I was appalled at the conditions. It reminded me of the movie "snake pit" staring Olivia DeHaviland. Thanks for keeping this site alive, as well as the memory of the poor souls buried at the cemetery. I was never aware of it before, but I'll visit it when I return to the area later this year.

i was sad to hear my mom tell me a while back that the hospital i was born at, was gone. being premature, i was all incubated and everything... my dad was SOOO worried.. but my "cool" pediatric doctor (my mom calls him the hippie with long hair) reassured my dad that i'd pull thru. needless to say, i did, and from my dad recalls, the baby next door, didn't. later, my family would always drive by to go to the airport & i'd look up to the top- the pediatric ward, and pray for the other babies like me, knowing that they'd be stronger and be grateful for the chance to make it. wow... it's gone. but thank you, for being there to help my family and me "make it"... with out, i may not have. (and if i can ever find my doc! thanks dude! :)

take care and until then-

I grew up in the western suburbs of Detroit and I remember driving by Eloise many times and always experiencing sort of a shudder... I'm sensitive to paranormal activity and I wouldn't be surprised if there was a lot of it there. If I recall correctly the buildings used to be painted red to warn people, I suppose, to stay away. I've heard horror stories about the place that would send shivers up your spine. Thanks for keeping this site, the place should have a website in memoriam.

Hello Everyone,
I am a lifetime resident of Westland. I have always lived in NorWayne "ShackTown" and from what I have been told; the duplexs were built as housing for the staff of Eloise. I am yet to find anything on that or when/why the subdivison came about. If you are not familiar with it; it's about 2 miles running from Merriman to Venoy to Wildwood. It starts at Henry Ruff. If you have any insite or knowledge about it, please let me know!! Email me @ sugahsweets2000@yahoo.com

I want to write a book about Eloise; a fictional story and fictional charaters but using Eliose as the main srory.
This site has provided much inspiration!
I will report back as I come along with my writing!!
Wish me luck!

I dont know how I came upon your site, but i love it.
I dont know if you can help with this or not. My husband has always looked for information on his mom who died when he was a baby. His family wont tell him anything about her. All we have is her name and age that are on his birth certicate, that also says place of birth is Eloise. Her name was Jody Zombkowski (Cortes), he was born is 1972, she was 15 at that time. Any information on where to find information is greatly appreciated. Feel free to email anything.

I find this site very interesting. Like so many others here I do had a relative that stayed at Eloise. My grandfather, James Marshall, wa s patient there from the 1960s til his death in the late 1970s.
I heard that alot of the patient records were destroyed.

Your website is amazing!

I just read an article about an abandoned asylum in MA that is being turned into luxury condos. So, I was curious and did a search for Eloise and found your site.

My mother was briefly a mental patient at Eloise once or twice back in the late 60's before she started therapy at Henry Ford Hospital. It's been about 20 years since I've been by the Eloise grounds but I remember how terribly creepy it was. Not a place I liked to be near even in the daytime, let alone the night. But still, it was fascinating!

I'm glad someone has taken enough interest in this place to preserve the memories. Next time I'm in MI, I will have to take a drive by and check it out again.

I have strong feelings for the preservation of the past in order that we learn from it. I was a Music Therapy intern at Eloise 1973-74 under the tutelage of Ms Christine Smith one of the finest human beings and therapists i have ever met. She brought so much joy to the patients. She was trained by Dr. Ira Altschuler a psychiatrist at Eloise. He also had my mother come to play for the patients back maybe back in the 1930's or 40's. Music Therapy was one of the most innovative programs at Eloise and very positive.

My Grandmother was in Eloise for a while back in the 1930's. She wasn't mental but she was born with a heart condition that in those days nobody knew how to help her. My Grandpa said one day a DR he didn't know came up to him and said to get his wife out of there because they were just experimenting on her. My Grandpa went right up to her room and started packing her stuff while the Dr and nurses yelled at him that she was too sick to leave and that she wouldn't even make it through the night. She lived 5 years after that. Does anyone know if there are any records left of patients somewhere? Her name was Mary Barone and she was there sometime in the 1930's.

This is a great site! I used to work at Eloise in the J building about 1983. I was a teenager working for Wayne county who at that time had the J building as the main food distribution for lunches at senior citizen programs. The place was creepy and worse yet was the FOUL odor that hung around the parkinglot and in the tunnels. One day the board of health showed up and I showed them around then showed them the door to the tunnel and when they opend it we all just stood there but no one would go in. They each took a turn with their clip boards peeking in and writing their findings. The tunnel smelled pretty bad and was filled with cob webs and junk as far as I could see. They closed the place down shortly after that and the business moved to Flat Rock.
I was just thinking of how creepy but interesting that place was. When I wasn't in the office I walked around checking everything out. I wish I would have gotten pictures back then but who knew it would become so historical.

