| Comments: | My great, great grandfather, James O'Neill, left a fishing village near Belfast for Sherbrooke, Quebec (or possibly St. Patrice, Quebec. He was born around 1815 and died in Quebec in his 60's. He married Susan Maguire in Quebec (from County Fermanagh) and they had three children born in Canada, James and Mary O'Neill, who never married and Patrick O'Neill (my great grandfather) who emigrated to New Hampshire in the late 1800's and married Mary Ann Quain producing 5 O'Neill boys, all in the service in WWI. I'm looking for where the original James O'Neill was born in Ireland, possibly County Down. Any help would be appreciated |

| Comments: | I have been searching now for a few years with no success for my father Eddie O Neill. All I know about him is that he worked in Holyhead in 1969 building a crane at the docks. He left before I was born. Apparently he already had a wife and 3 daughters.Unfortunately I have never met him and he must be in his late 60's by now. If this sounds familiar to anyone I'd be grateful for any info about the side of my family I've never met. Thanks |

| Comments: | Hi O'Neills out there -
My maternal grandfather - Edward Harrington Jr (Massachusetts), was the son of John Sylvester Harrington, born in New Bedford MA in 1859, the son of Daniel Harrington of Bear Haven, Ireland. Now, what does all this have to do with O'Neills? Well, growing up, my mother and her siblings were told this story in the 1930s by her father as were I and the other grandchildren in the 1950s-60s about a young boy named Timothy O'Neil who lived on a farm with his mother. One day he went down to the well to get a bucket of water fro her and down came a huge bird (or dragon maybe) that swooped him up. He went all around the world on adventures and the line we all remember is: "he never spilled a drop." Sadly, that is all any of us can remember and we've been trying to find out if this Timothy O'Neil story is something our grandmother made up, or if it has its roots in some Irish folk tale / tales. If anyone has any information or has heard this tale told as well - please contact me! Thank you so much. Cheers. |

| Comments: | I have been researching my O'Neal/O'Neill gggrandparents for many years with very little success. This is what I know, but haven't verified so I don't know how accurate it is. I'm researching a John (Owen is his middle name, I think )O'Neal/O'Neill who married a Susannah Keenan in Ireland. They immigrated in the early 1830's with two daughters, Susannah and Mary. They eventually settled in Louisville, KY after having 2 other girls along the way: Eliza Jane was supposedly born in Pennsylvania and Theresa was supposedly born in Ohio. They can be found in the 1850 census of Louisville, KY. The family moved after that to Salem, Indiana where John and Susannah (Keenan) and Theresa are buried. Eliza Jane married William Irvin and migrated south after the Civil War to Louisiana where they lived and died in Lafayette, LA. Theresa married Thomas Howard, Mary married Henry Thompson, and Susannah married a Trisler. That is about what I know as of this date. If anyone out there knows anything about this family, please email me. I would love to make a connection to any distant relative. Thank you......happy researching to all of you O'Neill's. |

| Comments: | My great grandmother was Mary Jane O'Neil, born and baptized in the Catholic Parish of Freshford, Tullaroan County, Kilkenny, Ireland 2 May 1841. Her parents, Patrick and Julia (Delaney) were residing in Lackagrass [or Knocknagrass], a subdivision fo the townland of Courtsland at the time that she was born. Patrick and Julia O'Neil left Ireland circa 1853, coming to Montreal, Canada. Mary would have been about twelve years of age. Coming also were sisters, Catherine, Cecelia and young Julia. A cousin has found the dates of marrige of Patrick & Julia (Delaney} O'Neil [2 Mar. 1840], and the birth and baptism date of Mary and her siblings. Someday, I would like to know the ancestry of all of these people. What I am most interested in at the present, is trying to piece together Mary's life. What was life like in the Parish of Freshford, Tullaroan County, Kilkenny, Ireland, and the subdivision of Courtstown? I know that they had been suffering from the Potato Blight Famine. What were the other crops? Did some families fare better than others? Was it a close-knit community? I write short-stories about each of my ancestors, and want to be as accurate as possible. I appreciate any information that anyone mgiht be able to give. God bless. Isabel Morse Maresh - mareshme@pivot.net. |

