I grew up a sheltered kid in Minnesota in the 1970s. My parents moved to Escondido California in 1979. I made friends with a neighbor kid Bill Faulkner. I remember sitting in his bedroom on a rainy day and Bill played HEY JOE and Id never heard it up to that point in my life. Like I said, Id been a sheltered kid. 1968 - Gulfstream Park - Hallandale, Fl.
I watched in total amazement as Jimi was playing and broke what I think was the bottom e-string (Fender 'spender) on His guitar - He apparently kept a spare - coiled and hanging from his ear - which He (while continuing to play) pulled from His ear (the string uncoiled when it came off His ear) and proceded to feed it through the bridge, up the neck and into the key and tuned it as He continued to play. He never missed a beat. As a reality check - I turned to the girl next to me and asked her if she had just seen what I had just seen. She confirmed the fact that Jimi had just replaced this one 'spender in what could not have been no more than two seconds. Another time - Miami Beach Convention Center Jimi walks out on stage and everyone jumps from their seats and rushes to the front to get closer. He steps to the microphone and says "When you people decide to return to your seats and stop acting like a bunch of animals I'll come back out and play my music." He then went backstage for about 45 minutes and when He came back out to play - you know nobody moved. I will be listening to "Electric Ladyland" today on my ride home from work.