Hi I love your site! I have an interesting tale about my connection to Eloise. And a couple questions? First I just found out (through the 1930 census) that my husband's great grandmother Mabel Duprey was an inmate in Eloise for at least 10 years possibly longer but since I don't have the date of her death... Anyway What's interesting about this new info is that she was supposed to be dead already. You see my mother in-law was always told by her father and aunts (sisters to Mabel) that Mabel died when James (my mother in- laws father and son to Mabel) was only 5 yrs. old. He was born in 1915 so that would place Mabel's death at around 1920? (I have never been able to find death records on her) But now I find she's in the 1930 census as an inmate in Pontiac State Hospital in Pontiac? (This is the same hospital right)? I know that she is buried in Saginaw, MI Have been to her grave. well what there is to see of it anyway since she has no marker. Her parents and 2 of her siblings are buried there also and all have markers except her and with them all saying she died in 1920 I'm thinking they were ashamed of her. Sad really. Her husband was James Duprey SR. He disappears around the same time as Mabel I can't find death records on either one. If anyone knows how I could get a hold of any records from The hospital I'd appreciate it. I just have to find out more about this woman!! PLEASE HELP!

Did anyone ever find out if there was a list of names of people who stayed at Eloise and/or buried on the grounds.
While looking for my biological family I have found that my grandfather was in Eloise in 1948-50, and died there. That is all I can find out about him at this time.

I love this site. I chck it regularly, though I never sign anymore. I just wanted to tell an interesting thing that happened a couple of weeks ago...
I went out to Eloise, it was still warm out, to check out the bridge and take some photos. As I was at the bridge a story idea popped into my head and I dismissed it quickly, though I have been told I write well, I rarely finish a story...oh wait I have NEVER finished one.
Well, I came home and sat down here on the PC and began the story without really thinking of what I was getting into. Four sleepless nights and 41,000 words later, I finished.
The story takes place at a fictionalized Eloise, the facts remain, but I had to change the name and such.
I am not sure why I finished this story, it is not the type I usually write, anyhow...
Maybe it was supernatural, or maybe Eloise inspired me. Either way...

I love your web site! I was born in Eloise in October 1976, and never knew a thing about it. I couldn't find Eloise on any maps or anything. I lived in Taylor before my family moved to the Morgantown, West Virginia area in the 80's. Now, all these years later, I finally know something about the place where I was born. On my next trip to Taylor, I am definetly checking Eloise out!

one more item i just remembered. I was told that upon notice that the complex was being closed in 1984, "the workers basically trashed the place in anger". (which is why the floors I visited looked so trashed) they never really cleaned up after the fact (again this was about two years ago so I dont know what renovations or work has been done on those floors. But there's something intriguing about this complex and I find myself drawn to find out more.

I was fortunate (or infortunate) enough to to actually be able to explore at least 3 or 4 floors of the Kay Beard Building about two years ago. I was associated with an organization located in the county building and simply asked if I could have a peek. I went up the defiled stairways with dead birds and rodents (I am not making this up) as the old OTIS elavator (which still apparently worked as I was told) looked way too freaky for my tastes to try. some floors were locked off. i was alone. I dont believe in hauntings, but the feeling I got while walking through those flooors changes my attitude. Old wayne county hospital records were still kept there as well as restraints and electroschock equipment. The overalll feeling was haunted and "it just wasnt right" most notably was a picture at the end of the main corridor on one of the floors lokoing at it once it seemed right but upon closer inspection the damn thing was actually hung upside down! I will not go back there alone. However I do plan on revisiting with my camera and I still have enough permission to actually go through there again.

My heart and soul were changed that day that I explored that building on the floors could access. and I didnt even know about the cemetary until I happened upon this website!

I tried not to imagine what went on there but I could almost hear the patients screaming and the sensation of agony.

Well, thats my two cents.

My great aunt, Annie Hazel Ingram, my uncle, Troy Banks Ingram and my grandfather, Merial Milam, all worked at Eloise. I wish I had asked more questions when they were alive. I have a few pictures that were taken outside and one inside of the Class of 1955 for nurse's aids and orderlys.

I was looking for info on how to find their personel records of the dates they worked there.

Any info would be helpful.

Sincerely,
C Jones

P.S. I did talk with my step grandma and she said grandpa would not talk much about the hospital. He was the man in charge over one of the floors. He told her the patients did crazy things and he hated having to restrain them for there own safety.

To me, Eloise is a part of my family's history and I am just intrigued by it all. It was like its own city and now it is being all torn down. I passed by their in 1993 on the way to my grandpa's funeral. I wish I had taken pictures then.

