Comments:If you were fortunate to live in Boston in the 80's, the nightlife was off the hook...
Every night was a musical holiday...
We had The Del Fuegos, The Neats, Scruffy, The Bosstones, The Oysters, The Replacements... it was endless and always over the top.
Most of us have survived and are better for it. Thankfully, I have saved old posters, records and tapes so that I can cherish the days when there was a music scene in Boston (and I had mastered the art of staying up past midnight!)
Hope you are all well...

Went to 3 of the shows listed, #149 at Winnie's, 170 at NU and the f***** craziest at the the Loft, #177. Saw quite a few of the bands listed and went to just as many of the venues. Great list.

Comments:<< speaking of Boston bands, what about a Neighborhoods reunion? Anyone know what Dave and Lee are up to? I miss the hell out of them, one of the best live bands of all time.>>

Stephen might no more as I haven't been keeping up to it lately but David married Judy from Salem 66 and they have a couple of kids.
He went out on tour with Paul Westerberg a few years ago and I saw him do a show with a band he assembled at TT's a little before that I think but what he's seems to be doing mostly is producing and/or playing on bands at his Wooly Mammoth (?) studios down in the Fenway.
I last Lee a decade+(?) a go when he was goinmg to scholl at UMass-Boston...looking rather fit and happy as I recall...but like I said I haven't been keeping up.
I haven't heard any rumblings of a Neighborhoods reunion at all.

But if interested, the Prime Movers have been playing around lately as a 4-piece since Dennis McCarthy has been back back from L.A. for an extended period of time.
From all reports...and from what Dennis tells me, "WE ROCK BABY!"

Comments:Hey Don! I've bid on Tiny Days lots of times on e-Bay but refuse to top the $30 mark. There were four of them on there at one time once and I hoped they'd diffuse the bidding but no luck. I do have a burned copy so I am not without.

But seeing that they go for that kinda money, you'd think who ever owns the rights to that album would knock off a thousand CDs and just sell them on e-Bay.

Comments:What I find funny is that all my favorite Scuffy songs are from the EPs, therefore not available on CD. After waiting 16 years for these recordings to come out on CD I'm finally recording them from vinyl to disc (the MP3's I downloaded from Audio Galaxy didn't sound that great... maybe there are some okay ones out there). Anyway, I'll forever be thankful to Scruffy for releasing "High Octane Revival". I like Tiny Days and Moons, but they can't compare to that first EP (nor the two studio songs on Boom Boom). Great stuff. Now, if only I could find a T-Shirt with the cat on the front!

He sent me a tape of Tiny Days with They Might be Giants first album on the other side. What a great tape. When it broke I made him make me a new one.To this day I still count Scruffy the Cat as one of my favorite bands along with Beatles and SRV.

I read an article on the web about a possible Scruffy box set. What happened to that? If you watch Scruffy auctions on e-Bay you know there's a market.

Comments:Great site!! I remember my brother turning me on to Scruffy in the late 80's. We were North Carolinians who had a lot of great and original music available to us, but it was Scruffy who opened my eyes. Then in 89, for one of their last shows I had the pleasure of interviewing them on my radio show at the University of Mississippi (WUMS-FM). The guys were great and played several songs live and acoustic. At the time I recorded the songs; I think, Blue Russian and Dirty Rat. Unfortunately one of my f-stick friends stole the tape. All that I am left with now is some poorly burned cd's of everything available. Does any one know how I can get original cd's of Scruffy the Cat. Please hit me back.
Thanks, JT

Comments:Well now, this is a gas!

Mentioned to Pat McGrath, (speaking of m.i.a. Condo Pygmies), that despite the fact that Mac had moved near me, we've only been able to hook up a couple of times over the last 6 months, (work and kids seem to have a way to eat up time).

Well, Paddy tells me that there is Scruffy site and I couldn't be more tickled pink.

A brief background: I was one of those most dreaded and chastised tools of the rock world, the dreaded sound guy, (yes, we were below even the light guys in the RnR food chain). I cut my teeth with the the Del Fuegos but I have to say that my work with the Scruffs was the funnest, (that a word?).

There wasn't a diner, pawn shop, book and/or comic store or guitar emporium that these boys wouldn't stop into. When others went from point A to point B as quickly as possible, the Scruffs would take the backroads as much as possible...not wanting to miss any of the "real" America that's rapidly falling to the wrecking ball to make way for fast food franchises and malls anchored by Wal-Mart....usually with the incomporable Keith Fletcher sharing the wheel with Charlie, his voice starting yet another tale that always began with "Ah, that reminds me of a story..." as it wafted to the back benches where Randall and I were usually sleeping off the remains of the contract rider.

