Can we get One Sporting ticket for me & one Catch & Keep for John, as I think if he catches a fish he would like to take it home for tea.
What Flies are working well at the moment, we will be coming early Friday Morning

Comments:This was my first time fishing at Clegg Hall, and what an experience.........On arrival at Clegg Hall the welcome we had was fantastic, very helpful & friendly.
I have been Fly Fishing for many years and have travelled to various locations, I must say that Clegg Hall is up there with the best of them, I really enjoyed my time there and caught 16 rainbow trout (my personal best of 12.5lb)
I highly reccomend Clegg Hall and will definately be visiting agin very soon. Gary.

Comments:I fished Clegg Hall for the first time last week (18/06/2009) and had a packed day of one take after another (mainly on an emergerging Klink Hammer). The thing I really enjoyed about this water, and gives it an edge over others, is the fish fight like fury and go like the clappers. This place is well stocked and managed, good value for money, and with a really friendly welcome. The only downside is the narrow access road, but once you carefully navigate that, the fishery is like an oasis at the other end.

Comments:Long time since my last visit. Nothing much changed, fish still moving all over. The ticket office has been cleaned up and given a lick of paint but the greeting is still cheerful anf the tea and coffee still flows. The fishing was hard until my collegues and I used a "new fly" which worked very well with the fish taking it hard and fighting well. It turned an average day into a good one. Very noticable that the weed problem of previous years is not there at the moment. Fish are as usual in tip top condition

Comments:I am new to fly fishing and was a bit apprehensive on arrival. To be greeted by the owner who asked "Fancy a brew?" was not what i expected, but set the trend for the whole day. I felt welcome and relaxed; sipping tea and being introduced to the world of fly fishing with great patience.
I was then offered the chance to fish with one of the regulars who spent about an hour patiently offering advice as i untangled my line and stood om my fly.
The waters are not too big to be intimidating, and whilst there you feel a million miles from the hubub of modern life. The setting is idillic. Did i catch any fish? - as it happens - the thing is - well.......
All i can say is its not all about catching fish - it was a great day.
For the beginner, this is the place to start, you don't even need a rod, just turn up and the staff will do the rest. Also judging by the standard of the regulars i would suggest it is pretty good for the more experienced too. Just a lovely way to spend a day!! Thanks Clegg Hall - see you soon - tight lines and all that.

Fly casting takes time to learn and apart from my instructor other fishermen were keen to give me hints there is a nice family atmosphere at Clegg Hall And I look forward to many more day's fishing there I also landed two rainbow trout on my first session so went home with a grin which stayed all the way home.

Comments:I visited Clegg Hall on Saturday 11 April for the first time during a trip to see friends over Easter. Having chosen the venue after reading comments on the site, I was not disappointed. I fished throughout the afternoon in bright conditions and caught some excellent fish on a variety of flies. Fish were showing everywhere and it appeared that everyone was catching. The owner was very friendly and helpful and the fishery is extremely well planned and maintained. As a visitor, I was made very welcome and spoke to several of the regulars, who were equally as helpful. I would strongly recommend this venue and look forward to a return visit - hopefully before next Easter ! I had no problem with the access road and drive a car not a 4 x 4. Thanks for a great day and good luck.

while i was fishing mike the manager first made me a brew then it was off to the task of filling the pot holes in down the lane mike was still doing this when i left so come on people this is one venue you should fish every week the fish are there the warm frendly atmosphere is there and a not so bumpy lane up to the fishery

I was reassured today to see that the lane was actually being resurfaced!! I( am not sure how long it is likey to take but once done - Clegg Hall should be a more attractive propositon than it has been in the past ie no need to have a Sherman Tank to negotiate the pot - holes....

Comments:Visited CH again last Tuesday and found Ice over both lakes. There were one or two spots fishable but it was hard work. Its good to have a challenge somedays and this day was one of them. By lunchtime there was lots of free water but it was still hard work. The fish were topping infrequently but most were taken on the bottom using either a bloodworm or Buzzers. At the end of the day I took 9 rainbows and another good Brownie. I also had the pleasure of fishing alongside Andy Kitchenor who is the MD of The Essential Fly. Andy also found conditions were hard. Both lakes were full to overflowing but the weather spoilt things. The wind was bitter and there were frequent fine mizzley showers-still it didn't spoil our day. The fish caught were again in tip top condition and faught well.

Comments:Another fine day at CH. Cold was an understatement and Ice was prevalent until lunch time. Fishing was slow but the fish were there. Took a nice brownie about 3lbs in great condition and eventually retired at 3-30pm taking 9 rainbows on what proved a hard day. Nice change. It was good to see a few new faces on the water as well.

