First heard about Minnie from Maria Muldahr when she was in the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Maria and her husband Geoff did a modified version of Minnie and Kansas Joe. Actually, Muldahr saw his version more Louis Armstrong than Joe, but the Muldahrs educated us to Memphis Minnie's importance. As Minnie's records were reissued, her greatest was appreciated by more blues lovers. She was tough, according to her contemporaries. Roosevelt Sykes said if she didn't like a sideman's performance, she'd leave her place on stage and hit them "upside the head" with the neck of her guitar. She was obviously a dominant alpha female, since she sang and played lead while her husbands played rhythm and sang backup. Memphis Minnie's greatness lives on! | |
