Only through your recipe did I first make a piece of

What does it content ?

Comments:I'm not a Science nor an Orchestra teacher, but History. The origins seems to spark interest in my students when it is unsual, contradictory to belief, or of something common. I understand that a type of soap made from residue in beehives was used as a sealant in the making of sting instruments. The famous Stradivarius is believed to have used this recipe. Can you elaborate?

Or is hot process the only way to make liquid soap the first time around? Please refer me to a book of yours if there is one that explains liquid blender soap.

Comments:Hi, Elaine.

I've been reading this and other websites ans plan to make soap on a small scale and then use this knowledge to help others in 3rd world countries to start small businesses and raise their levels of income.

However, in order to maximise productivity and minimise startup costs, I have 2 particular questions.

1. What is the density of the finished product?
I suspect that this will be determined by the oil/fat used and the curing/drying time. However, it will help me determine the dimensions of the soap moulds. N.B. based on information gleaned from the web, I suspect that it falls in the range 880 to 980 grammes per litre. Or about 0.6 oz per cubic inch.

2. By how much will the water temperature rise when the NaHO is added?
There appears to be conflicting instruction with regard to the use of ice or preventing the lye becoming lumpy. And yes I know that the ambient temperature is important.

By the way, I have been inspired to start on this venture and even now am collecting the equipment to start my first batch.

Comments:One of the best soap books I have seen for beginners.thank you ELaine White, for this most useful book. I was or originally exposed to basics of soapmaking, as child of 6 , in fall of year,1952, when the hogs were slaughtered and some of the resulting fat, melted, use to make a scent-less soap.Today.now we h ave many other oils, and E.O to us e and combine with or replace some of your oils or fats.

And thank goodnesss, many Essential or Fragrance oils are now availabe,as well as herbs and many other ingredients to make our soaps more emmolient, like using shea butter.
Thank You ELaine!!!

Comments:I was SO-O pleased to discover your site! I just started making soaps four months ago and it is addictive! I started with a pioneer soap recipe and just went from there! 6 cups melted beef or lamb tallow or olive oil or
Canola or Sunflower oil
6 cups cold water
1 cup lye
Temp: between 125 and 135 F
This traces in about 30 minutes and you can add your essential oils, oatmeal, whatever you want to the mixture. Cure for at least 5 weeks. I've even substituted vodka or alcool for the water and blended in some fresh botanicals like cucumber or watermelon!
