| Comments: | Hello, My second sheperd developed PF after I had changed his dry food to a half half mix of Purina Beta and Wagg in july of 2009. By august he was licking himself a lot and had loose and muddy stools. I took him off the Wagg but he developed PF. This ties in with the irritable bowel syndrome as a trigger as a factor in excess immune response. He was put on predazone, then imuran without success but after one week on 200mg of cyclosporine the PF looks to have stopped spreading and in fact the perianal area look like it's closing over. I read extensively on dog food and switched him to Origin 6 Fish. A fish and potato diet with NO grains what so ever. This has been reported to be a likely significant factor in allowing healing and discouraging future PFs, but time will tell. I'm not pushing a brand, I just use Origin as a base meal. I feed him liver and organ meats as well, so the Origin will last a month or so. |

| Comments: | My little Min Pin started with blood on her anus all of a sudden...Feb. 14,09. I thought she had eaten a bone that tore her colen...long story short 3 vets later and a colonostophy
and her anal glands removed, she then developed "perianal modules" (says Vet) which looked liked "perianal fistules" The Vet gave her many different anti-biotic meds, then Prednisone (didn't work) then Cyclosporine which I used for two months and it cleared somewhat. I took her off Cyclosporine and within a month it was back totally. I have tried all kinds of creams and at night I put Gold Bond Medicated powder on to keep her from licking. The Zinc oxcide in the powder helps dry it as well. I will now try the zinc oxcide cream and powder at night and continue the Cyclo. although I really hate to take chances on immune supressive drugs; I'll have her blood tested for liver damage after a month. It has been 10 months of drugs and in my opinion she didn't have the fistulas until AFTER the anal gland removal, however, the vet will not admit that and it's not the issue at this point. Any advice is very much appreciated Rita |

| Comments: | I wish I had come across this site sooner. We had to put our beloved Bearden down this past Monday, October 19, 2009. He was 22 months old at the time. We welcomed Bearden into our home as a vibrant, loving, energetic 9 month old puppy just over 1 year ago. He was protection and obediance trained and on his way to bite work as he had quite a drive.
At around 15 months when we switched him from his puppy food to his adult food, we started to notice a change in his bowel movements. One week he would have diarrhea and the next it would be constipation. He was never a great eater and the switch made it even worse. We had no clue what the road ahead would bring. Over the next 5 months, he would be off and on antibiotics and was also diagnosed with having parasites at one point even. It wasn't until 3 days before the arrival of our first child that one of his anal glands expressed itself and we started noticing more of a change in him. About 10 days later after bringing our first child home from the hospital, I got the call from the vet with news I wasn't ready for - perianal fistulas. We started treatment with cyclosporine the next day, and that lasted for just over a month. When Bearden started losing weight, we went back to our vet and got a referral to the Vet Hospital at University of Georgia just up the road. He went from a 95 pound growing boy to a 75 pound anorexic dog. By the time we got from our vet to the appointment at UGA in just under a week, he was down to 71 pounds. They did a full physical, and determined that surgery was not imminent at that point. We started the Tacrolimus at that time along with a change in his diet as well. In less than 2 weeks, he put on almost 10 pounds and was eating anything we threw in front of him during his regular feeding times - something he had never done since we brought him home. The Tacrolimus appeared to be working on the exterior fistulas and the cyclosporine was being continued as well. We thought we had turned a corner. We were wrong. He started to lose weight again, had to be force fed, and anything that previously got him excited didn't seem to matter any longer. "Want to go for a walk?" didn't even elicit his head being lifted. "Want to go in Daddy's car?" barely got a sigh. His toys sat scattered where he last played with them and weren't objects of interest, but obstacles on his path to his crate, which is where he spent most of his time with the door open. "When a dog stops being a dog, it's time" is a saying that my father always said when we had pets growing up. I didn't want to accept it, but we knew what the answer was. Sunday, October 18th found me returning home from weekend drill with the State Guard. When I got home, the weather was nice, so I took him to his place of solace - the back yard. I sat with him curled up in my lap for what seemed like forever just talking to him and enjoying the weather. He seemed to sniff a few things out there but just looked up at me while I gazed back at him. My wife had her time with him as well. That night, he was up most of the night chewing on his favorite nylabone which hadn't been touched in months. I guess he wanted one last hurrah. The next morning, we got ready for the day, waited for the babysitter to arrive so we could deal with this together as he was our first "child" and the first thing that we had taken on as a couple. We were with him until the end, and I held him and looked him in the eyes through his last breaths. May God bless him and all animals who suffer from this affliction. |

