June,1974,Toronto Islands,Canada,Mariposa folk fstival I heard the sound carry'd on the wind,I could hear him before I could see him. I started walking in the direction of the sound, away from the stages and crowds and craft booths. There under a tree, playin in the fine June breeze, wearing a powder blue stetson hat with dark blue feather hat band, light blue shirt with a valour country string tie, blue sharkskin suit, tourqoise cowboy boots playing a dobro spray painted royal blue, singing with a voice that was the hand of God to my soul.
It was just him&me when he finished his song and looked up.He saw I had a guitar and asked what I liked to play. I told him I wished I could play like You. He asked if I had "one of these", holding his slide bearing finger in the air. When i reached in my pocket and pulled out a glass slide he started to laugh, then asked what my guitar was tuned to,it was an ol japanese beater tuned already in vestapol, now he really began to laugh . He sat me down and explained how to hit the bass notes alternating in rhythum while I slid the slide on the treble strings from down at the 12th fret dots up to the 3rd fret dots then hitting the 5th&7th fret dots getting a melody and rhythum at the same time, then he explained ,you tell your story! I've been trying to get it right ever since but I always tell my story! GOD BLESS BUKKA WHITE(I know why he was so loved by all)

I first saw B. White on "Devil Got My Woman," film footage recorded in the 1960s. Amazing rhythm player. Later listened to his early work and his fantastic singing. What a guy. Grateful to know that people are still discovering him.

Bukka White was a kind man, and a true artist in his music. He met every human being as an individual, and played and sang in his own style. He never let people turn him in to a clown or a relic, which was the fate of many of his contemporaries in the 60's. My life is much better to this day for having known him.

Booker T. Washington White is one of the greatest singers and guitarists in the history of recorded American music. He is best known for his "dance" music, in which his powerful voice is accompanied by a distinctive guitar style that's heavy and percussive but also lyrical and subtle. He also played some blues of a gentler style and some gospel songs, the extant recordings of which prove he was versatile and brilliant in many styles of singing and playing. Like few other recorded "bluesmen," his guitar-playing is equally exquisite both with and without a slide. Even as so many of his great musical contemporaries are forgotten, it is likely that "Bukka" White will continue to be considered one of the great American singers and guitarists of the twentieth century.