Eloise,

The name seems to belong to our family line. Merrimam road is named after my Grandmother who was a nurse who worked at Eloise, and of course, at that time woman were expected to stay at home. She didn't. I hear stories that farm adjacent to it used the patients for working in the fields for nothing. I don't know if this is true. I just hear it from my family.

They had my birthmother and she had us.. (another duh...) Anyways, we are both so interested in Eloise, you have no idea. Our roots are there, and as of yesterday, we went walking all around the buildings. We're looking for any and all info, pics, anything ya all know about Eloise.. We are going to go on a "dig" in two weeks over to Potters field.. Anyone wanna come with us? Please email me with any info ya all have.. Thanks...

Those interested in the history of Eloise may wish to buy the book Eloise: Poorhouse, Farm, Asylum and Hospital 1839-1984 which was published by Arcadia Publishing in May 2002. The book contains over 220 historic photographs of Eloise and can be purchased on-line (www.bn.com and www.amazon.com) as well as at Border's, Barnes and Noble and Little Professor (in Dearborn, Michigan.) This book is also being sold by Friends of Eloise (at meetings) and also by the Westland Historical Museum.

I was just wondering if any one else here was born at Wayne County General? Me and my two sisters were. In my baby book my mom wrote Eloise instead of Wayne County General. I remember thinking I was born at an Asylum before I found out it was separate building. I too have always beeninterested in Eloise. I find it intruiging and my and my friends will be venturing back to where I was born sometime next week. Funny thing, I was born on friday the 13th.

Hi Everyone,

I work in mental health and I study spirituality and spirtis themselves. If you want to know more about Asylums you can get a great book back in print called "Christmas in Purgitory". It was written in 1974 and I found out that it recently came back into print. I am also looking for people to contact to do Ghost hunts in my area (Macomb County). We have many GREAT old buildings/spiritual breeding grounds in Macomb (Esp. the Octagon House in Washington Twp.). Please e-mail me if you are interested in doing some hunting. By the way... VERY GOOD Site.

Hello.

This is a great site. Thanks for your efforts.

I am writing from Saskatchewan (western Canada) to invite your visitors to the website we've created for the Saskatchewan Mental Hospital at Weyburn. Please visit the site and join our forum. Actually the site has been established as part of a site-specific performance which will happen in a disused wing of the hospital Aug 30, 31, Sept. 1 and Sept. 6,7,8.

We hope that the website and performance will help preserve the building as a heritage site. As with many connected with Eloise and other hospitals across America, we're trying to preserve a fascinating pathway to the past.

I love this site and just wanted to share that my freinds and I were all very close to Eloise and visited frequently in our teenage years. We were always greeted with a sense of peace and love from within the buildings and surrounding areas. We miss her!!

I have an art / photography page with some old photos of the Walter P. building taken in 1992 shortly before that facility was torn down. I'm currently searching for an old video tape that I may have as well. Check out the photos on my site listed above.

Spent about 4 hours in Butler cemrtary the night of the 25th into the morning of the 26th. About the strangest thing that happened (besides a very strong feeling of peace and tranquility) was a pickup truck that drove up and snapped some pictures from the road, then waved and yelled "Thanks!" as they drove away. I don't think there's any way the passengers could have seen us. It was about 130 or 2am and we were standing down in the valley in the center of the cemetary with the dark hill to our backs and dressed in black. Any chance it was one of you who hang out at this site?

My grandma was in and out of Eloise for years, and my grandfather worked there in like the 1930's 1940's. That was pretty sweet finding that out. If you guys can get any records up or have any already let me know ( email me )
thx

ps: is there a way to get into the firehouse? I live right by Eloise and want to explore it.

Hey great site, I have a Grandmother who was committed to Eloise a few times in the 60'-70's. She is still living today in a Nursing home next to Seaway Hospital. She never has anything nice to say about Eloise. I would really love to get in those tunnels. I'm a resident of Flat Rock, I'd like to get up there and see what its all about. This place sounds like a good site for MTV to do its FEAR show on. Wouldn't that be interesting. By the way there is a hidden cemetary here in Flat Rock called the Vreeland Cemetary behind some residential buildings and next to the Huron River. Its local legend that its haunted. If anyone is interested please feel free to contact me. I think there are around 10-15 graves there. Spooky at Night

Great site, keep up the good work

I used to live near the Eloise Complex, actually on part of the former pig farm, next to the potters field and Ganong/Butler Cemetary. Although we have moved, my daughter still talks about the shadow people that visited her, and we have some pictures with strange orbs on them taken outside our home !!!. I would like to find out if there were a "Harvey (she says he's an alcoholic), and a Mr Gibbs" on the listings for patients at Eloise. She often was found talking to "imaginary friends" outside our old house. I just find this a little strange. Please feel free to email me with any information, I will attempt to put up a site with the orbs.

