| Comments: | 1st, Sheila Helser did a fine job putting on the 'Oil Country' site.
2nd, I am so thankful and feel blessed to have grown up in Venango County. 3rd, Now in my later years several people have helped me to bring all of my family history together. My ancestors came to America 20 June 1837. After the genealogy and study of the family here locally a cousin found three generations of the family in Kannawurf, Thuringia, Germany going back to 1745. There's more, much more but for all that has been done I sincerely say 'Thank You' to Cammy, Joyce, Dana, Larry Tom, Marianne and many others. |

| Comments: | I'm at a loss trying to find my husband's 2G-Grandfather.
His name is Denis Joseph Hobbins, b. 1855 in Ireland; migrated to Canada and then to Venango County, PA. We've been told he's buried in Franklin Cemetery but cannot seem to verify. We would very much appreciate a date of death on him and his son William Gordon Hobbins, 1881-abt 1926. This is the info I have on Denis: Denis Joseph Hobbins (1855 - abt 1901) Based upon the "Ontario, Canada Voter Lists" Denis Hobbins: 1) Simcoe: shows he was a tenant 1879 2) Gray: shows he was a tenant 1880 3) Horton: shows he was a tenant, Roman Catholic 1881 ( No record for 1882) 4) Hill: shows he was a tenant; Roman Catholic 1883 5) Hill: shows he was a tenant; Roman Catholic 1884 Census Information: 1) Denis was born 1855 in Ireland (Probably County Tipperary) * Tipperary, Monsea, Carrick Ireland, Index to Griffith’s Valuation, 1848-1864 (Land Holders) * Tipperary, Kilbarron, Glenbower, Ireland, Index to Griffith’s Valuation, 1848-1864 (Land Holders) 2) Immigrated from Ireland to Canada 1875 3) Married Margaret Stewart 19 Jun 1878 in Middlesex, Canada 4) Daughter Mary T. Hobbins was born 1879 in Ontario. 5) Son William Gordon Hobbins was born 2 Jan 1882 in Ontario 6) Immigrated to U.S. (Franklin City, Venango, Pennsylvania) abt 1885; did not file for naturalization status 7) 1900 U.S. Federal Census shows Denis and family in Franklin, Venango, Pennsylvania, USA 8) Possibly buried at Franklin Cemetery, Franklin County Pennsylvania based upon this note I found: "1881 census in Canada with the info is the line i am tracing. here are my problems (1) I found the Marriage record on line at Ancestry and the date, witnesses’ and place corresponds with info written in a bible that one of the family members hold. however it list's (Patrick Hobbins) as Dennis's father. On Dennis's Death cert. it list his father name as(William Hobbins) (2) Dennis and Margaret moved to Franklin Pa. from Canada and are buried in Franklin Cemetery, the record at the cemetery has Dennis Joseph Hobbins as does his tombstone reads, The obit's in the Franklin paper list his name as (Daniel J. Hobbins). Dennis's children William Gordon Hobbins and Mary Hobbins Crowmack's death cert. also list their father's name as Daniel. (3) Iin the 1881 census it list's a Mary O'Keefe living with Dennis-Daniel? and Margaret, but Margaret Stewart's mother's name is Anna Maxwell and Dennis-Daniel's mother's name on his Death Cert say Mary Keough so she is not a mother or mother-in-law." As of 15 Sep 2009 there is no further trace of Denis Joseph Hobbins. (See William Gordon Hobbins 1881) Warm Regards and thanks again for help provided. Dev Hobbins |

| Comments: | James Major b 10 Sep 1782 Married Elizabeth Shorts 9 Sep 1802. James died May 18 1844. Elizabeth died 3 Feb 1845. Both are buried at Hebron Church Cemetery; graves are marked "MAGOR". James bought land in 1811 in exchange for whiskey. He owned a tavern on old Rt 8 which burned three times, earning it the name "burnt" house. James was a Veteran of the War of 1812. He also owned a grist mill.
James father, also named James Major, supposedly drowned in Beaver Creek, leaving an unnamed wife, daughter, and son James. 1800 PA Census lists a James Major, about age 18, as Head of Household. I surmise this is my gggg. Have been stuck at this point more than 20 years. Can anyone help me? Iland Walter from Grove City recently died. She had very detailed research regarding the Major family. She states in a letter written to my family in 1964 that Ann Walter was a sister of her great grandfather, Peter Walter, and Wm. Major was a brother of her great grandmother Sarah Major Walter, which made our two branches of the family doubly related . Have tried unsuccessfully to gain access to Island Walter's papers. Last I heard they were in the hands of the executor of her estate Mr. Paul Gilmore. I wish to know if he has released them to the library, historical society, etc.? Will pay someone to help me blast through this brick wall. Waiting for a reply, Suellen Major Hill. I love Franklin; would love to live there. This is the most wonderful website I have found. Thanks a million for developing much needed access to information. James Major's son, William was born 18 Nov 1803 in Irwin Twp. He married Ann Walter 11 Feb 1822. William and Ann Walter Major moved from Venango County to Meigs County, OH in the 1850's. William Major is buried near Pomeroy, OH in the Letart Falls Cemetery. Their son Richard Shorts Major settled in Greenup County KY . Richard S. Major married Rachel Shannon whose ancestors were prominent in Venango County. They were the parents of my grandfather John Sylvester Major, my father being Albert Meadows Major of South Shore, Greenup Co. KY |

| Comments: | All of us who are fortunate enough to have grown up in Venango county have considerable family history available to them. Sheila Barr Helser does a wonderful job of presenting the highlights in Venango's history. For the most part people who came here in the 19th century stayed here. But to properly search a family history requires local genealogists as I found out in my Glass family search. Joyce Neidich is the person I chose to do my family. She is a wonderful researcher and has stayed with me and brought new family information and articles to light. Joyce was instrumental in 'finding' my GGrandfather's Civil War sharpshooter rifle which is shown on this site under military. If you seriously want your family's history contact this lovely lady - Joyce Neidich. |

