Enjoyed your site. I was wondering if you could give me some info on what a 1961 BMW motorcycle would be worth? It's in fair condition and was running about 3 years ago.Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

But this 1 is from Australia.
Had previously owned a '78 750 Triumph Tiger.
Dream bike to ride, shame I had to get rid of it.
Miss it still on the hot aussie summer days.

Ride with the wind in your hair, and the devil on your back!!!

P.S. Love the site.

Comments:Elaine and Vech:

Thanks for a wonderful website. I have communicated with
Vech about parts, then somehow stumbled into your R50 information and website. How fabulous you two are! Best wishes in everything for you both.

Is there a page on your site of pics of women riders and their rides? I looked but didn't find one. When I started riding, long long ago, I met very few women riders. It is so wonderful these days to see women everywhere riding, wrenching, and having their share of the fun!

When I was Vice President of San Francisco Motorcycle Club I was the first woman officer in the, at that time, ninety year history of the club, and the only woman who rode a motorcycle, instead of packing on back of one, in the club. Women were not excluded from membership by the rules, but there were just none who had their own motorcycles. I sometimes felt alone, and like a freak, as the only woman riding at events, and gatherings. There were even riders join up with our group on the road, then at a stop discover one of us was female, and then refuse to ride with our group any further, saying "I don't ride with women."

In the history archives of SFMC I found pictures of many women who rode in past generations. Many wonderful motorcyclists have encouraged and assisted me to keep a motorcycle running and I am very grateful to them.

Thanks for improving my day with your story, photos, etc. You are a wonderful role model for young women everywhere who dream of having their own motorcycle, and Vech is proof that a real man can appreciate sharing life with a real woman who also rides! More and more of that is happening... there -is- hope for the next generations of women riders to
have a chance to share the enjoyment.

Life is so very good, my sixteen year old twin sons have been raised by me, and have learned to love motorcycles like I do. Hans will be getting the R90S when he gets his license, and Nils will get the R75/6. It will be a dream come true for me to be able to ride with my sons on our own motorcycles. And we will no doubt be coming to Vech to help us find the parts to keep our wonderful old airheads running! Both of my sons have been learning to work on the airheads already, and Hans thinks he would like to go to a motorcycle school to learn to be a professional, but also wants to go to college to learn about computers. Either way he has gained a love of airheads from having a mom who rides. If you do a photo page, let us know and I will get a family pic together to send to you.

I rode it in the 1990's took it to Ireland all over the west coast. I took it apart in late '90's and restored it.
Took me 7 years...but the job was done right..No corners cut.
Took the bike to Normandy last year for D Day anniversary.
Parked the bike next to my mate's V max on the camp site at Ste Mere Eglise.
People were leaning on the v max as they admired the Beemer.

Job done

I'm taking the bike to the Dragon Rally in North wales this Feb...unless I take the Ural 650 ( another story !)

He had sold his house and bought a motorcycle. He is 44 years old, has long red hair and lots of tattoos. Can you and your motorcycle club help find him? Mindy lives in Florida and is on probation and can not travel. She is raising her 3 younger siblings and they all want to know if their father made it though the hurricane. He sometimes stayed at the Salvation Army. There is a group of us searching the internet for him and I thought your motorcycle club could help. Thanks.

There is some Origami on the site as well, for the rainy days. Like the white Beemer though. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Comments:I missed a chance to meet you guys at Mid-Ohio because my wife gave me so much .... about making the trip (2 1/2 hours). We were going to trailer a 1952 Zundapp KS601 to "Ride'em, don't Hide'em." Ever since my youngest brother was killed on his R51/2 back in 1967, she has refused to ride with me, and resisted my every effort to get out and ride. I restored a 1954 Victoria Bergmeister especially for her the year before my younger brother was killed, and ended up selling it off.