| Comments: | What a beautiful web site. Looking at the dogs and remembering our JD brought tears to my eyes.
Our home is not a home without a GSD in it. We are now getting too old to go through this again. Just "maybe" someone will come again to us and ask us to take their dog and then we will have something to think about. |

| Comments: | My wonderful boy, Sonny, is a beautiful 92 lb. German Shepherd, with dark brindle colors. I rescued him from the local animal shelter when he was approx 9 months old. He is extremely loyal and suffers from separation anxiety. He is now 8 years old and started exhibiiting signs of the PFs a few months ago.I took him to one vet who sold me some "burn cream" and proceeded to tell me that the next step was probably tail removal...I immediately got a second opinion, and Sonny has been on a very high dose of Atopica for the last few months. Three days after we started the Atopica treatment, he quit licking his backside, and within one week, the protruding fistulas had disappeared. He is so happy and he thanks me everyday, gobbling the pills like he knows they are what is saving him. Atopica (AND my new Vet) gave me back my wonderful dog.I cannot think where he would be now if I hadn't found a vet who really knew what they were doing! Make sure you ask your Vet about Atopica and check lyour dog constantly! |

| Comments: | I am currently awaiting word from my husband on our 8 yr. old GSD, Montegue. He started bleeding from a spot underneath his tail this morning and so we rushed him to the emergency vet (as today is a holiday). They've been there for 3 hours and have not yet been seen. Worried and stir-crazy, I went online and, sadly, the presentation of perianal fistula sound very close to what we saw.
I can't imagine what dealing with PF could be like, but your story helps me understand what may be to come in our future with our dog. Thank you for posting this. It will help many others. JG |

I took her to a Specialist - they did a colon scope and found ulcers - she has been treated with Baytril & Prednisone and now cyclosporin. I also had them remove her anal glands at the same time. When she had the stitches out I notices these bumps - the Vet said they look like perianal fistulas...I am now putting zinc oxide on them and hoping the cyclosporin works. |

| Comments: | My seven year old neutered male GSD was diagnosed in the fall of '09 with an infection of one anal sac and the potential for perianal fistula to develop. He received a variety of pharmaceutical interventions as well as flushing with an antibiotic. As of this month (5/09) he is diagnosed with Perianal Fistual and an anal sac that may need to be removed. He is currently on a combination of a high dose of Niacinamide and Tetracyline for 30 days in hope of not having to have surgery. This is a protocol my vet researched when she had a dog whose owners could not afford surgery. It worked for that dog who was a Boxer/Pit mix. I am wondering what your experts feel the chances of this working for my dog are given that he is a purebred GSD with some food allergies??? |

I took my shepherd to the Vet and she gave me a diagnosis I did not want to hear I tried the antibiotics and Tacrolimus and it seemed a bit better but when she said I needed to come back for her to see how he was doing I decided to get a second opinion. We tried a different antibiotic and stopped the cream now were back on the cream and more antibiotics. I have taken him off the prednizone because it seemed to be making him a mess but overall I think the first vet was right as much as I don't want her to be, I will hope for the best. I can't stand the thought of losing my best friend so I will keep trying. I'm gratful for the first vets diagnosis even though she wasn't sure at that first app't. I know in my heart she was right! I am grateful for her willingness to try the cream and meds to keep me from putting my friend down because I can't afford the surgery - Zues is back on this regimond and I'm hoping for the best In short thanks to Dr. Brookfield for the right diagnosis I'm sorry I doubted you (its only because I didn't want to believe you) :[ |

| Comments: | Thank You for these helpful stories. Junior (mixed miniature doberman/poodle was diagnosed with PF's in January 2008, nine months ago. We caught it late, and though he lost one of his anal sacs and part of his spinchter muscle, we found some relief with amoxicillan. Thankfully he is able to deficate without pain and we have noticed improvement in his stool (his ability to deficate has improved and the size of his stool is better than it used to be - in large part to a better and more regular diet than ever before, along with omega 3 fish oil to his meals). He had had one surgery to close 2 fistulas that had improved (filled in) on there own, however we are still experiencing new 'holes' on the surface of his skin (the beginning of new fistulas?.. or the breakdown of necrotice skin from the orginal damage done? we don't know). We are going back to the vet tomorrow to have our regular monthly assessment and to ask about trying cyclosporine.
Thank You again for this site which has given us more hope and encouragment. |
