Contribution:It was no accident that Steve wasn't always "easy" to "get" -- his integrity (and originality) as an artist and thinker meant he never succumbed to "the way things are usually done." He heard (and "spoke") the silences as eloquently as the best of us use words. I will always remember the small moments, taking a group of us for Korean food in New York, sharing jazz and shnapps, the excitement in his eyes when someone "got it" -- the passion for Dr. Who, whose solutions to problems relied on luck as much as deduction. "Shit happens," he used to say, to explain the "bad stuff." No blame, ever. He created a language and a practice for therapy to never again blame the client, however subtly. I am deeply honored to have known and learned from him. Steve, you will be missed.

Contribution:Reflecting on how to express the impact Steve had on me, two quotes come to my mind.

"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction." (E.F. Schumacher)

"When in doubt, make a fool of yourself. There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth. So what the hell, leap." (Cynthia Heimel)

Before I met Steve I tried hard to be more intelligent and less idiot.
Now I try the other way around.

so thank you Steve for giving my practice a big kick up the backside. I am sorry in a very selfish way that you won't be around to keep kicking me.

Contribution:Dear Steve,

Feel sad every time, I realise you are gone. Your special style, your special personality, your mistery sometimes and your friendship .... through all those and many more characteristics, you awakened the world with some new insights. Probably no-one can do it that simple as you did ... but your example made us curious to always try to make things more simple ... for us, for our friends, for our clients.

You have impacted many lives.

I guess many of us can only dream of contributing to a better world so massively as what you did in 65 years on this globe.

I want to remember your friendship, your personality and especially your focus on simplicity ...

We will try to make our lives and work more simple in honor of you.

Always yours,

Paul

Contribution:Steve, I just got to know your death until yesterday. I shared with my students my image of you in 1998 in New York for the Milton Erickson Foundation's conference. I ran into you in the hall way after you had a debate about the problem talk and solution talk with another panelist. I told you "that was a good job", and "Steve go." You were very happy and smiled at me. That image of your smile began to appear in my brain since yesterday. I appreciate of what you did for us, the world. I believe we return to where we are from. I wish you are in the peaceful end now. Wish pieces also to your dearest partner, Insoo and daughter. Warmest regards, A-hun

Everytime I sat next to him to try and put his clear and concise English into German and repeat in English what the clients were saying I learned so much about solution focus, about therapy, about language, about an attidude of wonderment and curiosity, about the fact that clarity and respect are brothers and not enemies.

There is so much left to learn.

Contribution:Steve,
I probably learned as much from our private contacts than from your teaching. Over the years, those contacts influenced my work probably as much as my life. During this past week, my thoughts were filled more with memories of our social meetings all over Europe then with the Teacher that passed away.
We all have lost the person but we, and futur generations of colleagues, will never loose your ideas.
May your moral values and you anti-guru-position be a lasting guidepost for our SF community.

Insoo, your loss is the most painful and hard. Let the force be with you and may you continue with your atomic-power driven approach to life.

Steve, it was an honor to have known you, thanks.

Contribution:I would like to take this opportunity to let you know how important Solution Focus Brief Therapy (SFBT) has been in my ife. I have taught SFBT in the Walla Walla Master of SocialWork program in Missoula, Montana for the last 5 years, using the Solution Focus book that you, InSoo, wrote along with Peter DeJong. Each time I have taught the class, students have expressed how the fog has been cleared for them and their clients when they are able to focus on solutions.

Even though my health was not good, I felt that I just needed to go to the SFBT conference in Park City, Utah this last November. I have been to a conference with you previously, In Soo, but the Park City conference was the first time I met Steve in person. He seemed very genuine and so very easy to talk to. I loved the conversational way in which he answered questions. He clarified for me that Solution Focus Brief therapy is not a model, but a way of thinking.

I'm sure he will be greatly missed by the number of lives he touched through his wisdom and solution talk. I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to spend quality time with him, and listen to his stories.

My prayers go to you InSoo, and his family.
God Bless,

Thanks Steve (and Insoo) for teaching me and proding me into spreading the SF approach. I will always remember "Problem talk creates problems. Solution talk creates solutions."

Contribution:Thankyou Steve for being so determined to sort through everything that was supposed to work and leaving us with such a clear definition of what usually does. Although you are no longer physically with us, your wise thoughts will always be at our disposal when we need to recall them.

Contribution:To Steve,
I heard the sad news in the first coffee break in a training group. Shocked, I didn't know how to carry on the training. Then, I realized that the best way for me to honor Steve was to keep on doing the work, as good as i possibly could. And I kept hearing Steve's voice from somewhere: "make it more simple". It is so strange that Steve is dead, when what I learned from him is so alive.