Comments:Last Wednesday saw yet another visit to Clegg Hall. It was the first of the New Year, the water now being open again after the severe frosts. On arrivel I noticed the lack of surface action and felt that it would be a great day. I was right. Three casts Three fish!! what a start. My collegue struggled until the afternoon having caught only one fish and dropping two. I moved onto the small lake and continued catching there. I changed tactics and went onto a Fritz under an indicator and ended the day with 31 fish with my collegue ending the day with 7. Hopefully I will be back next Tuesday to enjoy this most pleasant fishery

Some others were taken using a Red Arsed buzzer at about 3ft down. Some fish were moving just under the surface and all of them went like rockets, What a great days fishing. The weather was good also. Just at the moment the water is almost perfect and the fish are obliging. Clegg Hall is back to its best. Come on and join the fun!!

Comments:Happy New Year to all readers. Today was the first day that I was able to get to my favourite fishery since Christmas. I christened my new Greys G-Tec rod and landed 31 fish. Most of them were taken on a Black and Green Fritz suspended beneath an indicator at about 7 ft depth. The rest were taken on two red arsed buzzers one at three feet and the other at 7ft. I only fished at two places, one on the big lake and the other on the small one, My collegue fished all over caught one fish, dropped a couple and then joined me on the small lake and fished with a similar Fritz to me and caught fish quite regularly until we couldn't see any more. All the fish went like rockets and when they were returned they swam off strongly. In all a very satisfactory day out. Cant wait till next time!!

It was cold and windy but no ice or frost and the fish were obliging. My friends and I took 9 fish each and lost quite a few as well. The best of the day was a 7lbs Rainbow but I ran it a close second with a perfect Brownie of about 3lbs. All the fish faught well and those released swam away strongly to fight again another day. Also a bonus was to meet Andy Kitchenor of "The essential Fly" company. Andy had also taken a few fish when we arrived and he continued to catch untill he went home later in the afternoon. Christmas greetings to all who read these entries and tight lines for 2009

Comments:First time out to CleggHall Fisheries, Rochdale, a beautiful looking water as I ventured out in 7 degree's mid December hard core fisherman style.

A sheltered water in areas providing a good degree of tree cover, ideal for fishing on the drop using black weighted buzzers & Cats whisker flies on the floating line, 12ft leader and watching for any movement on the floating line. This is a great method for catching here taking up to 15 fish to 2.5lb on the drop providing brilliant entertainment and even had a member of staff bring out a hot cup of tea that I could get use to!
Fishing as good as this in December should encourage more anglers to get their lines out in the colder months as the sport was super today, at times 5 chucks - 5 fish. Fishing across the ripple using short retrieves did well also.

Another plus here is not a single snag in 5 hours and thus no lost flies, and no line wastage, other lakes take note. All in all, great value and excellent sport. The track down to the lake as with many excellent fisheries I have frequented needs major repairs.

There were 10 swans on the lakes and they looked very impressive. By 11 am we had cought nothing so we had a brew with Mike, the fishery manager, after which we returned to fishing. At 3pm we were so cold that we decided to call it a day and the end result was 4 browns and 9 rainbows to me and 2 rainbows to Dave my fishing collegue. The lakes are full to the brim and things are promising for a great back end.

Comments:Yet another page in my diary. Today was the first time for months that the lakes were not exploding with rising fish. They were there just under the surface and for the first time for ages deep down as well. It took a while to catch the first fish and then I caught steadily throughout the day ending up with 30 trout and 1 perch. The iflux of cold water has worked wonders and the fish seem to be moving well all over both lakes. My collegue Ged struggled a bit but still managed to land over 12 fish. We were joined for an hour or two by our Lancashire "Top of the water" fisher man Ricky Nuttal who again showed us how to catch fish from the top. He also missed more that he caught for a change. Clegg Hall is at last awakening to the great back end fishery of the last couple of years and manager Mike is beginning to get to terms with everything. I think that the back end has now begun and it will continue right through the months until we see "Summer"!!next year. The signs for a terrific winter period are here. Come on and join us for some great sport. C U on the water

Comments:Went to CH again today after a long break. The weather was fowl to say the least but despite the wind and rain I managed to hook and land 9 fish. There were a few on the surface but I took all my fish at about 8.5ft deep. The weed is now dying back and pretty soon the fish will come on the feed with a vengance. I have never seen as much water coming into the lakes, maybe that has added some energy to the fish. They were, as usual, in good condition and the larger ones went like rockets. Hopefully it wont be long before I get back again.

