| Comments: | My thoughts are with you. We have a little dachsund Lili who we got here in Beijing. She is having disc problems so we are very worried when her back is sore. Your story is so happy. also makes me realize how important it is to stop and pay attention as soon as she is not herself. Difficult here with not so good vetinerary care, they wont give us medication for Lili when she is in pain - just rest and then if she does lose her back leg use then she gets 20 injections in her spine a day for 3 days then more rest. Very stressful and only had to do that once, but her back is not good today and in searching for any advice I came across this site. Can you tell me if she can have aspro that has a buffer with it - we have aspro clear so it fizzes when its dissolved. Can she have prednisone for humans - I dont have any but maybe I can get some from the doctor - I feel if she could have a short course of treatment when she has bad pain we could stop it from getting to the serious lame condition. She is walking and wants to play with other dogs but doesnt want to bend to eat and the fur rises on her back if she stretches so we know its hurting. She also seems a little constipated to me as well.

| Comments: | thank you so much for your nyssa's page....my heart breaks for you right now, after reading your page and then knowing you had to lose her after all. i had to have my unknown-age-cat-we-had-for-10-years-, Bigfoot ( extra toes on the front, missing one back leg,cat) euthanized last year, and i still ache from that parting. you have given me courage to deal with my 6 1/2 year old weenie extraordinaire, oscar, and his back disc problem. he is currently paralyzed, and suffering depression, but i am feeling more positive about his situation, and knowing you dealt with it all, and made something positive come of it ( i.e., the website) helps me. we don't have much money, and what we did have just went out to the vet for the first treatments. surgery is out of the question. i will not leave him anymore at the vet, cause he thought we left him and didn't love him. he's upset at me right now, and i am learning how to deal with that and change diapers, etc....i will take your suggestions and go with it!!! thanks so much...please pray for us! |

| Comments: | my lhaso apso ginger just had surgery wed 10/8 for a ruptered disc in her back and cannot use her back legs. I panicked at first but there was never any doubt about doing whatever I could to keep her alive even when the vet said the surgery would cost from $1800 to $2100. What is money for except to spend on what you need or want to have a comfortable life? I saved the money before, I can save it again. Fortunatly, the vet specialist center offered a Credit Care card account and I qualified for an amount that covered all her surgery cost with enough balance leftover to cover more office visits. When I adopted my dogs I took on a responsibilty for their health and well-being. Inconvenience is not an excuse. Thank you for the website and info, I feel much better about ginger's future however it turns out. |

To make matters worse, she only has 3 legs. when she was born she was the runt so her mother tried to kill her. I have been looking into MSM for her but I am not sure of the road to take. I take MSM on a daily basis and would love it if I could put a little in her food everyday for prevention. If you could advise me on this, based on your own experience, that would be great. She is 4 years old, her back right leg is missing, she weighs 11 pounds, and she looks just like your baby. :) Thanks! |

| Comments: | I want to thank you for visiting my website and leaving the link to yours. I just finished reading the horrible ordeal poor little Nyssa went through. She is such a cutie! I'm glad she's doing good now and she looks so sweet in her nice cart.
My Buffy was in the hospital a year ago at Christmas and was close to death from a pancreatitis attack, so I know what it is to have to nurse and care for a critically ill pet. Buffy has been through many physical problems. She's had anal gland removal, double cataract surgery, glaucoma, pancreatitis, liver damage and most recently she had one eye removed. She's a trooper and a fighter like your Nyssa is. I do believe Buffy fought to live because of my daily visits to her in ICU. She knew I was pulling for her. I prayed to God to please give me my Buffy back and that I would do everything to be a better Mom and nurse her back to health. It's all I wanted for Christmas. She came home just two days before the holiday. I got my wish! I think dogs with special needs are here to teach us some valuable lessons. I am a better person because Buffy is in my life as I'm sure you are because of Nyssa. We never take them for granted and each day is special. partially down in hind legs. She cried while reading Nyssa's story, but, I think she feels better now. I go to a special ist on Mon. to see if it is permanent or maybe I will heal. thank you so much for sharing your experience with Nyssa and helping us learn a few tricks! My story with MElina is a little different, for she has a back leg paralysis caused by the francture of a vertebra when she was run over by a truck about 2 months ago. Unfortunately being a stray dog she was picked up by the city pound and I heard about the accident ony 2 days later, so by the time I rushed her to the vet there was nothing we could do to repair it. I went trough all the negative vets wanting to put her to sleep and finally met one who agreed to build her a cart. It's amazing how little experience people have down here on this! At fist everything seemd ok. The problem is that she has developed scars in her groins (under her legs) which is the area by which the cart is attached to her. Basically, her back legs are "hung" from a vertical metal rod that allows her body to stand in the normal 4-legged position, but I'm guessing the weight of her legs is making the suspenders (made of rope and covered in plastic) hurt the inner side of her legs. I hope you can understand. I have tried recovering them in fleece but still they seem harsh on her delicate skin. I am trying to design some kind og short or saddle to help "spread out" the weight of her back part so it won't be too much strain on her groins. Do you have any suggestions? | Comments: | Cain is a semi-minature dachshund with a new spinal injury, (about 4 weeks post surgery now). Cain is very frustrated and confused by his new condition as is his "brother" Doc (they are not from the same litter). Today 8/24/01 we are searching the web for our cart, we are thinking of going with a Doggone Wheels cart. It has been very helpful to read about everybody elses stories, we sometimes think we are the only ones in the world this is happening too.

blessed with three wonderful little Dachshunds (Gretta, Ollie and Johannes). Gretta had a disc episode when she was five (she's ten now) and responded well to prednisone. My boy Johannes has just been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and is in considerable pain. We started him on etogisic although this does not appear to be handling the pain. After reading your story (with the help of NYSSA) I am going to ask the vet to start him on prednisone. The etogisic works after it takes effect but in the morning he can barely move and is in much pain. We humans would do anything to avoid being paralyzed although we are so superficial and attach so much importance on looks and all that. If Johannes cannot live without pain I would rather see him without the use of his rear legs and get a cart like NYSSA's. I hope we can avoid that but NYSSA sure looks happy. AGain, thanks much for the story and give that little girl a pat on the head from me and my little furbabys |

i've been searching for info on paralysis of a different situation. my 3 yr old sphynx cat had an embolic episode less than a week ago.. the results ( at this point) is paralysis of the hind legs BUT he is alive and he is home with me under vet care and tonz of TLC. i have not able to find any thing on the net similiar to my situation... i dont think most cats survive this or get this far, i'm not sure what to expect next.. it is a waiting game one leg looks very bad and is "scabbing" up; the other looks ok so far in my search i came upon your website and totally related to everything you'd been thru and felt ... i thank you for that most people, and most doctors would have had my baby down that 1st night... but at this point that is not an option do you know of any one with cat stories? is seems survival rate for sickly cats is less than dogs anyway, thank you for your inspiration and i hope Nyssa is doing well!!! |

help with my beagle cross back problems.It is a wonderful story and now i know i am not the only person who cares!
