Comments:Hi All,

I posted a request for some info on the BUTTERWORTH family who were in Padiham, LAN, ENG and when I was checking to see what the the latest posts were I saw that a few people were interested in the BUTTERWORTH name. Below are a few bits of info that I have collected over the years of my research.

If anyone has the ability to lookup the Padiham, LAN, ENG Parish Registers I would very much appreciate it.

My 4 x Great Grandfather was Edward BUTTERWORTH (a draper in Trowbridge, WIL, ENG) and I know he was born c1756 but I have never known were. Recently I have found on the LDS Pilot Family Search Site an Edward BUTTERWORTH bp 1756 (no day or month) in Padiham, LAN, ENG. (There are very few Edward BUTTERWORTH on the IGI in this time period). Now this tied in well with information that my father had told me (that had been pasted down through the family) that the BUTTERWORTH Line were related to a Joseph who was a MP and a Law Book publisher and they were also related to a lot of Callithumpian ministers (in Australia and New Zealand this is used to refer to some unspecified nonconformist religious sect. This may be derived from the other meaning given in the English Dialect Dictionary of "a group of social reformers"). In fact they were Particular Baptist and 5 sons born to Henry BUTTERWORTH (a blacksmith of Goodshaw, Rossendale, LAN, ENG) and 4 of these sons became Particular Baptist ministers. Both these things are connected to this Line in Padiham as far as I can tell from a Tree I built up from IGI and other information I have found on the Web.

Henry BUTTERWORTH bp 27 Feb 1726, Bolton le Moors, LAN, ENG (was the son of Henry the blacksmith mentioned above) m. Elizabeth WHITACRE and according to the LDS Pilot Family Search Site they had 7 children bp in Padiham, LAN, ENG between 1745 and 1761. The children were: -
Alice bp 1745
Mary bp 1748
John bp 1750
Henry bp 1753
Edward bp 1756
Robert bp 1759
Thomas bp 1761.

I would be extremely grateful if you could confirm these baptisms and supply any other information that might have been written in the registers. If you could also confirm the marriage that would also be great as it appears to be after the first few children were born if the info I found on the Web is correct (or it could be that Henry married twice).

Thanking you.

Talk to you later.

Best regards,

Ian Butterworth.

BUTTERWORTH
The surname BUTTERWORTH is locative in origin, that is, it derives from the place where the original bearer lived or held land. In this case the name derives from BUTTERWORTH, an ancient division of the parish of Rochdale, Lancashire. The word comes from Old English and means "enclosure where butter is produced". Early instances on this name in records include Reginald de BUTERWORTH living in the reign of Henry II (BAINES' History of Lancashire); John BUTTERWORTH, of BUTTERWORTH in 1595; Alice BUTTERWORTH, of Rochdale in 1587, listed in "Wills at Chester (1545-1620). From the original village in Rochdale the name has become widespread in Lancashire and even travelled to the colonies. Bearers of the name BUTTERWORTH were among the founders of the New World. James BUTTERWORTH, a weaver, is listed among the passengers of the ship Concord which sailed to Virginia in 1698; Judith BUTTERWORTH of Middleton in Lancashire, sailed from Dublin on the ship Lamb for Virginia in 1698 as an indentured servant for five years; Nicholas BUTTERWORTH aged 19, was similarly bound to Mr. William PARK in Virginia in 1700. A distinguished bearer of the name is John BUTTERWORTH (b. 1918), Vice-Chancellor of the University of Warwick.

David BUTTERWORTH: -
"Butterworth was one of the 4 townships which made up Rochdale (the valley of the River Roche), and it was the southeast part of the town. It is mainly small rounded hills and rough moorland, with higher hills of the Pennines Yorkshire to the east. I have been told that BUTTERWORTH means "hamlet in the hills" for the "worth" means a farm or dwelling, and "Butter" is the plural of "Butt" which is a hill in the old Lancashire dialect. My great-aunt used to say that there were more BUTTERWORTH's in Rochdale than stars in the Milky Way." "There are almost 1,000 BUTTERWORTH's listed in the Telephone Directory for that area of northeast Manchester. Rochdale is 12 miles NE of Manchester." "The BUTTERWORTH who was Lord of the Manor in the Middle Ages owned a BUTTERWORTH Hall in Butterworth, but the last building on this site was pulled down about 75 years ago."

Geoff HAIGH wrote: -
The origin of the name BUTTERWORTH. Although it did say that the name also came from Yorkshire where it was believed to have developed independently. When you scan through the International Genealogical Index ® there are many, many entries from the area of Butterfield at Rochdale.

Trevor BUTTERWORTH wrote: -
The area near to Rochdale which was called Butterworth, - or rather a hamlet in Butterworth, called Ogden. As you probably know, Butterworth is no longer the name given to the area, although Butterworth Hall still exists. On a visit to the British Museum last year with my son, he excitedly called me to a display wherein a silver arm of about 4 inches off a Roman statue was on display with the legend 2 found at Butterworth. There are the remains of a Roman fort just over the hill in Saddleworth at Castleshaw (the Castleshaw Valley is on the Pennine fringe between Huddersfield and Oldham), so I guess they were pretty busy around the area.

My brother and I travelled up from the South of England to visit Ogden, and although the old Baptist church, which served that small community, is no longer there the old graveyard is and it is almost exclusively BUTTERWORTH's! In the older censuses the place of birth for Lane Bottom and Ogden residents was given as the generic 'Rochdale'. Whilst these Baptist forebears of mine could celebrate the birth of children with naming ceremonies, and have their funerals at the Baptist church, all marriages had to be done in a Church of England. Finding them and relating them to the other records is making it a bit difficult to trace back!