If anyone is still in touch with Keith, please give him a howdy from me....and ask him if he's still pining for that left-handed White Falcon.

Mac and I went over that tour list a few years ago and it bought back a rush of memories as well as some things that were lost with the brain cells that dissipated through...(koff*) various indulgences...("YES Bill, we DID play in Columbus, OH with the Titanics"...Lawdy hep' me, I still can't remember that night).

Time marches on, bringing new challenges and all those other cliches that you hear on top 40 radio... but I can definitely say that this period was a blast, a highlight for me and I honestly miss them.

Don't see the boys much at all...despite living nearby.
- Mac and I have been planning a Guinness sitdown every week for a couple of months now or catch him as he sits in with Shaun Wolf Wortis' latest project. Like I said, them other priorities take precedance...
- Stephen is playing in another new band and I usually get updates of him whenever I pay my regular but infrequent visits to his brother Dave in town...(say hi to Peg for me).
- Randall I haven't seen since I borrowed that kick pedal at 11 pm on a Monday night for an emergency...seems the drummer of a band on a record label I was working for, forgot his back in his NYC practice space, (no drummer jokes please)...
- Charlie I'd see from time to time with his Motorbikes. It's been a while though...
- Saw Stona at the Stephen benefit and dang didn't he look good, in great spirits and smiling the whole evening...
- Burns I last saw at a Saturday Morning Softball game a few years ago, oozing confidence, a real pillar he is...100% standup....
- Lilli I saw very briefly at her club a year ago but I keep hearing rumours that she's going to New Orleans for a spell...
- Keith I last saw in the movie Slacker...ironic, eh?

People who heard these boys play live could tell that these boys loved to play...it was obvious.
I always got pumped when they played, always wondered when they were going to stray from the set list into whatever cover that they were learning at the time, always waited for Randall to drop that beer on his lap when he couldn't get it around his cigarette while he was playing, (he never did), always waited for Stephen's facial expression as he would invariably self-critique himself right after, (or sometimes during), his last solo, always waited for that body shaking chuckle of Charlie's whenever somebody said something amusing to him on stage, and always waited for Mac to give that 24 karat smile indicating a good time was to be had...and it usually was.

Sorry to tease anyone else here but this is for Scruffs only...I do have a box of tapes from shows and I just recently found that video that was shot down at CBGB's....call me for copies, (Mac has my number) or give me an e-mail.

Coincidently enough, as I was searching for this site, I ran into Anita Maffei's site which has a few Scruffy pictures
http://www.bostonphotography.com/bands/index.shtml
and if I can ever find the time, I'll look in my boxes for some photos I have and post them on my own site, ( or here?)

Anyways, enough memory lane BS.
I have work to do and the World Cup starting times is throwing my schedule askew...I must run.

I interviewed Charlie Chesterman for a feature story I wrote back in the late 80s for Scene Magazine of Cleveland. I found this site and found out an effort to reunite the boys was dropped by Chesterman, I was bummed. They were the true root rockers of the end of the century. I wish i could find Thomas Doubter and My aby, She's All Right on limewire or imesh since napster is in handcuffs. Anyway, someboyd write back and trade scruffy trhe cat news and stories.

Comments:Favorite memory from college. I was program director of WESU, the station at Wesleyan in Middletown CT. I'd spent a sememster in Boston and got into the band, so I invited them to play live on the station. We had a shitty setup, but despite the low-fi Scruffy sounded great. After the show (about midnight) they dragged their equipment down to one of the dorms and traded another show for a keg. Played another hour and a half. Then we piled into my dorm room and everyone slept on any available surface. After they had gone, I noticed that they'd done unspeakable things to my towels.

I managed to find all the Scruffy material on Napster before it croaked. Still don't know why the band broke up and why they can't get back together or re-release their old disks. Wish it were all happiness and pie again.

I recall a rockin' evening at 'The Tree Cafe' in Portland, Maine back in 86 or 87... Alas my cassette copy of 'Tiny Days' is starting to get warbled, and that doofus college friend of my wife's that I lent my 'Moons' tape to ten years ago lost it! Can't one of the former band members get ahold of the original recordings and make them available for purchase as MP3s? Looking forward to more details about that reunion!!