Comments:I went to CH on Monday and found it very hard work. The fish were about but just what were they feeding on? I did eventually get a three fish hook up with one rainbow and two perch on damsel nymphs on a slime line. I wasn't satisfied with this catch so I went back again yesterday and found that Mike had been weed cutting. Because there was no real wind there were large rafts of weed on the lake and the fish were under and around it. It was impossible to fish it unless you used an indicater and I did this using very small buzzers and the occasional damsel nymph and small blood worm. This resulted in some lost fish and the end result was that I caught over 12 fish whilst others struggled with one or two fish. Role on winter!! No weed and hungry fish. The biggies were showing all day. They are there you've just to catch them.

Comments:I went to my favourite fishery again yesterday and had a hard days fishing. The fish were showing all over the lakes and were preoccupied on something which I could not find in my fly box. I did however complete my first treble- a rainbow and two Perch on the same cast. I was fishing a slime line with three different patterns of Damsel nymph and nearly lost my rod with the viscious take. There were plenty large Blues around but they were not in anything I offerred. I'll be back on Wednesday to try again before the hot weather takes over.

Comments:I went to Clegg Hall Yesterday to see the new stock being introduced, and I was not disapointed. There were some excellent fish put in ,amongst them were some large Blues and one fantastic Brownie about 8-9lbs. I didn't take any tackle with me so I used Mikes for an hour or two loosing one and being smashed uo by something large which set off like an express train before my line parted. Such is life. The water level is up and with the excellent fish stocked the next few days should show great improvement if the weather settles down.

It is very mush a sporting water which can be challenging to catch fish. This of course adds to the interest. I highly commend it as an excellent fly fishing venue.

I feel that this is another method of reporting on the fishery and not just a site for me and Tom Brownbill to exercise our own experiences. It's easy enough to use and it is a method of promoting a great Local fishery. Come on folks just a few words after a visit. It only takes a few moments and its your comments on what you have found on the day. Why not give it a go?

Comments:Due to the weather I only went to CH late in the afternoon yesterday and I was rewarded for the effort. It was extreemley windy but I caught a great Brownie about 3.5lbs, three blueies and six rainbows all in the space of 4 hours. The wind obviously stirred up the water and the fish and even though it was not very comfortable the fishing was good. Despite the weather there was a good number of anglers present which shows that the fishery is growing in popularity. Yet again I look forward to my next visit to this great little water.

Comments:Yesterday saw another visit to my favourite fishery. The weather was just as required and fish were rising all over both lakes. What were they taking?? Anything small and Black but just on or under the surface. It was hard going. Just one of those days. Lots of fish dropped off only a few landed- no biggies and lots of anglers for a change. The water is clearing, the hatches are getting more prolific and I am missing more and more fish. This fishery is still great and will only get better!!!

Read comments about the access road and these have been blown out of proportion-ok its a little bumpy but you are travelling up a dirt track not the A58-just take your time.
Fishery location is almost second to none with the fishing challenging at times, which is what i want,if you want a fish a chuck go to a stock pond!Staff very helpful and easy to talk to and things will go stronger and stronger.
See you there soon.

Comments:Yet another day at CH. Weather hot and sunny and contrary to usual habits fish feeding on the surface all the day long. There were large hatches of Sedges and small black flies throughout the day but catching the fish was hard. Once again the small buzzers worked reasonably as did the all white buzzer, which accounted for three good Bluies. Alarge white boobie minkie on the top raised a few fish but I missed them so fished the same on a sinking line and hooked six fish also dropping another two. It was hard work but again a great day on a great water.

Successful flies were small- size 16's so needless to say I dropped a lot off as well. The large lake was stuffed with fish feeding throughout the day on hatches of small black flies and buzzers. It was some of the best sport that i have had for a long time. can't wait to get back again

Comments:Yesterday saw yet another visit to my favourite fishery. As we arrived I noticed action over the small lake with fish taking something from just under the surface. Using my bloodworm I caught one fish and missed another then had nothing for over two hours. After lunch I altered my method and fished much shallower, using small buzzers and missing takes left right and centre. I then mastered the idea and began to hook fish, landing five and missing twenty or more before they went off again. There is plenty of food in these lakes which all helps to make the fishing more competitive. So far the resident fish are in front!!! Can't wait for my next visit.

