| Comments: | James Major b 10 Sep 1782 Married Elizabeth Shorts 9 Sep 1802. James died May 18 1844. Elizabeth died 3 Feb 1845. Both are buried at Hebron Church Cemetery; graves are marked "MAGOR". James bought land in 1811 in exchange for whiskey. He owned a tavern on old Rt 8 which burned three times, earning it the name "burnt" house. James was a Veteran of the War of 1812. He also owned a grist mill.
James father, also named James Major, supposedly drowned in Beaver Creek, leaving an unnamed wife, daughter, and son James. 1800 PA Census lists a James Major, about age 18, as Head of Household. I surmise this is my gggg. Have been stuck at this point more than 20 years. Can anyone help me? Iland Walter from Grove City recently died. She had very detailed research regarding the Major family. She states in a letter written to my family in 1964 that Ann Walter was a sister of her great grandfather, Peter Walter, and Wm. Major was a brother of her great grandmother Sarah Major Walter, which made our two branches of the family doubly related . Have tried unsuccessfully to gain access to Island Walter's papers. Last I heard they were in the hands of the executor of her estate Mr. Paul Gilmore. I wish to know if he has released them to the library, historical society, etc.? Will pay someone to help me blast through this brick wall. Waiting for a reply, Suellen Major Hill. I love Franklin; would love to live there. This is the most wonderful website I have found. Thanks a million for developing much needed access to information. James Major's son, William was born 18 Nov 1803 in Irwin Twp. He married Ann Walter 11 Feb 1822. William and Ann Walter Major moved from Venango County to Meigs County, OH in the 1850's. William Major is buried near Pomeroy, OH in the Letart Falls Cemetery. Their son Richard Shorts Major settled in Greenup County KY . Richard S. Major married Rachel Shannon whose ancestors were prominent in Venango County. They were the parents of my grandfather John Sylvester Major, my father being Albert Meadows Major of South Shore, Greenup Co. KY |

We have family photos back to the John and Catherine Woods Whan from Vanango County. We can see that John's father Francis was the son of William Whann who was the cashier for the Bank of Columbia from 1801 to 1821. But we cannot get past to where did William Whann come from? We do not have a birth year or place. |

Sheila Barr Helser does a wonderful job of presenting the highlights in Venango's history. For the most part people who came here in the 19th century stayed here. But to properly search a family history requires local genealogists as I found out in my Glass family search. Joyce Neidich is the person I chose to do my family. She is a wonderful researcher and has stayed with me and brought new family information and articles to light. Joyce was instrumental in 'finding' my GGrandfather's Civil War sharpshooter rifle which is shown on this site under military. My great-grandmother was Latha Iona Blauser (or Blosser) whi was born in President in about 1885. My great-grandfather was Daniel Gordon Madden, who was born in Brady's Bend in 1877 and grew up in Oil City. Billy' was an early Ford dealer. 'A.B.' had the Kodak store downtown and may well have made some of the 1890-1950(?) photographs you have. I have boxes of Franklin, PA, photos!Olive came from Mineral Twp. Aunt Anna Wilt was a maiden lady. Great Uncle Willard was something of a recluse. A.B. and Olive lived at 513 11th Street. (Google Earth images suggest that the house is still there.) Lorenzo Wilt was A.B.'s father. I would like to know more of Olive B. Williams antecedents. A.B. and Olive had five children: Glenn A. Wilt, Eleanor Wilt, Francis Wilt, Louise Wilt Bull (my mother) and Ruth Wilt Tilton, all now deceased. His g-grandparents names are William and Mary Welsh. They were both born in Ireland (abt 1840 & 1848 respectively) and their oldest Daughter, Mary, was also born in Ireland (abt. 1868). They appear on the 1880 Emlenton, Venango, Pa. census (spelled WELSCH) along with 5 other children born in Pa. Their names are B. E.(Barbara?)(abt. 1870), Delia (abt 1873), Annie (abt 1874), Michal (abt 1877) and Thomas (abt 1879). I am looking for William and Mary's death dates/cemeteries/certificates. One of their children may also have died early and her name is Anna. I am also seeking the births dates/places of the 5 children born in Pa. The family was thought to be Catholic and if there is a Catholic Cemetery may be buried there. I know this is a lot and I would appreciate anything you may find. Thank you in advance! Wanda |

Mom and dad and oldest child were born in Ireland...the rest in Pa. Their names are William and Mary Welsh and Children are Mary, B.E. (Barbara?), Delia, Annie, Michal and Thomas.

