Fort Dodge issued a recall of RabVac 3 TF serial number 873113A rabies vaccine on May 25, 2006 after a vaccinated dog contracted rabies (The Charlotte Observer http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/business/14786163.htm also http://www.dogsadversereactions.com/RabvacRecall.html). According to the recall letter, this batch of vaccine "was released into the veterinary market in November 2004 and expires June 29, 2006." Concerned pet owners can call Fort Dodge at 800-533-8536. This link http://wyovet.uwyo.edu/Diseases_2006.asp takes you to Wyoming's State Vet Lab website, which posted the recall letter--click on the appropriate icon.

Two world-renowned giants of veterinary vaccine research -- Dr. W. Jean Dodds of Hemopet and Co-Trustee of The Rabies Challenge Fund and Dr. Ronald Schultz of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine -- have volunteered their time to ensure that critical 5 and 7 year rabies challenge studies are conducted in the United States. The studies will be financed by The Rabies Challenge Fund Charitable Trust, a tax-exemption organization founded by Maine pet vaccine disclosure advocate Kris L. Christine in 2005, and will be performed by Dr. Schultz at the University of Wisconsin. The University has waived its 48% overhead fee for the studies.
The concurrent challenge studies will determine the duration of immunity conveyed by the canine rabies vaccine, with the goal of extending the state-mandated interval for boosters to 5, and then to 7 years. According to Dr. Dodds, “This is one of the most important projects in veterinary medicine. It will benefit all dogs by providing evidence that protection from rabies vaccination lasts at least 5 years, thereby avoiding unnecessary revaccination with its attendant risk of debilitating adverse reactions. "

Scientific data indicate that vaccinating dogs against rabies every three years, as most states require, is unnecessary. Studies have shown the duration of protective immunity as measured by serum antibody titers against rabies virus to persist for seven years post-vaccination, and results of a 1992 French challenge study led by Michel Aubert demonstrated dogs were immune to rabies five years after vaccination. Researchers believe the rabies vaccine causes the most and worst adverse reactions in animals and concur that it should not be given more often than necessary to maintain immunity. Adverse reactions to rabies vaccination can include autoimmune diseases affecting the thyroid, joints, blood, eyes, skin, kidney, liver, bowel and central nervous system; anaphylactic shock; aggression; seizures; epilepsy; and fibrosarcomas at injection sites.

Dr. Schultz states that “[s]howing that a vaccine for rabies can provide 5 or preferably 7 years of immunity would have great significance not only in controlling rabies but more importantly in reducing the adverse vaccine reactions that can occur in dogs and cats after vaccination."

I have fallen in love with this big boy. You have gorgeous dogs and I am glad to see that there are breeders out that do not always dock the ears. I think that these dogs look so much better natural.
I hope that you keep up the good work of making the Dane a stonger and more substanially healthy bread. Thank you.

I know the last thing I read is that akc does not recognize merles as a true dane. I need some input. e-mail me if you have some and would like to share.

Comments:I really liked your site. My husband and I have a 15 week harlequin female and a 8 month tan male. We're trying to find out what the term for a tan dane is. We have a 3 yr. old son and a 6 mo. old daughter and I have never seen a more gentle dog than this. The kids absolutely love them!!! Thanks for all the great info.

Comments:Thanks for the information, I was thinking of having my new 18wk old "fawniquin" puppy's ears cropped, but now I have changed my mind. From what your info says she is too old but I was told by the person that I got her from that it would be ok. Thanks for everything, I imagine that she will be as good a GD as everyone is saying.

Thanks.

Comments:I was given your web address in response to a post for a white Great Dane puppy. I have a white deaf female that is 3 and I want to find her a playmate. I also have to Rotties that are 8 and not so interested in playing for long periods of time. I especially want a puppy so we can train it with the signs that we are presently using with our deaf female. I also was more interested in a female, my male Rott is alpha, and seems to be more accepting of females. I read your article on ear cropping and have the same feelings, and have for years. I have had Danes since 1973 and used to think cropping was necessary, I can't believe what I put the dogs through just to make them look good. I hope more breeders start to think the same way. Anyway thanks for your wonderful site and all the good information. Good luck with your dogs.

Comments:Wow, good answer, we (me and the midget) have been PawPrinted for life. We lost our harlequin G. Dane in November, and wow life has been so lonely. We tend to still call him. What an awesome dog i had the pleasure of having in my life for 8.5 years! and he and my midget Wyatt were born on the same day. wow what a connection they had! UNBELIEVABLE. we are in search of a dane, no other dog will do, after Chuck and his 185 lbs of gentle giant, please keep us in mind if someone doesnt like, or can't handle the "big" boys we can. we have a 1/4 and his own room, would love to move him or her in, of course not in Chuck's room but in their very own. and We have our own paw print on our heart that will always be there. Thanks for the forum, and I miss my best friend, in seach of a new, but never a replacement. thanks Julie/Wyatt in Memory of Chuck

Comments:I have a great dane, and would love to have another one when she passes away. A.J. is 6 yrs. old. We bought her as a puppy and will never do that again. I've decided to rescue one would be a better thing. I think it's great there are places like this that help the danes that are not wanted, who could ever look into their eyes and heart and not want them is beyond me, but sadly it happens.

Thankyou,
Jill

Comments:Hello!
My Great Dane's name was Simba. He passed away 3/8/04. He was the most beautiful fawn breed you'd ever seen. His passing was a surprise; totally unexpected. I'm still hurt because we got him when he was 8 weeks old and he was 8 years old when he died. As I'm sure with all of you, your dogs or whatever pet you have and love becomes a part of your family in such a way that their passing hurts deeply. The next dane we get won't replace Simba's paw prints, but he/she will be loved just as much. Kim M.

My 5 yr. old mixed breed girl, Reini, is so happy to have him to play with. Bentley weighed in at 49.1 lbs today, and was called "perfect" by our vet. (We already knew that!) Looking forward to our lifetime of fun together!

Comments:We just had to put our Great Dane "Ernie" to sleep two weeks ago. We adopted him from a breeder in NW AR and he was a wonderful dog and we are experiencing a huge void. We are looking to give a home to another dog like "Erine". We'd like a brindle (fawn second choice) male that is not more than a year old. We would like a very large dog as we live on a 140 acre farm and space is not a problem. We have 3 other dogs and 9 horses. (I have dressage/hunters/jumpers and now learning to drive work horses). We need a dog that will be good with kids, other dogs and horses and be an outside dog. We are in no rush and would prefer to adopt a dog that needs a home rather than get buy a puppy.

Please let me know if you have anything.
