I just digitized all my albums and that was one of them, so now I've been singing Patto songs to myself for the last week. It was great reading all the info on Mike and the band, I didn't know he was that well known in England but it surely is understandable. I'm going to start building my Patto/Timebox, etc. collection soon. Thanks for a great site for a great band.

Comments: FROM THE DESK OF MR.DAVID KING
AUDITING AND ACCOUNTING MANAGER,
BANK OF AFRICA (B.O.A)
OUAGADOUGOU-BURKINA FASO.

Dear Friend,

First, I must solicit your confidence in this transaction, I am Mr David King Auditting Accounting Manager.

This is by virtue of its nature as being utterly Confidential and top secret. However I was asked to audit the bank and there I came across of sum amount been unclaim that belong to one of the bank customer Dr George Brumley

During the above mentioned process, I discovered theabandoned sum of US$10.5M (Ten million five hundred thousand US dollars) in an account that belongs to one of our foreign customer who died along with his entire family in a plane crash that happened in Kenya, East Africa.

Since we got information about his death, which the bank have been expecting
his next of kin to come over and claim his money because the bank cannot release it unless some body applies for it as next of kin or relation to the deceased as indicated in our banking guidelines and laws but unfortunately we learnt that all his supposed next of kin or
relation died alongside with him at the plane crash. It is therefore upon this discovery that I send this business proposal to you so that the fund can be release to you as the next of kin or relation to the deceased for safety and subsequent disbursement since nobody is coming for it and the bank don't want this money to go into the bank treasury as unclaimed bill.

I agree that 50% of this money will be for you as a foreign partner, in respect to the provision of a foreign account where the fund will be transfer, and 50% would be for me and there after I will visit your country for disbursement according to the percentage indicated. Therefore, to enable the immediate transfer of this fund to you as arranged, you must apply first to the bank as relation or next of kin of the deceased.

Upon the receipt of your reply, I will send to you by email the text of the application to fill and send to the bank. I will not fail to bring to your notice that this transaction is hitch-free risk and this transaction will only take us 14 banking days because as a banker, I know what to do and move the fund into your account without any delay and you should not
entertain any atom of fear.

You should contact me as soon as you receive this letter so that I can send to you the text of the application

Yours faithful.
Mr David King
Auditting Accounting Manager.

My friend (sang like Mike/passed like Mike) and me put up a band in 70's, did few gigs and (sadly)broke up (army etc.).
The main thing was: Play something different! That different was Patto, O-Band, Family, Wigwam aso.

But: Being musician in Finland, hmm... joopa joo (er...)...
you have to play traditional music (like in UK)....
Forgot Patto, forgot roots? No way! I woke up!

Anyway, like many I only heard of Timebox from their brilliant single (a B-Side, so I've learnt!) 'Gone Is The Sandman' I heard on one of those many psychedelic compilations floating around. I just fell in love with the vibe of the song and was wondering if you have chords/tabs/sheet music for it. If so I would much appreciate it if I could have it! I'd love to play it live with the band and let people know what a great song it is. Anyway, if you could that would be much appreciated!

Comments: I was playing organ with the Bo Street Runners in 1966 when we played a gig in Kings Lynn. The opening act were The Continentals featuring Mike Patto on vocals. I was very impressed with Mike and asked Mike to join the Bo Street Runners as replacement vocalist which he refused. I later wrote to him and asked him to join us again (no cell phones or internet in those days!). This time I added the fact that I had just purchased a Hammond organ, an instrument that gave kudos to the band and amazingly, actually added to the band's bookability. Mike came down to London and joined the band. there followed many years of wonderful music, fun times, love and a friendship that I treasure to this day. I still miss Mike and those heady days.
Does anyone know the whereabouts of the following:
Barry Wilson, Barry 'Fats' Dean, Harvey and band members of The News/ The Continentals, Paddy Donelly, Levi McCarthy and any of the crew from Norwhich/Kings Lynn/Swaffham. I'm writing a book and would like to hear from anyone with pics and memories of Mike and those glorious times.
I presume Mike has a band where ever he is, that he's still taking the Micky out of Roger Bunn and writing great songs. I still have the original hand written lyrics to 'My Sunshine's Back', a song that Mike and I wrote back in the early 1970's.