My question is, how do I get her to rethink this issue? We would not have gotten married if I hadn't been riding a motorcycle because I would not have been able to go see her. I currently own a 1969 BMW R60US with a recently installed rebuilt wide bench, an old no-name fiberglass faring, and a sound "original" motor with rebult crank and standard bore. She could handle this bike quite easily, leaving me to ride the stiffer, stronger 1952 Zundapp KS601 that is my pride and joy. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i just wanted to tell you that i love your website. every thing that is good and real about motorcycles and motorcycling. very blue-collar, and that is important to me.

as i said, you will more likely than not be selling me parts in the future. when i get this thing done, i will ride it to mississippi and visit you guys. yeah, that is a threat! ha, ha--i'm sure you hear that all the time.

keep up the good work, and if you ever hear of anyone here in tucson, az who has a BMW thumper, let me know, cuz as far as i know, i'm the only one.

oh yeah, one more thing: in my 20 years of beemer-lovin', i have only known of one women who rode a pre-70 BMW. in my opinion, that's not enough. a woman's place is on a denfield saddle, don't'cha think?

Comments:Nationwide BMW Rider - Priority Service Support Program

Are you a serious, long-distance or commuter motorcyclist? Are you tired up of waiting 2-4 weeks for a service appointment? Need your bike back on the road quicker? Would you pay a little extra for priority service support?

If you answered ‘yes’ to all four questions then this is your call to action! We need your help to start a Nationwide ‘Level 2’ Motorcycle Service Program through BMW Dealers.

The foundation of the idea:
I ride 650 miles per week commuting to work. I’ve had a lot of warranty and non-warranty work in the six months I’ve owned my BMW. I’ve just spent a week driving to work at a cost of an additional 15 hours on the road while waiting for my shaft drive to be replaced.

I spend $1 on maintenance for every 6.6 miles that I ride. I could be earning more money in those lost 15 hours of driving to pay for that maintenance.

I’ve also been utterly frustrated by the inability of BMW dealers to meet the servicing demands of a high-mileage rider, which ends up with the bike being off the road for weeks or riding it in an unsafe condition. We have all “Been There”.

With BMW selling more motorcycles, and Law Enforcement understandably getting ‘Level 1’ priority for maintenance, it looks as if our service appointment wait times will get longer each year unless we get creative.

The Idea:
I would pay $500-$1,000 per year to my dealer, or group of dealers within a 50-mile radius, to subscribe to a ‘Level 2’ Service Program.

I would pay an additional $10-30.00 per hour for labor if they will get my bike into the shop, and then back on the road, quicker.

We can network the dealers into groups, who in turn can pool their resources to meet the demands of the high-mileage rider. We can then introduce a two-tier service technician policy.

Dealers can hire one low-priority tech to take care of tire replacement, dead batteries, brake pad replacement et cetera while freeing up the time of the high-priority techs.

This then leaves the high-priority techs available to attend to Level 2 member’s bikes getting us back on the road.

Technicians would be paid more, say when called in from a rest day, to deal with any service dilemmas/crises.

This program will not be to the detriment of those who can wait for regular service appointments, or choose not to pay any extra. The 2-4 weeks schedule time remains unchanged but might get shorter with this new program.

We’ll actually be creating jobs to accomplish our goal!

Putting It all Together:
My local dealer in Southern California is willing to work with all the nationwide dealers in setting up this pilot program, and I’m willing to coordinate all your names with your dealers.

All you have to do is to register on the website once a database is built.

In doing so, you would be counted as a serious rider willing to consider this proposal. There will be a lot of discussion on a forum where we all have a say in how this pilot program could be run.

It’s our turn to have a voice on what we need. Please feel free to email your creative thoughts or ideas to david@webinsite.net

Regards,

David Anderson

Comments:Hi Elaine - I understand that there is going to be an International Vintage BMW Rally in Ohio this summer during the AMA's Vintage Motorcycle Days (VMDs)event at Mid Ohio Racecourse, as well as BMW being the featured Marque of the Year (Monty)at VMDs. I'm not sure if you are the folks helping put it on or not but your's was the only site that came up under the International Vintage BMW Owners Club.
I'm in the 2 Norton clubs in Ohio. The Norton clubs put on the Monty in 99 & had a great suscess at it. We are staging a Norton National Rally between the Vintage Days & Supper Bike weekends this July, 19th through the 22nd at Whispering Hills Campground near Shreve Ohio. Since a great number of Norton owners also own BMW's, could you please send me any info that you have on the Vintage Beemer Rally & I will post it on our web site. I also have a number of sites that I can send to you that might be helpful if you are doing any of the organization for the event. Our Rally site is at http://www.ohionortonowners.org/
Something to urge your Rally goers that do not intend to camp at the onsite race track campground is that Vintage Days is a huge event with motel & hotel rooms at a premium & booking takes place early, so get them to book as soon as posible. Take care & good luck with your event. Bob