| Comments: | I posted the following comments some time ago and wanted to bring it back to the top. Since that time, I have been back to Ireland and have my O'Neill clan back one more generation. I have much info on the family that I would like to share with the remaining family members that I have yet to meet. I am looking for the descendants of James O'Neill who married Mary Mulholland in St. Treas Church, Ballymaguigan, Co. Derry. James and Mary moved to Montreal sometime after their wedding. They had one daughter Mary Elizabeth (Lilly), who married a Patrick Ryan. They had a number of children, Patrick, Thomas, Michael and a daughter Theresa. I would love to locate this family as they are the last of the descendants of Edward O'Neill and Margaret McCormick that are to be located. Edward and Margaret are the parents of James. Please email me. Also if there are any descendants of Thomas O'Neill and Ellen McKenna that are interested in knowing more, I would love to share.

| Comments: | Here is the information my father Robert James O’Neill (b 1927, d 2000) gave me about the O’Neill family. While I believe most of the information is accurate, it is not 100%, and more research needs to be done. However, it may give some of you a starting point if any of the G2 or G3 lineage sounds familiar to any surviving relatives, because the G1 lineage is where a lot of the mystery began. I will also tried to see if my aunt or cousin still has the family tree, because it was rumor to take us all the way back to Ireland. I have also added some childhood stories that I remember or was told. The lineage is done of both the paternal and maternal side.
Paternal Side _____________________________________________________ G1 Michael J O’Neill (lineage County Mayo) married Maude Theresa O’Connor (lineage County Clare and outlined under O’Connor) and lived in Port Arthur, Ontario. Unknown whether they married in Ireland or Canada, but know they were both born in Ireland. Michael J O’Neill was 1 of 8 children. Michael J O’Neill has a brother Patrick and another one named James. The other five remain a mystery. Whereabouts and lineage of all seven siblings also a mystery. So I call them the lost O’Neill tribe of Canada and Ireland. Michael J O’Neill and Maude Theresa O’Connor had at least three children. Albert, Michael Joseph “Joe” O’Neill and Daniel Edward “Ed or Eddie” O’Neill. G2 Lineage of Albert unknown. G2 Daniel Edward O’Neill married and had at least two children with his first wife, both girls – G3 Rebecca and Jean. Jean married and had a daughter G4 Penelope. I remember they came to the house when I was small and Penelope nickname “Penny”, my sister and I played on the swing set. Daniel Edward O’Neill, who remained in Canada, divorced and had another child with a much younger woman. Unknown whether they ever married, but remember my father commenting that he was too old to be having babies when he called the house with his announcement of the upcoming birth. There was never any follow up to the baby communicated to the family that I remember. G2 Michael Joseph “Joe” O’Neill, my grandfather, (born @ 1903 in Canada; deceased 1960) married Mary Anges McCarthy (born in 1907; deceased 1989) in Buffalo, NY and they had 8 children – William (deceased), Robert J (my father – deceased), Paul (deceased), Patricia, Maureen (deceased), James, Shelia, and John (died in infancy). Michael Joseph “Joe” O’Neill remained in Buffalo, NY and worked on the Erie Canal and the railroad prior to his death. G3 William O’Neill (deceased) married Sarah Jane Sullivan nickname Sally and they had two boys, G4 Matthew and Mark. G3 Robert O’Neill (born 1927, deceased 2000) married Maryann Tiffany (born 1930, deceased 1998) and they had five children – G4 Kevin, Kathleen, Shawn Terrance (died in infancy), Colleen and Sean Patrick. G3 Paul O’Neill (deceased) married Shelia Ann Hall nickname “Chickie” and they had 10 children – G4 Paul (deceased), Michael, Donna, Cheryl, Timothy, Maureen, Joseph, Ann Marie, Thomas and Margaret nickname “Peggy”. G3 Patricia O’Neill (rumor to have entire O’Neill ancestry all the way back to Ireland and still lives in North Tonawanda) married Bill Breen, a widower who already had a daughter named Eileen. Patricia and Bill had three children together – G4 Mary Beth, Michael and Patrick. Patricia was Mary Anges McCarthy’s pride and joy, because she entered the convent even though she later withdrew. G3 Maureen O’Neill married Ray Milliman and they had three children – G4 Kelly, Mark and Mike. G3 James O’Neill married Delores and they had no children. However, James did father a child by the name of Patrick with his girlfriend Mary during a separation from Delores. G3 Shelia O’Neill married Dr. Patrick Coseglia (deceased) and they had 11 children – G4 Patrick (rumor to have entire O’Neill ancestry and living somewhere in Indiana), Brian, Mary