We enquired of: ISU@libraries.manchester.gov.uk about marriage records for the Rochdale area for the early 1800's. They replied, "At that time, owing to HARDWICKE's Marriage Act of 1754, all marriages in the Rochdale area would have had to have been performed at St Chad's, the ancient parish church of Rochdale. There are other old churches in the Rochdale area (which at that time would have been chapelries of St Chad's), such as Holy Trinity, Littleborough, and St James, Milnrow. However in both cases, although we have christening registers commencing around 1715. The marriage registers start in 1838 - there are not even marriage registers predating 1754. The St Chad registers are on microfilm." All absorbing stuff, but at the end of the day, as the Rochdale poet Edwin WAUGH put it (drawing attention to the proliferation of the BUTTERWORTH name around the Rochdale districts):
"Some liken to wrangle o'er nowt but a name
And who were their Mams and their Dads.
But Gentle or Simple it all comes to't same -
We're all Johnny Butter'oth's lads."

Margaret DRAPER wrote: -
I was about to email you the following information which was in Britain's "This England" magazine of Sep 2000 in the Letters section:
"Sir, Among the 'English Surnames' (Winter 1999 edition) I noticed my own name, BUTTERWORTH - but not with the explanation - I expected. In the early 1900's my grandfather was a vicar near Rochdale in Lancashire and while I was still very small, explained to me how he believed the name had become established. During the 12th century our ancestors identified themselves by quoting their point of origin, which was a village on a ford over the River Buit in Holland, a tributary of the Schelde. "de BUITEVOORDE" was unfortunately too much for early Lancastrians and it was soon Anglicized to its present form. Was my grandfather telling tall stories or is this the correct explanation of why the vast majority of those named BUTTERWORTH hail from Rochdale?

Comments:I've been researching my Butterworths and have gotten stuck at my Great Great Grandfather. I know his name was James Butterworth and he was supposedly born in Bolton. He was described by my Grandfather as an 'engineer'. Trouble is, I don't think he ever married my GG grandmother Annie Walter. There is no marriage certificate. Oh his son and daughter's baptismal certificates and another daughter's birth certificate he is described as a mechanic. The only James Butterworth, engineer born in Bolton was married to someone else, but as they lived very close to each other, I suspect a bit of bigamy (or secret family) going on. GG Grandfather never appears on the censuses living with Annie Walter and there is no birth cerficate for my G Grandfather James Walter Butterworth. If James Butterworth of Bolton is my GG Grandfather then the family goes back to Oldham, and who they are is anyone's guess. The IGI gets very ambiguous and there are so many Johns and Elizabeths.

SO... If you're out there reading this and you know anything about the elusive James, engineer or Mechanic, possibly of Bolton, please let me know. Given that it's my surname, I'd really like to go back with it as far as I can.

Thanks very much

Comments:My 4 x Great Grandfather was Edward BUTTERWORTH who according to the 1821 census of Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England was born between 1751 and 1761 and he died between 1821 and 1833.He was a Linen Draper in Trowbridge.

On 2 Aug 1803 he married Hester COGSWELL (1776-1833) in Staverton (a Chapelry of Trowbridge) and they appear to have had about 7 children but as far as I can find only 2 survived to adulthood.
1. My 3 x Great Granduncle Edward BUTTERWORTH (1806-1878) married Elizabeth HAYWARD (1811-1878) on 31 May 1832 in Trowbridge and they had 3 daughters (none of whom married).
2. James Henry BUTTERWORTH (1810-1841) married Ann SIDNELL (1798-1893) but I cannot ID a date or place of marriage. James and Ann had only the one child Henry George BUTTERWORTH (1835-1888) and the Line comes forward in time from there.
Both Edward and James were drapers (Edward in Trowbridge and James in Melksham, Wiltshire, England. After James died Ann continued to run the business and later on Henry entered the business as well.

I am trying to find out more about my 4 x Great Grandfather Edward BUTTERWORTH.

One possible match could be Edward BUTTERWORTH b. 1756 to Henry BUTTERWORTH of Padiham, Lancashire, England.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks.

Both are so-called from the Olde English Butere - ie. Butter plus enclosure worth. Although the surname is recorded from a very early date both most likely developed independantly of one another.

In 1840 our great great grandfather John (born 1805 died 1882) and his wife Jane (Whitehead - born about 1807, died about 1867) migrated with their children George (1832), James (1834), Mary Alice (1836), Jane (1837), and baby Alfred (1839) over the moors and down through the wild valleys of Saddleworth to Micklehurst, where they set up home and found employment. Many years later, after their move to Greenfield, baby Alfred was to become the father of Sarah Ann(1863), Arthur Nelson (1865), John (1868), Samuel (1869 - grandfather of Trevor and me), and Jane (1871).

Thus our forebears left the ancestral home where the surname Butterworth was prolific (perhaps being taken, in times long gone, by anyone resident in the Butterworth area) and cut their total dependency on the cotton industry to chance their arm in Saddleworth, where wool was equally as important as cotton.

They left behind John's younger brother James (1806) who was married to Alice Whitehead (sister of Jane?). James and Alice stayed on in Ogden with their children James (1829), Hannah (1832), George (1834), Edward (1836), Thomas (1838), and John (1840). Two further children came along - Mary (1844) and Martha (1846), before poor Alice died in 1849.

Meanwhile the Micklehurst-based family of John and Jane grew larger, with the addition of Samuel (1840 - emigrated to America in the latter half of the 19C), of John (1844), and of twins Joseph and Mary (1847), before the family moved to Greenfield about 1866. This is where great grandfather Alfred and his wife Eliza settled, where grandfather Samuel was born and where Trevor and I grew up.

Congratulations to the site for bringing together all these family members, and good wishes to all that large family group out there across the world.
