So i said to my Girl friend at the time shall we go and see him. So we got tickets and went for a beer before hand in the pub right next door which was very quiet. All I remember was thinking is it or isnt it. There he was sitting there having a pint of stella himself. Honestly it was bizaar. But anyway cut a long story short went up to him got him to use pen & bought him another pint of stella. Hes a top chap

Comments:I am genuinely impressed with all the material you collected!

Being a Marillion fan for a mere couple of months (just don't ask how I could ignore a band that great for that long!), I tried to figure out the meaning of all those great lyrics myself.

I failed, of course.

Not being a native English speaker certainly didn't improve things a lot, but I reckoned I had a fairly good understanding of the language. But understanding the words isn't quite the same as understanding all the hidden implications.

I managed to make sense of some fragments of all that, but the overall picture was missing - until, by freak accident, I stumbled upon your great web site - at which point many of those pieces fell into place.

There are still holes, of course - but let's call it "room for imagination"....
;-)

All in all: Thanks a lot, and keep up the great work!

1) The name of Lenin was Vladimir Ilich, Lenin was his
nickname.

Indeed you are correct: Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov on April 22,
1870 in the city of Simbirsk on the Volga River. Like
"Stalin" for Dzhugashvili, "Lenin" is one of several
pseudonyms used by Mr. Ulyanov. Just as "Stalin" is said to
be from the Russian root word "stal," meaning 'steel,'
"Lenin" is based on the Russian root word "Lena," the name
of a peaceful Siberian river that Lenin discovered during
one of his exiles.

From: http://www.acerj.com/CommOnline/Leninbio.htm

I will add this info ASAP.

2) You fail to mention the internment camps for
japanese-americans and germans-americans in the USA during
WWII (which I think are also implied in the song).

I think it is unlikely these are specifically implied since
the song was about the European situation, but in its wider
sense, the sentiments of the song apply equally.

Cheers,

Fraser

Great site, though I think I might need some time to get to

I noticed some minor mistakes and omissions in your
explanation of the song White Russians.
1) The name of Lenin was Vladimir Ilich, Lenin was his

2) You fail to mention the internment camps for
japanese-americans and germans-americans in the USA during

Just had to send a mail to award you 10 points for a job
well done. Bloody marvellous site, learned a few things.
I was very much into Marillion back in the 80s. Fish's
lyrics were fantastic and said so much to a adolescent
dropped up to his neck in life, from a great height :-)
It inspired me to write a few songs myself, but they are
lost now.
Once Fish left, so did I though, Clutching at straws was the
last album as far as I was concerned.

Comments:I'm Spanish and when I got the Cambridge Certificate of
Proficiency in English I never thought that I'd have such
insuperable difficulties as I did when I first heard
Marillion lyrics. Ever since then I've been trying
to translate the lyrics to friends with disastrous
results. Visiting your page has been absolutely
invaluable...! It takes a long time to read the Explanations
of... The results, however, are so good that it's worth the
effort! congratulations!

Comments:When I bought 'Clutching At Straws' and 'Misplaced
Childhood' in 1988 I thought that Marillion was an OK band.
However it took a fit of drunken slurry to fully apresiate
the lyrics. I try describe Marillion as poetry made into
music to the unintiated. I have now made a booklet with the
lyrics and your explanations for each of the Fish albums.
To this end I have recruited my wife to the cause. Thanks

Comments:No comments! since first I entered into this site it became
my favorite one. I usually spend N hours just reading once
and once again, then I listen to the tracks and try to
match the explanations... even walking by London I do it..
the best!!
I realize that it has been updated !!. Like a year ago I
downloaded a Zip file with all the explanations... is this
available now?

I still remember the first time ... I could not belive I
found such a site like this..
Best..

Comments:Great site very interesting and informative. Both
Marillion eras are underappreciated by the masses! I liked
your summation of differences between Fish and
Hogarth/Helmer lyrics. You are right on! I like Marillion
in both eras too.

Comments:Excellent site, almost as good as Scott McMahan's. I would
be really greatful if an explanations page of Fish's solo
work would be created in the future.

Keep up the good work!

Comments:Hi, Really enjoyed the analysis of Fish' lyrics. There were
always those very British lines that some of us Americans
could never figure out the meaning of,and discussed
endlessly at basement parties while listening to the
albums. Found the stuff in "Garden Party" very interesting.
Always thought the video for that one was especially cool.

Comments:At last, you get around to putting a guestbook on this site.

Like the new style, there's a few nice updates to the songs,
just need to get that H stuff online now.

Regards,

John