I got into PATTO and BOXER about 20 years ago (i'm 41 now), when an older friend of mine lent me PATTO'S HOLD YOUR FIRE (with original pop-up sleeve) and BELOW THE BELT by BOXER. Hearing those two albums left me flabbergasted, I couldn't understand why these guys weren't hugely successful or why OLLIE HALSALL wasn't a household name like Clapton, Beck and Page. They remain, to this day, two of my very favourite groups and over the years i have introduced dozens of pairs of earsto both of them.Keep up the good work and keep on spreading the word.

Comments: Mike & Ollie...two great musicians so much missing. In particular, Ollie was one of the best, Allan Holdsworth took many ideas just developed by him. The past year I talked with Allan about the 1973 BBC concert when they were both in Jon Hiseman's Tempest. In 1992 Ollie was the pale shadow of the fine rocker we knew...his sad and dark passing will always be lighted by his musician work. The most underrated musician in the whole music history but, just in a curious way, this testifies that Ollie Halsall was great as well.

most eruptive phase(subjective,yes,but...may the one who
DOES believe "Hold Your Fire" could be topped throw the first Gibson SG) ; telescoping an otherwise lengthy essay:
in a matter of seconds upon hearing Ollie for the first time I was subject to an adjustment of perception of what a
guitar could sound like.He was truly unique. And so were the
other Pattos as well;they were simply too extraordinarily
skilled to be cleanly,commercially embottled.Rare.

Ive got the original recordings somewhere, but I've never heard them, so it was quite emotional to say the least as unfortunately, my dad's no longer with us.

I love the tracks that Ive heard and I must say its an honour to be associated with such great music.

Mike Patto of the gravelly voice. Lovely guy.

I walk over to where the records were sitting in front of the counter, and I see a record with the most awesome artwork of a face with the teeth reading Patto in yellow. Now you can't judge a book by it's cover, but album art for an album shows a lot of character for the records persona. I knew instantly these guys must be interesting. I got the guy behind the counter to pop in a cd version and a test drive before I bought it. I was sold instantly. "The Man" has to be one of the most overlooked ballads in the 70's. The build up is awesome, and the vibe it has is uplifting and awesome. I bought the record immeadeatly, and listen ot it constantly. Patto, you rocked, and are definetily under-estimated and looked over in the world of music. Definately a lost gem in music.

Comments: Greetings! Way back in 1970 I found a promo copy of Patto's first and became an instant fan. It was actually Olly's guitar work that really hooked me although the group sounds great and the songs are fine. Of course Olly's playing leading into Money Bag is terrific and was a mind blower for me back in'70. Can't say that the friends I partied with were smitten by the band as I was so Patto became a favorite private listening treat. Something about being high and watching the Vertigo label do its optical thing as the song The Man started its slow build... I'm sure that Mike's vocal on that tune convinced me of his and Patto's passion to make a statement! I have only heard the first album but it is enough to fill my cup. Pat

Comments: Hello all,

I'm not really a Patto fan, but I enjoy Timebox records very much, this is in fact one of the greatest acts from the sixties. And unfortunately it's a great difficulty to find their records, not only here in Russia, but in Europe as well (since the Deram anthology is out of print and not all of their songs are available on compilations). So I would kindly ask if anyone has information on possible reissue of band's material or just advise where the anthology can be found.

Thanks in advance.
Dmitry.

Comments: "Way back" in the 70's I was fortunate enough to find a demo copy of Patto in some cut out bin I frequented. This bin also provided me with copies of Van Der Graaf Generator's H to He and Jackson Heights' King Progress among other gems. Anyway, Patto blew me away. And being stoned and watching the lp's Vertigo vortex label spinning around and round (cheap thrills are where you find 'em) only added to the impact of the first tune with Mike's voice blasting out of the speakers. Ollie's angular guitar attack added to the freshness of the music which appealed to my affinity for jazz lines a la Miles and Coltrane. None of my friends at the time were familiar with Patto but anyone who heard the recording at my place seemed to like them and their departure from the norm. Wait, was there a "norm" in those days??? What a time for the emergence of glorious music. So much, so good...). Fans of Patto, I salute you and your devotion to what was a truly great band.