Eileen, Danny Joe, Frank, Richard, Carmella, Laura, Shelia, Mario and Michelle. Shelia was the first O’Neill to marry a non-Irish catholic and it broke her father’s heart. However, there was some consolation that he was a doctor and catholic. As it turned out, Dr. Pat was the kindest, gentlest man I ever knew. Maternal Side ______________________________________________________ G1 Arthur O’Conner married Cathrine Gorman and are connected to the County Clare. They had at least two children - Maude Theresa O’Connor and Bryan O’Conner. G2 Maude Theresa O’Connor married Michael J O’Neill (lineage County Mayo and children outlined under O’Neill) and they lived in Port Arthur, Ontario. Unknown whether they married in Ireland or Canada, but know they were both born in Ireland. G2 Bryan O’Conner married Elizabeth Counihan and they had 10 children – Mary, Brian, Pierce, Kate, Margaret, Bessie, Hannah, Helen nickname “Nell”, Cornelius and Bridget. G3 No information on Brian, Pierce, Margaret, Bessie or Cornelius O’Conner. Except that one of the grandson from one of the males, Donald O’Connor, later became my brother’s, Sean O’Neill, godfather. Bessie may have married a Fitgerald, because as I very young child I remember visiting her. She was old and feeble sitting in a rocking chair in her living room with a picture of John Fitgerald Kennedy on the wall. She stated, he is kin you know. Truth or wishful thinking, I don’t know – needs more research. G3 Mary O’Conner married Thomas Murphy and had two children – Anna Bridget and John nickname “Buster”. Their son, John (Buster) Murphy did marry and only know that one of John Murphy’s grandsons married and lived on Tomarsue Dr. in Marilla, NY, and he also had children. Their daughter, Anna Bridget Murphy, married Thomas Bouquard and had four children – Thomas, John, Geraldine nickname “Jerry” and Donna. While this lineage needs more research, Geraldine (“Jerry”) Bouquard married Eugene Burke (son of Joe Burke) and the Burke name had been changed from Burkowski. G3 Helen “Nell” O’Connor married Patrick Moynihan and had four children – James, John, Neil and Mary. James and Neil became priests and John never married. Mary Moynihan married Frank Morris and this lineage needs more research. G3 Hannah O’Conner married William Carol and had two children John and Mary Elizabeth. Have no lineage on son, John Carol. Mary Elizabeth Carol married Edgar Nemorie and had two sons – Carol Edgar Nemorie nickname “Mickey” and Patrick Nemorie. G3 Bridget O’Conner married Michael McCarthy (G2 son of Dennis McCarthy and Mary O’Rourke of the County Carey and G3 bother to Nan, Molly, Sarah, Kate, Bridget, Nell, Mary, Margaret, Florence, John, Tade, Michael and Martin McCarthy. Martin McCarthy also had a son named Dennis McCarthy) and had six children – Mary Agnes, Cathleen nickname “Chick”, Elizabeth, Helen nickname “Baby Nell”, and twins Dennis and Ann, who both died in infancy. Bridget O’Conner was my great grandmother, who ran a speakeasy in Buffalo, NY during prohibition. She also paid the way for her niece Annie to come to the United States at the age of 16. Annie had been turned in by one her neighbors for smuggling guns for the IRA. Due to her age, the police said she could either go to jail or leave the country. Annie chose to leave and once in the states she married someone by the name of Powers and had at least one son, Thomas. At the age of 69, some one rang her doorbell and attempted to present her with a plaque for her bravery and loyalty to Ireland. Annie refused stating in her Irish brogue, “Get out of her you bastard, where were you 53 years ago when I needed your help. “ The nerve she use to tell me. Annie always had a love for Ireland, disliked the English and felt betrayed by her countrymen. She never returned to Ireland and passed away in Buffalo, NY. She was definitely a love and I wish I knew who had her plaque, because it would mean so much for me to have it. I also know Annie had two sisters left in Ireland, because we went to visit them and only remember they lived near a greyhound dog track. G4 Mary Anges McCarthy married Michael Joseph O’Neill and had 8 children. Upon examination it looks like Mary Anges McCarthy may have married her first cousin Michael Joseph O’Neill – see O’Neill lineage. May explain why the aunts and uncles used to always talk about the O’Neill curse and I never knew what they meant. G4 Cathleen “Chick” McCarthy married Robert Lauber and had two children – G5 Patty Ann and Robert Jr. nickname Butch. Have no lineage on son, however, do know he married. Patty Ann Lauber married Rich Datondo and know they had at least two sons. G4 Elizabeth McCarthy married Joseph Farwley and they had no children. G4 Helen “Baby Nell” McCarthy married someone by the name of Cudihy and they had no children. Helen later remarried Bud Kamn and they had no children. |

