I called Restvale, because I have a cousin and an uncle buried there, and I had heard Burr Oaks & Restvale were connected. Upon calling Restvale I was told they are not. I pray that Restvale Cemetary officials maintain integrity in its dealings with the deceased and their families. I have several family members buried in Restvale Cemetary. Two brothers, aunts and uncles. Both my parents, were placed in their care, my dad, William Porter, in August 1984, and my mom, Edna Porter in March 2006. I have visited their grave sites many times over the years and have have never noticed anything but a clean area and cut grass. The staff, both inside the office as well as outside on the grounds have always been helpful and professional. I feel at peace knowing my family members are too. | |

My brother Anthony Leon Crump, was buried in Restvale Cemetary on November 1960 After looking at the news regarding the bodies that was moved and distrubed from Burr Oak Cemetery, their final resting place, that really and truly hit home for me and my family. The mere thought of those people that has hurt so may families, disposing of bodies in such a unhumane way. Just checking up on Restvale as my mother Ione Davis is buried there. There has been a great deal of news lately regarding unauthorized opening of graves and inappropriate and gross disposal of bodies. Although my mother's grave is not marked, it is my hope that her body is still in the site she was buried in. Today I visited the grave of my father 32 years after his death and realized I've missed him more than the world could ever know. Restvale Cemetery is in Alsip, IL. It was featured in March of 2007 on the local Chicago PBS station, WTTW, in a feature on the Southwest Suburbs.
Incidently, Muddy Waters' real name, McKinley Morganfield should be listed as that is what is on the headstone. Muddy lived in Westmont, IL, a western suburb of Chicago, where a street has been named after him. (Note: The "About Restvale Cemetery" link goes to a page on graveyards.com. DBG) | |

I remember many Memorial Days being spent at Restvale. As early as 1960, I remember be part of funeral processions to bring someone to their final resting place. I have witnessed this cemetery expand and improve. When we first started coming here, our extended family could easily fill up 10 or 12 cars. There would be so many children; it seemed like a family reunion. We would visit each grave and perform the same ritual of turning and molding the dirt. They would outline the grave and loosen the dirt on the grave and pack it until it looked like a small hill or mound. Why they did that, I never knew. So many of my family and friends are buried here and here is where I want to be buried. My mom & Dad are here; my sisters, brother, grandmother; aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. I don't think I will be afraid to go to sleep surrounded by them. | |
