I used to visit Rosehill Cemetery often during my years in Macon. It is a wonderful and truly peaceful place to walk your dog and meditate. The Duane Allman grave is located in a particularly pretty and shady section of this sprawling graveyard. Almost every day there was someone visiting his and Berry Oakley's grave. Elizabeth Reed, subject of "In memory of Elizabeth Reed" is also buried in Rosehill Cemetery. That grave is harder to find as it is pretty plain in design.

Saw you with your mighty band at the Fillmore East on 3/12/71 when you recorded that classic live album and opened for the equally amazing Johnny Winter and I never looked back. Thanks for some of the greatest slidin' and music I've ever heard and I still listen to you regularly. It keeps me honest, strong and happy. God bless you, Duane and I hope to see you play again when I get there. Give our love to Berry and all the others we miss who went home early. SKYDOG FOREVER!!!

Let's not forget how special Duane was. He was a self made man, a unique guitar and musical talent that only comes around maybe every 100 years. He had it all. He quit school in the 9th grade because he had the fever.....the music fever bug in him. He was probably the most intense musician that ever was. Just listen to his playing. Listen to the Allman Brothers Band and how he coaxed the best talent out of his band mates to create the most amazing rock/blues/fusion sound there ever was. He was a true visionary. They just didn't make songs (the allman brothers band), they created improvisional eclectic melodies that were so beautiful in their complexity. So, rock on Duane. I love you forever. I've been listening to you play now for 35 years and the music will never stop.

I pay my respects to the man and the legend. You were gone before I knew you, yet feel your presence. Your talent, dedication and innovation to your craft made you a one of a kind. I continue to look for a new Duane Allman but why bother, the old one is still the best. Duane, I've paid my respects to you and Berry in words and in person, my only hope is that in that world on the other side you still are pouring your being into your music and that I'll get to hear it.

The first time I heard Fillmore East, it just went by me. It was more music than I'd ever heard, all on one album. I kept it in my car's tape player for two week straight. It took a few times through to comprehend the heart, soul and beauty of Duane's artistry. Every note had all the meaning it could carry but, flowed so freely. I can think of no one before or since that took slide guitar to where he could go, seemingly without effort. Even though he's been gone for so long, hearing his recordings is still a soaring experince. Duane was the real free bird.

Was there any guitar solo that seized your soul like Staresboro Blues, any guitar solo so soar as Mountain Jam, any guitar solo that reflected so accurately a dream as
Dreams? Without questain the greatest rock guitarist who ever lived. But to say he is missed is not really accurate, with every solo, you felt a friiend was greeting you, and because he is not here you feel a friend can greet you no more.

What we do yo know nothing more can be said, other than the joy you gave to so many. What we do not know - what we missed - what you would have given us - is our terrible grief. The songs we never heard, the solos never played, the corroborations that never were. But the worst grief is knowing you were never there - are not there now - for those who knew you. Yet to be bitter would betray that which you gave us