It is a wonderful ancient celtic ring fort. Also their are ruins of Harry Aobharigh O Neills castle in Newtownstewart co tyrone, not much left now but good to see a bit of O Neill history. If you want visit towns with lots of O Neill's then Dungannon and Coalisland Co Tyrone are brilliant. Also the O Neill's were buried at Creggan(think its in Co Armagh but might be Tyrone). You need to investigate if you want to visit. |

| Comments: | I descend from Michael O'Neill/O'Neil 1801-1881 and Hanora O'Neil 1803-1911, born in Kilkenny. They departed Ireland in 1850, arrived in and lived in Canada for about 3 years. They are recorded in the archives of St Phillip RC Church in Richmond Ontario, as is the birth of one of their children, Bridget, born 1851. The O'Neill's left Ireland with Michael jr born 1836, John born 1841, Hanora born 1844 and Eliza born 1846. Bridget and Anna were born in Canada and the family came to the Tug-Hill Plateau of Lewis Co N.Y. where they lived out the rest of their lives. The first child born in the US was Arthur, born 1853 died 1931. He was married to Katherine Moy 1866-1933.
Arthur's first son was Hugh Patrick O'Neil, whose first son was Francis O'Neil whose first son is me, Francis J.O'Neil. I live in Cleveland Ohio. Sometime in the journey thru Canada the Michael dropped the last L from the name. Lore has it that he said I left part of me in Ireland, and will not be whole enough till I go back to get me "L". He spelled it that way thereafter and we do to this day. I've written to 2 people in Tullaroan Kilkenny recently as I think our great great grandfathers were brothers, but to date I've had no response. I'm sure thats where they were from though. I have some other data if anyone cares to correspond regarding O'Neill/ O'Neil's from the 1850's via Richmond/Ottawa Canada, or the bunch who settled in Lewis county New York in the NewBoston, Montague, Pinckney towns or in the village of Carthage New York. Thanks for the effort to put together a site such as this, it will facilitate the gathering of the clan, for sure. Slan' Francis |

| Comments: | I to it seems have a haunting past, just waiting to be researched. My grandfather Patrick J. O'Neill was born on July 18, 1906. Don't know where? I do know that he died on Feburary 25, 1989. I have yet to get a copy of his original SS-application.My grandmother was born on September 21,1909 and died on December 29,1969.Again do not know where she was born either. But if anybody just wants to talk or give me any info in the right direction I would sure appreciate it. When my grandparents both died they both lived in the Bay Area--California, Alameda County. Or just email me! It would be good to hear from another O'Neill in another part of the world! Bye for now. |