I visited Eloise in 1993 while 7 months pregnant. There were no security guards and only a broken fence so we walked right in. We spent the day touring the buildings and tunnels. We found all kinds of interesting things including some medical records. While visiting this site I have the same feeling in my stomach as I did when I was actually there. Not something you can explain until you actually go inside and feel it for yourself. Great site and I love the info that was included. I will definately check back.

This site is so sad. You could have been in this hell hole. It uncaring and I'm sure the people who died here are sad that so many people enjoy their suffering. The people responsible for caring for the humans should be in jail. I'm sorry but I have compassion for humans if they have a disease of mental illness or cancer illness.
Making fun of it is sick.
Are we going to open a site for the Cancer center next.
Disease is disease if it attacks the mind or any other part of a beings body.
Please don't make this a joke & have respect for the dead.

Hi! My name is Sandy. I had a gradmother who was in Eloise in the early 1900's. I am doing a family tree and I too, like the others, feel a connection with Eloise. Even though, I have never seen the hospital other than the pictures on the web. I feel sad for the people who were commited there. I would love to find out more of my grandmother, Julia Krygier born circa 1892 and died circa 1936. If any names surface as to hospital patients, I would appreciate an email. eswojtas@i-star.com
Thanks!!! for all your hard work. The site is very interesting. Keep up the great work. You deserve a whole lot of credit for bringing this information to all the people.
Thanks Again,
Sandy in Michigan

I really enjoyed your pictures and text regarding Eloise. I'm a musician songwriter and in the process of finishing a song called "Eloise" so I was searching the Web for references. I had no idea that there was such interest in the place and its history.
I live in ypsi and drive by the site often. It's rare that I feel such strong spontaneous inspiration but it was like the place has been calling out to me and feeding me words.
After seeing your site I think I understand why.
If any of you would like once I finalize and copyright the lyrics I'll email or post them. I have pretty modest recording equipment and skills but I'd also be happy to share the demo recording with you when it's done.

I think your info is great. Last year, I went solo behind Kroger, and followed the river east. I did see the stairs and the bridge. I thought once summer came and the leaves, and follige gave me shade and not so noticed, I could make a run for the back of remaining structures. Haven't yet. I believe somehow, their is access too the tunnels. in 1993, we entered the tunnels from a building right on Mich. Ave. We found a set of stairs going down, and the rest is history. We toured the place for almost 6 hours, finding even the morgue, and most interesting, we came to a tunnel which I belive was conected to Annapolis Hospital. 100 yards in front of us was lights on the walls. Maybe their is access through the hospital. Maybe In the basement of the Kay Beard building?

I went and found the stairs and the bridge and documented the whole thing with my video camera. Now I need to go back because I gotta see where the entrance to the Tunnels are! Me and my friend talked to the security guy working at the main building and he let us walk around all the buildings and didn't mind. He was real cool to us. I gotta go back still and go in the little museum thing they got. Also he said that there tearing down/renavating the buildings but LEAVING THE TOWER because its a trade mark. LOVE the site!

Hey, everyone! I am glad that you all like the site, and appreciate your patience as I try to update and set up pages as quickly as I can.

The cemetery page is up and running, there's a great picture on it and a great little article to explain everything, so check that out!

There are a few more pages that still need to be set up, and that will happen soon..

Enjoy the site and keep coming back as there is much to be added and many more interesting things to learn about Eloise!

Thanx for the info, I gotta see where the stairs go now! Can somebody give me an idea of how best to not get seen by security?
Also, I think "Eloise Cemetary" has been fenced up and the sign taken away, I went looking for it and must have passed it since I found a different cemetary a little further down Henry Ruff, in the middle of little saigon.

Hello everyone. I just found out that my grandmother was committed to a mental instution in the late 1930's and was institutionalized until her death in 1998. I was under the impression she was decessed all my life. I live in Texas so I don't have access to much (any) information. It could be that she was committed to ELOISE?

Hey, everyone! I found out today that my Great Aunt's father-in-law was sent to Eloise...

Supposedly, he was being taken care of by his wife because he had Alziehmers, but became violent. He was sent to Eloise and spent the remainder of his life strapped to a bed. Kinda sad, eh?

I see our site is doing quite well, I am glad.. we've got a ton of new info that will be added soon, so keep checking back!!

hey, everyone! Hope you are enjoying the site!

Well, Nick has left for basic and tech training in the Air Force, and due to this, it looks like Tales Of Eloise has been temporarily put on hold... Since he's the tech savvy one and all.

It should be updated sometime within the next three to four months because Nick will be getting a lab-top after his training is over.

He will be missed so much by me, his friends and family.. I love you, Nick and I miss you SO MUCH.. Please be safe in whatever you do.