I downloaded some "momma killed hate" and "dirty rat" off napster before they went down.Actually Scruffy was about all I found worth while on nap. Had I known I would have been kinder to my tapes and records (or not). ANYWAY,,Scruffy still rules for this Boston Boy. Hot summer night, Di pressed up against the trunk of my Nova SS, Scruffy wailing in the back ground...ahh to be young again. Then again we made a mess of our lives that night!God my mind drifts, so I'm sitting here and decide to do a search for scruffy and found this site . Joel and Walter had a band called "Women of the Opposite Sex" which practiced in the basement. They managed to get a gig at a bar in Allston on lower Harvard Ave. that was experimenting with live music... it was billed as a record release party (actually, Walter just threw used records into the crowd... I don't know that WotOS ever recorded). But what made the night special was an ACOUSTIC gig by Scruffy the CAT! These guys had tore it up at Chet's and other places, but this little pick and grin was a real treat.

Because my friend Greg used to run errands for Scruffy the Cat, once in a while Charlie would invite us to be Scruffy the Cats opening act. We opened for them a couple of times at Babson College which was our biggest gigs ever. We actually got paid money for those as well as a private dressing area and a catored balogna buffet. They really were so good. Charlie and the other guitar player had matching orange Chet Atkins Gretch's and they could really utilize them well. I use to watch their fingers and try to steal their riffs. Them and the guitar player from the Turbines named Jack Hickey. We use to get gigs with them too because we both drove cabs for Town Taxi and we would hang out and talk in the drivers room. He played this great big ugly green Gretch also that he could twang the hell out of. Charlie Chesterman has great fashion sense too. In the winter he would wear this big 1940's London Fogg looking overcoat and when he took it off he had an incredible all white leather motocycle jacket on underneath. How cool is that?

he explained to me that he bought a suit jacket in a second hand store, and after wearing it for a while he noticed a lump in one of the seams... when he investigated further to find out what it was, it turned out to be a gold ring!
so that's why he had a wedding ring.

After our set the other guys took off to party, but I stuck around--and I'm glad I did! Still one of the best shows I have ever seen. Incredibly tight band and fun, fun, fun!

I hope to post some mp3s to the above webpage soon

Comments:Hey, really cool page. It's so cool that there are people
around the web who keep these kind of tributes to great
music going. Alas, I did not start listening to STC until
1989 when I got into college radio. It was a shame that
they didn't achieve more success after "Moons...". The
songs "Love's So Amazing" and "Kissing Galaxy" were great
little pop numbers that I thought would lead them further.
Alas, it was not to be. And I wish I could been there for
the show where Mojo Nixon opened!

Lingere in LA in 1988 or 1989. Mojo Nixon opened for them,
setting the perfect mood with his rap about how chicken
McNuggets contain used condoms. Too bad it was your
standard diffident LA hipster crowd.

Whatever happened to the great unsung bands of my youth (the
Blasters, the Plimsouls, STC . . .)????

and "Tiny Days". I remember seeing them in the
early/mid 80's at "The Livingroom" it was a great place
to see bands in Providence, RI. The band came on
stage a little after midnight, and pelted the crowd with
plastic forks.

The balancing Act opened for them. (They were awesome
too.) It was the best show ever (any band anywhere!). It
was the last time the bar ever used glass pitchers. Total
Mayhem. I remember the lead guitarist kicking everything
off our table so he could stand on it and play. (There went
our our pitcher of beer). A fight broke out in the back of
the bar and when we turned back around we saw the rodies
picking the lead guitarist off the floor and helping him
out of the bar. The show ended!!!

Comments:Hey, just surfed in from slowriver.com on a hunch that
Charlie would be up to something. What do you know - a fan
site and an official site with a tour calendar! I was just
listening to a mix I made of CC and Scruffy and thought
it's been 3 years, about t me for a new cd. Not only will
that wish come true, but CC is coming to Virginia in June
to play a beer festival at the Old Dominion brewery,
pratically in my back yard! Must be some kind of divine
intervention, cause I haven't seen him play since back
in '87 with Scruffy at the old 9:30 club in D.C. I'm
marking June 24 on my calendar and stocking up on film.
How'd you like some live photos for your web site? Now that
I think about it, I could video the show with my Panasonic
digital camcorder...but on the other hand I'm not sure if
filming live music and a beer festival would be a
successful combination. Depends on what time CC and the
Motorbikes will be playing! Your tribute to CC and Scruffy
the Cat rocks - I'm glad I'm not the only one still
listening t them. Let me know what you think about photos
for your site. Cheers, Tom
