Valerie was a friend of mine. A good friend, who happened to sing the Blues real real well, like no other. She had such heart and soul and her generosity was boundless. I'd go to every show I could just to hear her sing. She'd see me in the crowd and introduce me to eveyone. It leave me giddy; what kind of friend does that? Valerie, I miss you, I miss your music.

I used to go to Kingston Mines often in the late 80's. I heard Valerie there several times. The way she belted out the Blues was magic. I left Chicago in 89...and I missed the Blues that I had begun to take for granted. When I would go to clubs in other cities, I was shocked at the jazz that they called blues. There was so much energy and raw grit in the Chicago Blues sceen. Valerie's voice was so other worldly it is no wonder that she left this plane. When we are lucky enough to see that caliber of a performance, we should embrace it. I am thankful I had the opportunity to be in the presence of a great one.

COMMENTS

I was deeply influenced by Valerie and her soul....my name is Angel Travis. I met her when I was 9 years old....she let me come up and sing with her band...after my dad taught me some songs on the street corner of the Jolly Roger in Seattle.

Because of that experience I have been following my dream of singing ever since. Finally I am releasing an album with Universal records on September 26th..."The Woman in Me"...though it is not the blues...my love for roots...is ever present within me...and I still sing her songs with my local blues guys in LA.

I certainly know she is in God's hands....and I am thankful to have met her...sincerely....thank you Valerie!

Yours,
Angel Travis

I first saw Valerie at a club called Tramps in NYC during the New Music Seminar in the early 90's. She blew the roof off the place and I was jumping with joy.
I got her album Life In The Big City and spent years looking for new material before finding that she had passed on. Her music continues to fill me with the joy i felt that night so long ago. Rest Peacefully Sweet Lady

Found "Million Dollar Secret" LP in a store in Hong Kong ...our little thursday night blues group really loved her music. Then I was visiting Chicago on business and got so lucky to see her live at a small club ... this must have been less than a year before her earthly end. What a loss! Anyway, I still do a live version of "Million dollar secret" at gigs ....one of the few covers I would ever do! So her music and name lives on! Thanks Valerie.
