You, sir, are a music man never to be forgotten. Thank you for leaving a delightful trail of musical blues for generations to discover. Your humor, your heart and your kindness was clear: your words weren't always so clear but we get the idea. It's all good!!!

John Hurt gentle soul musician extrordanaire. He is my inspiration for playing the guitar. In an age of enormous egos and disgusting displays of self promotion he has become
my role model of humility in musicianship. What a wonderful human being.

since I began my guitar journey 40 years ago, I always wanted to have a right hand like MJ Hurt....irinically, last year I viewed John Jackson's video. Then I attended Archie Edwards Open Jam and played where MJ Hurt is well respected....a great thrill for me. Thank you John Hurt.

God Bless you, and John Jackson

well...I can not express my words properly...believe me you are the first thought each time i take my guitar to relax for a few minutes each day for more than a decade by now...your style is practically identical with "playing guitar" to me...you should be known by heart to anyone who loves music which style whatever...wrong thoughts and bad moods are wiped out immediately I listen to you. I do not know of any other musician who has this magical effect.

I discovered MJH's music a few years ago when I first developed an interest in country blues. I was blown away by his picking style, gentle voice, and his syncopated rhythm. I was fortunate enough to have found his gravesite in Avalon on a recent road trip with a buddy of mine. The graveyard was nothing more than an overgrown swath of land cut into a forest at the end of miles of a dirt county road. That experience, and that trip was truly inspiring. Upon reaching the area of Avalon, I was amazed at its remoteness from populated areas and how lucky we are that MJH and his music was discovered, if only later in his life.

MJH is, for me, one of the most extraordinary musicians in all of history. I've been a history teacher in East L.A. for 30 years. I play his three-finger style for my students and they like it alot. Since I live in So. Cal. and surf and have a completely different life than John had (although where I work and what I do makes me no stranger to hard work), I've taken some of his songs and changed the lyrics to fit my life. I've learned Dylan, Reverend Davis, and a little Lightnin', but whenever I just start to play around aimlessly on the Guild (I bought that brand because it's what John played) I always play John's style. Sometimes I'm sad because I couldn't meet him in this life. But I'm happy because part of his spirit lives in me. By the way, Homespun Tapes and Stephan Grossman's Guitar Workshop sell dvds that are very good instructional tools for learning MJH. I wish they had been available 30 years ago when I was ruining vinyl and needles trying to pick up the notes to his tunes.

Late in my life I found a hero in the person of Mississippi John Hurt.By all accounts it appears he was a very gentle soul. His guitar style was so complete that no other accompaniment was needed to back his vocals. It was almost as if two people were playing.Full of rhythm and grace, alternating bass thumb with leads flying off the bass.Simply masterful. Now at the age of 61 I aspire to learn to play as much in that style as my time will allow. His work inspires and endures.

I have been listening to this great American artist since 1971. I actually live in the county (Lorain, Ohio) where he did the classic Vanguard alblum recording at Oberlin College. I was only 12 years old at that time ( I think this was 1966). It is unfortunate that most people do not know or have heard of him. He is in a class of his own and only recognized by other creators and explorers of sophisticated but isolated American music. If you are taking guitar lessons play a few tracks for your guitar instructor, and watch the look on his/her face.

I bought a record of various blues artists and hearing his guitar playing and voice made me take up the guitar at age 55. He became my inspiration and standard immediately. He transcended regions, ages, races, temperaments, and time with what he did. Thanks, Mike

As a kid in Southern California, I went to the record store and looked through the dollor record bins, found Johns record with a picture of him with that great big smile. I bought it, and yea, I got hooked big time. I went out and bought my first guitar and spent god knows how many nights and years trying to figure out that right thumb, well, I got it, learned it and Ramblin jack Elliott has me open up for him from time to time, just to pick a few of johns tunes. jack gave me an autorgraphed black and white of John and I take it with me to most every gig I play. John will always be a kindred spirit to me. I sure wish I could of seen him play live. Ill look for ya John when I get to heaven, sittin on some porch picken and a grinnin. Thanks John I learned most of it from you.