Comments: Patto , what a band ,we used to travel to the Black Swan in Sheffield every time they were on . We would have to start queing at 6.00pm just to make sure we got in . It was always packed to the rafters for every show. Shaking all over was always a showstopper and loud green song just blew us away. Many many happy memories . Question ,was Hold Your Fire sleeve designed by Roger Dean. Any help would be appreciated. I have all the origional albums on vinyl but they have all been well used over the years.
The Black Swan is still operatig as the Boardwalk and is still a great venue.

I recently happened to watch on TV a UK club act called the Reel Peole, and I noticed that the keyboardist's name was Mike Patto. I wonder if this guy is the late Mike Patto's son, Michael. Can anybody confirm this? Also, is he the same guy who released an album entitled "Time to Be Right" in 1991 under the name of Michael Patto? I would appreciate it if anyone could enlighten me about this.

Comments: I've been a fan of Patto since seeing them in Paget Rooms Penarth in South Wales in 1971. Although I had albums I was delighted to pick up the Sense of the Absurd cd a couple of years ago. Still sounds fresh now. Superb fluent guitar and what a tone! Mike's vocals have so much passion and what a rhythm section? sparce, strident bass allowing busy yet solid drums. As a pro drummer myself, since '74 I've not heard anything that captures the freedom and groove of Patto. Possibly, Little Feat in they're hayday. Great to see they're so well remembered. Great site!

I saw patto first with ten years after in ravensburg southgermany somewhere in 1972 ??? on this gig ten years after played as a trio, cause their keyborder was out of order :-)

around 1975 i dont remember exactly, i was in london marquee club and saw patto in an amusing 3 hours concert.

so believe: from that date i was a very big pattoadmirer and many of my friends are hardcore pattolovers deep down in southgermany countryside.

we were freaks in that times and we bought all the records from patto boxer kevin ayers and so far..........

anyway i feel very very sorry for the tragedy of pattohistory.

thanx barney

Great live band, especially 'shakin all over' and there barbershop 'strangers in the fuckin night exchanging fucking glances' etc. Ollie was the greatest guitarist I saw and that includes Steve Miller. He used to play these great rifts with the guitar behind his neck, incredible!!! Great web site and sad to see how they ended up. Mike patto was a great personality/singer and had a real presence on stage.

Comments: Mike was a wonderful talent who managed to pack a lifetime of great music into his all too brief life. In 1974, I was fortunate enough to see him in concert when he was fronting Spooky Tooth. What a show it was!!! There is so much information about him on your site! It has been a real pleasure exploring! However, I was perplexed at Eddie Tuduri's comments regarding Adrian Fisher. Adrian passed away in early 2000 after playing a gig. By all accounts, he was very happy and well liked by all who met him. Martin Gordon (Adrian's bandmate in Sparks, and a member of Jet, Radio Stars, his solo CD "Baboon In The Basement" is a real jewel...but like Mike Patto, Martin is grossly under appreciated!) has a wonderful site (http://www.geocities.com/martinjjgordon/index.html) with information regarding Adrian for anyone who is interested. I am hoping that Boxer's "Absolutely" will be released on CD in the very near future. It deserves a better fate than it has received. I sincerly hope Chris Stainton, Eddie T., Tim Bogert (what a bass player!) and the other surviving members of Patto and Boxer are doing well. Thanks to all who contributed to this incredible body of work.

A good friend and big fan( cheers Rudeboy) recently sent me a cd of 'Monkey's Bum' and it is excellent-shame about the dodgy sound , but hey, the vibe shines through and it got me playing the 1st 3 albums again which still sound fantastic( fortunately my copies are in good nick too!)

Comments: In 1972 I taped a set of songs from a Dutch radio programme (Super Clean Dream Machine). I did not know the name of the performers, did not even know if the songs were from the same performer(s) (three different vocals). From the lyrics I could (hardly) make out something about a flat-footed woman, something with singing the blues on reds, and someone who sings he's got rhythm. Thrilling songs! A few years later, that good old taperecorder (home brewn, turning from right to left) had been fixed a little too much and had to go. I could just make a lousy sounding copy of the songs. Now where could I find the songs? Who were the performers? I tried to get information from the radiostation, I walked around with a tape for years, forcing dozens of music fanatics to listen to my lousy tape. Just two days ago i had another try with some interested people. Nothing, all in vain.
This morning, more than 20 years later, I typed in the words 'flat-footed woman'. A hit! I went to your site, and, gawd! found this song, AND the other two songs, AND the name of the performer. Incredible, I have to lie down a bit now, and will go after the songs themselves later on. Pfui! Another quest ended... (pleaease mail me if you know how or where to get a copy of these and other Patto songs. Warm hug in return)