Further to a message I posted in April 2004 trying to trace a James O'Neill who went to USA in 1928 I am now very pleased to let you all know that I have traced his "movements" to his death and burial in White Plains New York and I am in touch with one of his step grandchildren. It was not thru this page that I was able to find this info, but it does show that it can be done. Now looking for info of some of his remaining brothers and sisters. Sarah married a Michael Doyle in 1908 Joseph was supposedly in Cashel Co. Kilkenny around 1928 John and Mary. Anyone know of them please? |

| Comments: | Hi guys I have just come back from Rome where I went to the church of San Pietro and saw the grave of "THE ONEILL". for those of you unsure of this title I saw the grave of Hugh Oneill our last true Irish king and clan leader. Now I know I may have upset some of our family with this statement but its true. I just wanted to ask does anyone know the true translation on the grave from latin to English or gaelic. If so please let me know I am running into problems with classical latin, medieval latin and modern latin. I have read considerable amount of books describing what the the grave inscription is meant to be.None of which are correct because there are a considerable amount of letters on the inscription which leads me to the conclusion that it says more than here lies the bones of Hugh Oneill which most books describe. The other point I would like to make although the experience was wondeful and very moving it was also very sad to see such a wonderful revolutionary, general and clan leader buried in Rome and not in his own native soil. I also stated once on this web site that we need a statue or memorial to the Oneills in Tyrone or in Ireland some where because of our family history any thoughts. |

My paternal grandfather was Sydney O'Neil-Learoyd. His mother was Mary Teresa O'Neill(b.Sydney Aus,1878)& his father was F.W.Learoyd(b.Melbourne Aus,1858). Mary's father was Michael O'Neill(b.about 1843-45,Tipperary) Her mother was Margaret Mc Namara(b.about 1854, Co.Clare?) Michael and Margaret supposedly married in Tipperary about 1875, before coming to Australia. Michael& Margaret had a dairy farm in Glebe, near Sydney. Mary(my great-grandma)was the first child of the relationship and was born in Australia. Michael died in Glebe in 1902. Michael's parents apparently were John O'Neill& Johanna Bourke or Byrne. Mary had a brother called Ulick Bourke O'Neill, which would suggest Johanna's surname was Bourke, rather than Byrne. I have yet to find any concrete details for Michael & Margaret. If any one can help, please e-mail me. Oh, before I forget Margaret had a sister Winfred and Michael had a brother named John. It seems that the two O'Neill brothers married the 2 Mc Namara sisters! |

I’m looking for information on my great-grandmother’s family. Catherine Gertrude O'Neill born 2 March 1882 in County Antrim, Ireland, married William Rostron (born 28 June 1872 in Bolton England) married 21 July 1902 in the Parish of Old Kilpatrick, County of Dambarton, Scotland. Her father's name may have been Daniel O'Neil and her mom’s maiden name was Evan or Evans. Catherine and William immigrated to Massachusetts around 1910, then to California. Catherine died 09 May 1958, in West Los Angeles, CA Catherine had a brother James who immigrated to Newport, Rhode Island, and is buried somewhere in Newport. She also had a nephew Peter “Johnny” O'Neill who immigrated to Massachusetts, married Catherine’s daughter Sarah “Sally” E. Rostron, (his first cousin) they moved to California, then he divorced her and returned to Ireland about the 1970’s, where I believe he remarried. Thanks, Debbie |

| Comments: | I am researching Michael O'Neill, born circa 1835-1838 in Valentia Island, Co. Kerry. His parents were John O'Neill & Julia O'Connor. He emigrated to Australia by 1863 as he married Mary Anne Kelly (b. circa 1843) on 5 April 1863 either on the journey or after they arrived in Brisbane. I have found the births of all their children & descendants. Any help on Michael's birth, his parents births, marriage, deaths & that of his siblings & when he emigrated to Queensland, Australia would be appreciated. |

| Comments: | (->Mary Agnes O'Neill, ->Michael O'Neill, ->Jack O'Neill,
->John O'Neill). The O'Neill name recurs very often...other surnames (through marriage, etc.) O'Sullivan, Harrington, O'Shea, Sheehan, Hanley, Murphy. Mom used to say we'd descended from Owen Roe O'Neill - I see his name in these pages. This branch is in the US now, though we have tentative contacts with others in UK (Ireland and England). I've been scouring the Ellis Island records trying to find records of grandparents' emigration - there are so many Michael O'Neills and Mary Sheehans, and I don't know the dates! So - the search continues. |