He is finally getting up to speed after several setbacks on the road to recovery. The ankle had a serious infection problem which delayed the surgery a couple of times. Combine that with the fact that a lot of the heel bone disappeared in the accident, and it was looking like the whole thing might have to come off. Anyway, after they finally got to working on it, they put in a bunch of rods, screws and other artificial ingredients so that now it's pretty-much locked in one position.

Of course he's already modified a couple of his bikes for heel shifting. He may never learn.

He hopes to be able to make it to at least one race this fall to show everyone he's still got it. Besides, now that he's reached 70, he gets to race for free.

Comments:Elaine, I LOVE your website !!! Sure wish we had computers way back when... just think of how we BeamerBikers could have all communicated with one another !

So... I'm now 52, but got my first BMW in Germany back in 1972. Had never even learned to drive a car yet. I grew up in Germany, and the public transport system is fabulous, so I took the bus everywhere I needed to go. Came to the States in '69.. wow.. you GOTTA have a car here! Joined the AF in '70 and was stationed back to my hometown in Wiesbaden where I was a medic at the USAF Hops. there. Met my ex-hubby at Wiesbaden Airbase. I was driving around base on a moped.. saw a bunch of choppers (yes, the early '70's, remember those days?) lined up in front of a barracks and stopped to admire. Next thing I knew I was dating this fella that owned a 650 Triumph. He taught me how to drive a "real bike" and I loved it ! I was 22 at the time. A year or so later we got married, and my wedding gift was a "used BMW" we bought off a GI there, complete with Steib sidecar.

It was a '63 R50/2. (Up until recently, it has always just been a "used bike".. I'm beginning to realize that as I have aged, so has my bike. It is no longer merely a used bike, not even a "classic" anymore, but a VINTAGE !
Geeeesh, guess what that makes ME? Heh, heh..)

Anyway, while in Germany, we traded the Triumph for a Norton we bought while visiting England, then hubby traded it for a 750cc BMW. My sis came over for a visit and ended up buying a BMW as well. Needless to say, we had a great time touring all over Europe. Spain, France, Switzerland, Austria, ralleys in Holland, the Elephant Ralley in Germany every year in the winter snows..(sidecar with NO heat back then!)

Boy, what fun we had ! Pigroasts in Heidelberg, outdoor rockconcerts.. belonged to the Bones M.C. as first female FULL member ! Great times, really great times.

AND, many moons later, we all STILL have our bikes !

When we returned to the US in late '72, I also bought a '68 R50/2 in great condition.. as a "backup" or to interchange parts, etc.

Yes, I'm still riding. I've had both my bikes all over the East and South.. to Kentucky and Kansas as well. Never really gave much thought to the "vintage value" of my bikes. Just my toys to ride. Oh, I had to take apart my carburators, clean the heads, and do a lot of that back then, but haven't done it in years now. (I'm an RN now, and that grease under the fingernails just wouldn't go over too well!)

Reading your website has given me new motivation to look at my bike in a new light. It really IS a vintage bike ! Wow.

I'm having it cleaned up now, repainted, and "restored", but not hardly the way you and Vetch would and could. Just don't have the bucks for a job like that, although I'd sure love to be able to do that someday ! As soon as I win the lottery ! But I'll do what I can with what I have, and I might be checking in with you for some stainless steel bolts, etc... a few little items at a time. Who knows, someday I might trade one of the bikes and/or sidecar for a "restoration job" on the one I keep !

So here's to riding, and here's to BMWs !!! The best, as far as I'm concerned. In 30 years of riding, I've never once had a breakdown, no mechanical problems to speak of. Sure can't beat that !