Comments: Sometimes you may consider yourself a "knowledgable" musician/fan, as it was in my case in 1991(sigh!). I had just moved to Madrid from Boston, when I got a job at the Synclavier studio in Estudios Kirios. A few weeks into it a guy who EVERYBODY "revered" in the studio came to work with me, trying to play sampled drums on the Synclavier, LIVE(!)i.e.,not sequenced. This person was Ollie. He wore a black leather jacket and jeans and smoked "Ducados" (black tobacco). Now I feel I could kick myself for not knowing who he was. He was producing an artist called Lucrecia for EMI(never got released, that I know of). Also, he told me he had recorded "the best guitar solo on the album" of a Galician Rock band called "Los Suaves"(Dame Rock and Roll LP, who were recording in Kirios) with a right handed gtr and a mic stand-in one take. I had the pleasure of spending with him a 45 minute bus ride from Madrid to the studio, in which we talked about how easy it was to get good stuff in Spain and asked me to "help him" find an apartment within close proximity of the studio. I found him quite heavy to be around-not a lot of fun, although he did have his moments, like everyone else. <p>
After finding this site a couple of years back I got hold of a Russian pressing(if Robert Fripp is to be trusted- no royalties for anyone from that CD-speaking of the Frippster,I wouldn't expect him to release the Blue Traffs tapes, him being the anal retentive he is, my guess is that Ollie blew him away-Odds are better for Alvin Lee to release the live Patto tapes-if he hasn't sold them for recreational substances already) of "Sense of the Absurd" and of Tempest "Living in Fear". He REALLY was something, and so was Mike, the Admiral and Clive. "Hold your fire" is dense, and so is "Patto". Maybe the fact that they never filmed any of their gigs-or recorded them properly, says lots of their own expectations of themselves & the band. Surely they would have broken the big time if they had stuck together and kept going like Patto(sorry, Tempest is quite good, but I think it's inferior). But it's what I "say to" Mike Patto when I listen to their stuff now-"at least you made it to CD,man!"-Thank you for that powerful jab to the jaw that is Patto.

Its nice to read all the tributes about ollie and the band, the more I listen the more I realise how good Mr Halsey was/is Possibly very Bonhamish.
Hopefully Steve.

I'm sure I saw it once at a record fayre, and as well as live Patto it also contained some Boxer sessions from the BBC (I think???). If anybody could burn me a copy I would be forever in their debt. I would like to get more information about other songs and bands especially olli halsall's art of playing. Can someone give my information of available cds of ollie or patto or other bands which they were in?? (Kevin Ayers?????)
May their music never be forgotten!!!!!

Comments: Love Patto! Haven't heard them in 20 years or so..

I'm a 47 year guitarist - and Ollie was right there with the fantastic Allan Hodsworth as the cutting edge jazz/rock guitarists of their time (Allan still rules).

The whole band was happening - probably too good for commercial appeal -

Cheers -

Comments: Reading the guestbook brings back the fondest memories of the Torrington in Finchley, where Patto were regulars in the early 70s. The most memorable nights however were when Mike would sing with a group of friends (Zoot Money, Neil Hubbard, Carol Grimes, Mel Collins) under the monicker Dick & the Firemen (Plenty of Dick and not a fire in sight!) It's nice to see on the sight that so many others retain fond memories and that the music is resurfacing and available to buy.
p.s. Has anyone got a recording of a tune called "General Custer" as done for the BBC (for John Peel's late-night show perhaps?) Would really appreciate hearing from you if you have.

