Hi, decent site you have...im not so much of an..arachnologist? lol as in i have never kept any spiders...i thought of having a chile rose but...im scared i could kill it by accident they are very delicate things, and im mostly a herpetologist! but...i have this house speder lol i named frank, he lives in my bedroom....and he is suprisingly big, and, he isnt as shy ...as many are, i was just laying on the bed messing around on the pc...and i felt something on my arm..brush past it, it was him! i had to catch him and place him near one of his webs because i didnt want to tread on him by accident...he is my freind he eats things i dont like...so he has a welcome pass to anywhere he chooses

anyway that got a bit log keep up the good work, if i get a few spare £ il donate a little also

Hi Nick! I stumbled across your site when looking to identify a strange spider that I have never seen before. I am a Lepidopterist who loves nature generally. Spiders I tend to admire from afar! I am still unable to correctly id the spider in question, it may be a Nursery spider or a Wolf spider? It was laying stretched out and head down on my daughter's door frame tonight. The front couple of legs (pairs) were laying in a straight line in front and the back ones were likewise behind, they were dark brown. The head had a strangely fluted leading edge vaguely similar to the Florida crab spider. The body was long and like brown velvet with creamy edges down each side. I guess the body was about an inch long maybe slightly longer. Including the legs it was about 4" long. I have studied wildlife all my long (55) years but this one was a first for me! This was seen in Ashford Kent tonight 16th September 2007. If it is still in situ tomorrow I wll take it to someone who will be able to id it and let you know the result. Best wishes, Jan

The Google Adsense ads that are honing in on the keyword spider in order to sell traps and pesticides don't seem appropriate for a site like this. Adsense's site says "filter unwanted ads" is an option.

Hi Nick,

Stumbled across your website through the wonderful(!?) powers of google.
I am EXTREMELY arachnaphobic (sp?) in other words looking through your site has sent shivers up my spine!
The problem that I have is this. After coming back the kitchen I return to my living room and go to pick up a glass with a tiny bit of fruit juice in it and low and behold, whos sitting in the bottom of the glass but the creepiest and weirdest looking hellish looking spidery beastie you have ever seen (well, not you as you have probably seen quite a few!). But for me, a person who becomes paralized with fear upon seeing one, it is a right creepy little bastard!
I was wondering if you could assist me in identifying it as it is becoming an obsession as I have never seen one so horrible in all my life.

Basically it's 2 back legs are really really long. It has one really fat front leg, and the two front legs are bent up like horrible sharp spiked things *eep* HELP!

Need help.

Have very large spiders in my yard and I can not seem to identify them. Brown legs are brown and white and they have white circles with a black dot in the middle of the circle, the are quite large and spin the perfect spider web. I live in jersey but can not live with these things in my yard. Can anyone identify them. Want to know what I am up against.

Hi Nick

Have just used your website to try and identify a spider resting on an ornamental frog in my pond. It is a bit difficult from the picture but it is probably a male Dolomedes fimbriatus. Apart from enjoying his presence is there anybody/society that I should inform?

Yours

John

Just visited your site and I'm very impressed. I'm really not a spider liking guy but your site has some really cool pictures. I'm from California, but currently I'm living in Belgium. I've seen some cool looking spiders that I can't find any info on. Maybe I could email you some pics. My wife wants to know if they are dangerous since we have an 8th month old daughter that likes to crawl and get into things. Well, cool site and lates!!!!!!

Hello. I found an odd spider in my garden about an inch and half across which I indentified from your website as a ARANEUS QUADRATUS,although not a spider freak I couldn't see it come to harm so released him (I think) into a field at back of my Garden. Which is close to Leeds.
So if I find anymore eight legged wonders I'll be back to your marvellous website.
Many Thanks
PS I lived in Australia for awhile and developed a heathly respect for spiders after a fairly close encounter with a small funnel web spider.

im quite curious as to what you do for a living. if its anything to do with photographing and categorizing spiders, i would love a job like that some day. what an adrenaline rush. im a bit nervous around spiders but at the same time they fascinate me. i actually did find a spider out in the woods in lansingburgh, new york that you dont seem to have any pistures of. it has thorns but not like those on the orb spider. it resembles and orb spider but not the one you have pictures of. its colors were dark and the thorns were not so distinct. any clue?

http://www.pbase.com/antjes Wonderful website! I enjoyed your jumping spider descriptions a lot. Jumping spiders cured my arachnophobia actually, when I started photographing them, fear turned first into respect and then into affection. When the spider who used to live at my door died (he lost a fight, obviously), I felt so bad - I wouldn't have thought a while ago I would feel bad about a spider's death. I think that just happens once you look into a creature's eyes and it looks back at you.

I'm really scared of spiders, but my sister has just done a Phd in the use of spiders as a pest control agent in brasica crops and after looking at some of her samples through microscopes i have found a little bit more out about them,
these photographs are great, my sister has a really good one of a crab spider and plenty of others (perhaps u would be intrested in them)

http://www.flyerstarter.com Maybe you can answer this question:

Once I was sitting with my mates watching telly or some such, then I just happened to look at something on the wall in the corner of my eye.

It was a spider, so incredibly ****in' big, we were sitting there saying to each other.. "No, there's no way that can be real". It was one of the BIGGEST spiders i'd EVER seen, in a zoo, in books, etc. We thought someone had placed a fake plastic spider on the wall as a gag.

Then it MOVED. And we screamed.. the bravest of us immediately obtained some sort of blunt instrument and promptly bludgeoned this monster to death.

My question is, though, upon inspection of it's corpse, within 5 minutes of it's demise it was shrivelled to a very small percentage of it's size when it was alive..?!

It's corpse was hardly impressive and did nothing to embellish our story of this enormous spider. Any ideas as to why this spider shrank exponentially immediately upon its death? Cam house spiders retain a large amount of fluid or such?

Thanks

Hi, Nick. Your page is helping me cure my insane fear of spiders!
I have such an admiration for these complex creature, I want to like them, they are fascinating and dramatic, sometimes even beautiful, though if I find one on the kitchen floor I nearly pass out with fear.

The housespider that lives in the kitchen is doing a great job of pestcontrol, it has eaten all the ants (i think it did, did it?) and stays under the stove or behind the cupboards when I am in the kitchen. Every morning when I open the kitchen door it appears from under the stove for a few seconds, then retreats out of sight for the rest of the day. Is this coincidence? Is it deliberate behaviour?

I would love to learn more about the common housespider and other spiders around the house. Has anyone written a book about spiders around the house in Britain? Do email me if you have information about this.

Kind wishes, Maria

http:// - n/a - ...just to say Thanks, and Well Done so far.

Trawling to find any clues to what had (to layman's eyes) the
jizz of a black widow minus the red. Balance of probabilities,
available info, blah de blah ... so hop and a skip (well okay,
some links and some googling) led me to your pics of the
corner-loving Steatoda bipunctata ... which I think it probably is.
Oh well.. :oS

Still, keep up the good work (though please try not to lose sight
of the various socio-economic and environmental issues
surrounding fossil-fuelled global travel, eh?)

Thanks again anyway Nick,

Best Wishes - Mark :o)