Was excited to find this site, and I'll be keeping watch for the updates ! Perhaps we'll run into each other someday, and perhaps I'll make it down to Sturgis. Sure would enjoy that ! Love your little Gasket Kitty.. give him a rub for me !

Catch ya later!

showroom condition and I intend to keep it that way. My web

Love your web site. I started out riding a mini bike at
age 12 with a 2.5 h.p. engine in 1968. With each trade in
I got a little bit bigger bike. I now have a 700cc Honda
Shadow but sometimes ride my husband's HD custom low rider.

Comments:Elaine : Wonderful page I especially like the selection of
music , really neat. Congrats on your union. I am the owner
of a 1973" R75/5 that I picked up in 76". Needed some work
as it was treated poorly. Did all the restoration myself and
really enjoyed it . I road it all those years since and well
over 100 thousand miles Until last winter when it needed all
new oil seals and a valve job. My third restoration Job,
their was a Triumph in between. You will really love your R
50 no doubt ,and more as time goes by. Just think, twenty
years from now you could be sanding that than again. weeu
About the only bad thing that I can tell you is that if you
do it this long and decide that you want to make a change.
You will take a lot of heat from fellow riding friends. like
. What are you going to do with it ?? You wouldn't sell it
would you ?? Your not going to buy a (brand X)??. Or the
direct approach .. YOU SELL THAT THING YOU AN ASS !!!
Actually I'm looking for a R100RT 83" ish . and I couldn't
part with my little toaster.
Great site. Great bike, cool music. Happy riding ; Ken

Comments:Extremely cool web page 'cuz I love to see women riders;
Vech is a name recognized in several publications I read;
and I had an R60 for a first bike in 1970 (it was a 68
model with earles fork) and later in about 1972 I picked up
a R50S which was a bit of a basket so I overhauled the top
end and the chopped it with the addition of a US model
front fork and some minor fender bobbing (cutting off the
bent areas and smoothing them up a little). Nowadays I
ride an R1100RS around the Western US and also a KLR 650
which is a great lightweight little touring bike. Looking
forward to saying hello if I should see you folks at a
rally or somewhere. Also had an R26 at one point and an
R69s as well....that R51/2 of yours is a real prize!

Comments:Hi, Elaine,

I tried to comment in your guestbook before, but somehow it
didn't work out, I don't know why, so I try again.
Somewhat about a year ago I bought myself a bike, my first
one. I always wanted a BMW or a Harley. It became a BMW!!
Its a '65 R 50. I'm restoring it right now, It's my first
restoring job but I think I'm doing well, I'm in love with
that machine. I'm done with the engine, now I'm busy doing
the bodywork and the painting. It's gonna be a black beauty.
I got a friend who's a BMW parts dealer, so it will work
out fine I think.
Bought the bike for aprox. $ 2.500 (but in guilders of
course)I don't think that's to much money, the bike was
almost complete except for the front wheel and a saddle.
I'm painting it black but than without the white striping
and thinking of making a kind of a low rider from it with
as much as original parts as possible. When the bike is
ready I'll try and send you a picture if you like.
I know it's a womens site but somehow I feel I,m a bit part
of it. ( by the way I wear a pony tail, maybe that makes it
up). Wish you lots of succes with your bike and I really
enjoyed your page !! Greetings from a dutch R 50 fan.

Comments:Good evening from Tampa. You mentioned that you thought no
one would be interested in your web page but that is not so
at all. I found your account of your restoration project
fascinating. Someday when I retire I hope to be able to
restore my old R26 which is in my parents basement in
Seattle. I bought it in 1963 while I was stationed in
Maryland. When I got orders for Germany in 1964 I rode it
home to Seattle. Many riders in my Maryland club said I
would never make it on such a small bike. Little did they
know about BMW reliability.

Enough of my rambling. I will check your page frequently now
that I have found it. I am looking forward to more accounts
of your adventures. It is good to know where I can find a
source of parts and help once I start on my old bike. Thanks
for the great amount of information and insight into your
motorcycle adventure.

Best regards - Richard
