Sonny Boy Williamson was the brother of my late maternal grandfather. I am a member of Blairs Chapel CME Church where he is buried and was a teenager when a highway marker was dedicated in his memory in Jackson, TN. An annual blues fest known as the "Shannon Street Blues Fest" was initiated in 1992 in downtown Jackson in memory of Sonny Boy, my great-uncle. This event allows current blues artists to perform while keeping sacred the music of Sonny Boy and others like him. My family especially my grandfather were recognized at this event and for the first time Sonny Boy began to receive the recognition that he was long overdue. He is still remembered as a legend and Jackson is proud to be the place of his birth. I finally had a chance to hear his music and enjoyed the harmonica melody. My family is proud to claim John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson as part of our legacy. | |