Am researching the KENNEDY/KENEDY Family for a friend, Archibald KENEDY & Maria(Mary) MC CAULEY thru their son Daniel 1860-1902 and wife died Crossing the Ohio River Feb. 23, 1902 buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Sistersville, Tyler, W.V. they left 7 children, six of the children were born in Pa. Would like to find a Marriage record for Daniel & wife(name unknown)I think they were married about 1882 according to the 1900 census of Jackson, Monroe, Ohio, wife's name was Crockett, on a Baptismal record for his sister's child it listed Dan & Bea Kennedy as God- parents, in the newspaper article about their death it states that all her sibblings lived in Pa. except John CROWELL, also states they both were Natives of Venango County, Pa. My Clark and probably the Dempsey and Cather ancestors are buried in the Franklin Cemetery and was hoping to see them listed, but do not. Clarks are definitely there. Guessing about the others as they lived in Franklin when they died. Can you give me any help in trackking down this information? I ordered, bought and installed this marker in 1997, and worked for three years proving the location of the Venango Path TO THE HISTORICAL mUSEUM OF pA. NW Pa. has fascinating early pioneer history that has gone undocumented. The Seneca Indians thought our big spring, which never freezes, mystical and did much prehistoric camping near the Path at Mayes Forks. The Mayes came to this early settlement, the first out. , side of Fort Franklin, by 1818, stright from Ulster Ireland. and became innkeepers. The house dates back to l8l0, but an earlier log hotel up on the Path was in service before l800. The present house was built to accomodate stagecoach traffic on new route 8 in l810. |

How could I get further information, such as birth records, marriage records, and death certificates, to prove that I am a Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR).
Furthermore, most of the descendants of the above people moved to WI and many of them settled in Monroe County--where I was born. They are buried in cemeteries mostly near Sparta, WI. Some of these family members that moved West settled in areas further West such as Arkansas, Nebraska, etc. I also have information on them. Their names were James & Mary Martin. There was a flag on James' grave where he was marked as having been in the Revolutionary War. They are neither mentioned in this. I was raised by my gm, Alice M. Gordon Snyder, and her daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Samuel Andrew Vogus, we lived at 711 Elk St. until we had to relocate for the building of the new Seventh School, which replaced the Fourth and Ninth Street school. We moved to 150 Grant St. I met Frank L. Dean when gasoline was $.25 per gallon...more or less at Skat on route eight. We were married Dec. 17, 1962 by the Rev. Harry DeVault, pastor of Everybody's Mission which we attended. Frank was raised by foster parents, Edith A. Baker(she was an angel) and her wonderful husband, Leo Lowry Fetterman. About 1942, Frank, his parents, Edith Fetterman's widowed mother, Ida Porter Baker, Edith's sister, Edna Baker Boughner and family which included, Edna's husband, Claude, dau, Delores,(mar. Smoke Rarer) Son, Duane (BO) (mar. Barbara Friggle) and dau Ann(mar George Steiner)moved into the home at 132 Grant Street. (Home purchased from a Mrs. Fogle, her daughter was Bertha Schiffer, who was in the family business of Joseph Schiffer Market located on 13th St, where McDonald's is now). We moved from 132 Grant St., in 2002, to relocate in Jupiter, Fl, to be near our son, Christopher and his family, which at that time consisted of two daughters, but now he has four daughters, Lauren, 17, Ann-Marie, 13, Alison, 3, and four month old Abigail. Frank & Chris were born in the Franklin Hospital, Sugarcreek Twp. Frank, Chris, and I graduated from FHS, 1959,1986, &1958. Chris and Michelle Todd were married at St. Patricks in Franklin, moved to Chamberburg when she was tranferred with VisionQuest, later, returned to her hometown of Joppatown, Md. for a better job, then she was transferred to Fl when she worked for GEFibertech. | Comments: | Hi! You have a terrific site! I came across you on Google while trying to find some information on a grave in the Hebron Cemetary. If you have any ideas how I might get in touch with someone who might know about a grave just inside the cemetary, there is no headstone, however there is a medallion and flag for the Civil War. The grave has been there for quite a while, the ground is overgrown with grass and moss under a big old tree and there are plenty of roots too. I am a member of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, every year we place flowers on the graves of these brave men and women and we would like to know who to honor and possibly replace the headstone.
