Fred,it was a pleasure and an honor to be your harpman for a while on your SF Bay Area tour in April 1968 for Chris Strachwitz. Your telling me that I reminded you of Johnny Woods, your friend and harmonica player back home,is still the greatest compliment ever paid me by any musician. I'd heard you on record and could play right along with you, which you liked. Yes,Sir,Mr.McDowell,we sure enough did "Shake 'Em On Down". Love and respect,Brian Voorheis.

Fred McDowell is a corner stone from Delta Blues, every moan and slide take you back with him and you can almost picture him sitting on a chair playing his blues. His music is so inviting even if you've never listened to blues before, it really grabs your full attention.

i found this interesting artical on-line .
"Raitt hasn't simply been singing the blues, she says By LARRY WIDEN Special to the Journal Sentinel Posted: Oct. 31, 2005 Despite her association with the genre, nine-time Grammy winner Bonnie Raitt doesn't like to be called a blues singer Q. Speaking of recognition, you bought a headstone for Mississippi Fred McDowell's grave in Como, Mississippi. A. I did. There are so many of the original Delta singers whose graves are unmarked, and that bothers me. Fred's music was very inspiring to me, and I wanted to do it. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=367030&format=print"

"Mississippi" Fred Mcdowell is one of the great American slide-guitarists. His intricately percussive guitar-style and powerful singing are immediately recognizable and beloved by all who know his music. It is likely that every guitarist who has ever heard Mr. Mcdowell's recordings has attempted to imitate his playing. It is equally likely that almost all have failed in this respect.