I was told, during a family reunion in 2005, that a house at 5484 Route 8, Barkeyville (On the main street) used to be the Latchaw homestead. If anyone knows for sure that this is true, I have a photo of the house when it had a porch across the front in the 1800's. My plan is to send it to the people who live there if this is actually true. I am also looking for a missing photo of Isaiah Latchaw that my Daddy remembers his Mom, Dora, talking about. If this isn't the place for this information, please forward it to someone who knows the Latchaw family. Thanks for your help, Linda |

His g-grandparents names are William and Mary Welsh. They were both born in Ireland (abt 1840 & 1848 respectively) and their oldest Daughter, Mary, was also born in Ireland (abt. 1868). They appear on the 1880 Emlenton, Venango, Pa. census (spelled WELSCH) along with 5 other children born in Pa. Their names are B. E.(Barbara?)(abt. 1870), Delia (abt 1873), Annie (abt 1874), Michal (abt 1877) and Thomas (abt 1879). I am looking for William and Mary's death dates/cemeteries/certificates. One of their children may also have died early and her name is Anna. I am also seeking the births dates/places of the 5 children born in Pa. The family was thought to be Catholic and if there is a Catholic Cemetery may be buried there. I know this is a lot and I would appreciate anything you may find. Thank you in advance! Wanda |

Would like to find a Marriage record for Daniel & wife(name unknown)I think they were married about 1882 according to the 1900 census of Jackson, Monroe, Ohio, wife's name was Crockett, on a Baptismal record for his sister's child it listed Dan & Bea Kennedy as God- parents, in the newspaper article about their death it states that all her sibblings lived in Pa. except John CROWELL, also states they both were Natives of Venango County, Pa. | Comments: | Thank you so much for the cemetery list. It seems to stop at the "r's", so not sure if there is more or not. Am trying to put some things together for my uncle, age 90, in the Masonic Home in Franklin, Indiana. He has some health issues and am trying to work quickly as he asked to see what genealogy information I have put together. My Clark and probably the Dempsey and Cather ancestors are buried in the Franklin Cemetery and was hoping to see them listed, but do not. Clarks are definitely there. Guessing about the others as they lived in Franklin when they died. Can you give me any help in trackking down this information? If you can and need details about them please call or e-mail me and will provide all I have. So far I know they were from Venango and Clarion counties in the 1800's and 1900's. | Comments: | I appreciate your lovely pictures of our historical marker.at Mayes Forks, Pa. I ordered, bought and installed this marker in 1997, and worked for three years proving the location of the Venango Path TO THE HISTORICAL mUSEUM OF pA. NW Pa. has fascinating early pioneer history that has gone undocumented. The Seneca Indians thought our big spring, which never freezes, mystical and did much prehistoric camping near the Path at Mayes Forks. The Mayes came to this early settlement, the first out. , side of Fort Franklin, by 1818, stright from Ulster Ireland. and became innkeepers. The house dates back to l8l0, but an earlier log hotel up on the Path was in service before l800. The present house was built to accomodate stagecoach traffic on new route 8 in l810. |

| Comments: | Wow!! I've visited lots of websites across the country - and even in the U.K. Have also had some experience photographing cemeteries - so understand how challenging it can be. This is wonderful work -- Hope you've gotten some recognition from county/state/national societies as this is truly excellent. I plan to use your website as an example when I talk to others about how best to communicate the sense of what the cemeteries are like (They all have their own character, don't they) as well as the data they contain. Well done!! |

| Comments: | Please help--We are descendants of William and Zelphy Brown who was a native of New York and in the Revolutionary War. Royal Brown, I believe, was one of his sons. How could I get further information, such as birth records, marriage records, and death certificates, to prove that I am a Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR).
Furthermore, most of the descendants of the above people moved to WI and many of them settled in Monroe County--where I was born. They are buried in cemeteries mostly near Sparta, WI. Some of these family members that moved West settled in areas further West such as Arkansas, Nebraska, etc. I also have information on them. Is there anyone living in Venango County, PA that is a direct descendant to William Brown? How can I find the cemeteries where any of my relatives may have been buried in Venango County, PA? Thank you for any help you can give me. |

| Comments: | It is with pleasure that I find your nice Web Site. My
aunts would tell of visiting family in Oil City in the 1920's. She was Vallie Blanch Boyd born about 1872. She married Charles Rankin born 1871 in W. Middlesex,Mercer, PA. They were married in Franklin,Venango,Pa and had a family which I find on the census. I would like to know where they are buried and if they have a Margaret (unknown) perhaps Wyant buried near them. Margaret raised my grand-father Woodward Wyant who was born in East Brady, PA and raised a family in Clearfield, Pa. Thank you for any info. |

| Comments: | Several years ago, I was in the Franklin Pioneer Cemetary where I found my ex-husband's GGG grandfather. His and his wife's graves were in the very back of the cemetary. Their names were James & Mary Martin. There was a flag on James' grave where he was marked as having been in the Revolutionary War. They are neither mentioned in this. We were told at the time that the DAR was revitalizing the cemetary. Are his records elsewhere? Somewhere I have pictures of the head-stones. I was thrilled to have found them. Thanks.