Comments: Hi There from Koh Samui, Thailand.
I was pleased I found this site eventually as it was fun to read about my good friend Adrian Fisher, who was the guitarist with Sparks, Toby (with Andy Fraser), and of course Boxer for the Absolutely album.
I played Rythm guitar and Bass for Adrian on many occasions mainly here in Thailand , but once in the UK too. Every where he went he impressed and I wasn't surprised Andy wanted to play with him after he split Free up. Mike Patto was one of Adrians hero's....
He often told me of Mike's "Impressions" and if you have read Eddie Tuduri's excerpt on this site, I can confirm that his description is entirely accurate. His description of Adrian is probably true too, and he never beat about the bush as to how he hated Americans, as he had loathed his time with Sparks and had especially hated the 2 American brothers who fronted the Band, though also because of Eddie and him not hitting it off too well.
Well, Adrian had a wish to outlive Eddie, but unfortunately he didn't. He was drinking heavily a local Thai Rum called Sang Thip, and when he couldn't get that he'd drink Mekhong, which tastes like that's exactly where it comes from. He drank this stuff for the 8 years that I knew him, and then one day he came out of a bar and collapsed on the pavement, where he lay until a passing Cop stopped to check on him.
He left behind a Thai wife, Yupa, who now lives in Bangkok.
Contrary to Eddie's description, I thought he was a terrific bloke and miss him a lot. If you want to see some pictures of him playing in those last 8 years, have a look at www.secretgarden.co.th where there are a few on various galleries on the site.

But for germans who are interested in this band and want to get their records (at least their two first ones) visit: www.jpc.de you can get their albums there as imports...
why i sign this guestnbook is the following question to you:

Comments: Hey Patto people! I only just really got into Patto to be honest. I'm 16, I collect records. Nuff said. Anyway, I know about the albums and how bloody hard they are to get, but never actually had the chance to hear them properly. Yesterday, I was at a local record fair when I managed to pick up a decent copy of ROLL 'EM, SMOKE 'EM... I must say I was impressed (I'm also a fan of the Bonzos, so I guess that figures)... What a band! A friend had also given me a tape of the 1st album yesterday, which I think is even better. But, why oh why can't you get the albums on CD?!? That really takes the piss, pardon my french... Anyway, if there is anybody out there who is willing to sell reasonable copies of the 1st two albums (UK issues please!), let me know and state yer price. I know it's unlikely because this is a fan site, not a selling site, but you can't blame me for trying?! Anyway, I will be checking out this site in a few days so speak to you all then....

I'm one of the probably few Americans who were heavily into Patto & Boxer back in the day - used to haunt import record stores in & around NYC searching for Patto LP's I didn't have. Always hoped to see 'em, then it was too late. Was recently reminded of Boxer when a friend used the word "moose" - All The Time In The World came rushing back into my brain - so decided to do some Web searching tonite. And here you are. What a pleasure.

Comments: Used to work in London's marquee in 1966 and 1967. We had a lot of fun with PATTO.
In 1971 I presented PATTO in Germany on a tour with the FACES and May Blitz, so some more dates could be added to the tour date list: 14th April 71 Düsseldorf, 15th April 71 Hamburg, 16th April 71 Frankfurt and 17th April Munich (later is already in the list mentioned).

Perhaps some old friends from those long ago marquee days are still around?

Comments: Love this website! Love Patto, talented singer-songwriter, and was truly a great man. I spent a couple of years very close with PATTO and his family in the early 70's. My new husband at the time was Keith Ellis the Bass player in the Band Boxer.Ollie gave me my first guitar,a sawn off strat! The musical education I had acquired from these guys back then was priceless! I thought PATTO was great in Spooky Tooth which was one of my favorite bands. I miss these guys, but the music and memories that they had created live on. Love to The McCarthy family, God bless you always. Rock on- Love Deborah (in LA)

Comments: First saw Patto in a London pub and loved how different they were. They made me laugh out loud with their playacting and fun-songs but could switch back and kick ass with the best of them. Bought the music papers to check the gig lists and followed them around. Became a familiar face and would sometimes end up backstage sharing the Vodka bottle and singing their own in-house songs ..."Is You Is Or Is You Aint My Baby"..."Stairway Of Love Tonight" etc.
I left London and got married but the memories linger on and always makes me smile. In this present world of stress, anger and rage they are the one band OUT OF ALL OF THEM that I would love to have back performing again. Oh Mummy !

Comments: Hi,what a great fan site this has turned out to be.Mike Patto was my brother. We used to be in a skiffle group together when we were 12 & 14 years old,we mainly appeared in local youth clubs in Norfolk.I always knew Mike would go on to good things, but regret very much he and Ollie are no longer with us to see their legacy they and the remainder of their bands left us all.
Mikes son-Michael,is also a fine musician,so the music lives on.I remember once, I was playing my guitar[right handed] Ollie took it from me,turned it upside down, and proceeded to play it as if wasmeant to be played that way-he was truly amazing.God bless you all-Phil-McC