This place will grow from strength to strength. With regard the road,it is rough so drive slowly! That will be fixed it time anyway I go for a days fishing not road testing.Match the fly of the moment and you can catch fish all day. Awesome natural venue. Well done all concerned.

This was followed by another dozen fish again some of which shed the hook, it was just one of those days. My friends, Ged and Dave, who were also fishing lost fish too. Ged losing one estimsted to be well into double figures. Well thats how it goes. Win some, Loose some!! I was met by John who could not do enough for me and he and Mike, who had come in for a bit of practice, were brilliant. They helped me carry my tackle around the lakes and made a cold and windy day most pleasurable. Conditions were not great but by the end of the day I had landed 6 trout to about 3 lbs all of which were in top condition. If things continue as they are we will be in for a great season. I have yet to catch a Clegg Hall Brownie but I know that others have done. Looking forward to my next visit

Comments:3 things, 1 sort out the road, its a disgrace. 2 sort out the stocking policy, there is a serious problem with most of the fish ive seen caught there recently, some kind of deformities in the fish making them twisted in shape and some serious skin problems. 3 sort out the prices, pennine is cheaper better quality and bigger fish and better managed all round.

If it was a bit cheaper for a sporting ticket we would go more often, so in the long run the fishery would gain.
The weed is still a problem if you don't keep the line moving though.
Good luck

There is a great picture gallery showing some of the fasntastic fish that are stocked at Clegg Hall. An up to date web site will ensure continuity of news at the water and this will lead to more visitors to the site and to fish the waters, where management are always willing to help. Comments:I beleive the fishery has potential, but I have to agree with previous comments that the price is HIGH.
When you consider that Pennine is only 3.5 miles away and holds bigger, more fish and has better facilities than Clegg Hall the prices don't make sense.
Having said all that I do like the fishery and the two people who where in attendance on both occasions when I fished were very friendly and pleasant.
One final comment the access down the path needs some attention.
Please don't consider me too critical, my comments are meant to be purely construtive

Trout Fishery . The mare I read it the more it appears to apply to Pennine Fishery where I believe they no longer have night fishing. There is a drive you have to go up to get to the fishery and there is a gate at the bottom. I can and will assure Jacko that he will only get a cheerful and respectful welcome at Clegg Hall by the owner and his staff at any time.

I took two fish and changed flies and lines throughout the afternoon and the only other offer |I got was when something took my indicater and I'm sure swore at me!!. The weather was fine and there was quite a stiff breeze blowing all day. Derek the owner was on hand to give advice and he did nothing but appologise for the lack of bites!!. THAT'S NOT his fault. There is so much natural feed about at this time so we must expect fishing to be hard. That's what it's all about!! This is a great fishery and the staff are all helpful. Can't wait to get back again

Fish were rising all over both lakes and before long I had missed a couple of half hearted takes. Derek, the owner came and spoke to me and after taking his advise I changed tactics and caught my first Blue of the day, shortly followed by a takeable rainbow and numereous Perch. After lunch things changed again and I fished a sink tip and a Minkie boobie and bang I caught my first Clegg Hall doublefigure fish. A beautifully conditioned Rainbow. after that I caught a few more rainbows before we had to call it a day. Cant wait to get back again!!

Surprisingly though the fish weren't feeding on the small black gnats that were all over the water. it was one of those days, a nice breeze causing a gentle ripple , fish topping every where but not many taking the fly. It took 6 hours to land four fish, but who cares, this is a great fishery and who wants to catch fish constantly on every visit? The fishery is growing in popularity and the quality remains the same. But 4 hours later 9 fish landed only two under 3lbs,the rest were 6,7,8,pounders and one at 13 plus,my mate john had a simalar bag including two doubles,we estimated a bag between us of 120 pounds.Could this venue be the new top big fish water of the north west?

Comments:25.1.2007. Yesterday was my first visit to the fishery. There was a cold northerly wind and conditions were far from comfortable. Believe it or not the fish were present anf feeding spasmodically. In this weather you have to keep moving to find the fish and when we found them they were well worth suffering from the cold. I have not seen fish of this quality for a long time, fit , sleek in tip top condition and faught like Tigers!! It will not be long before we are back again for more of this promising fishery. There is a good management system in place. I wish you every success for the future

Very good venue, obviously designed by a fly fisherman for fly fishermen! The place is full of good fish. Staff are very friendly and welcoming, the other fishermen (and women!)also move around the venue like they should at a proper fishery, and don't just plonk themselves in one hotspot - I would suggest making this a rule.
Only room for improvement is the access road which is a bit potholed ( I wouldn't recommend taking the Porche!).
