The best country blues music I have ever heard. Some of the best music I've ever come across. I wish there were musicians like that around today!

Skip James' astonishingly beautiful singing and subtle, intricate guitar- and piano-playing are loved by almost everyone who hears them. But the scope of the music for which he his now famous has been unjustifiably reduced to include only his early recordings. Fans of "country-blues" tend to note that the skills of many great "country-bluesmen" who were recorded in the 20s and 30s were usually in decline by the time these musicians were "rediscovered" in the 60s. In Skip James' case, this accusation is ridiculous. The myth of Skip James' musical "decline" is even propagated by his obnoxious biographer (the author of "I'd Rather Be The Devil"). I beg all those who read this memorial not to ignore James' later recordings. The extant recordings from the latter days of James' career--which include many beautiful live-performances--are, for the most part, absolutely astounding. Some, in my opinion, are the equal of his best early works.

I hope the afterlife is everything you'd hoped it'd be and so much better. Despite the pains of life, may there be some rest in all these years since you've moved on from this place.
