| Comments: | I know this is a long shot. But I am having difficulty locating my ancestors from Bari, Italy. My great-grandfather was Rocco Spinelli who married Anna Martellotti or Martilotti. Not sure of the spelling. Their son, Leonardo, came to the US through Ellis Island on a ship named the ROMA in 1910. He was 28 and sponsored by a Vito Spinelli but we don't know who that is. The manifest says "San Michele, Italy" but I don't think that exists. What does exist is Sammichele which is close to Bari. | Comments: | How shallow my life is as a decendant of Italian ancestors that never left a history, never left a legacy. It came at me quickly when I got the chance to visit Italy recently and knew no one related to me. I was just another tourist close to my routes but never able to identify them.
My grandfather came from the Abruzzi region. I dont know the town. His name was Carlo DeFelice married to Laura his wife. He immigrated to the U.S. through Ellis Island in the 20's. He was a Blacksmith by trade and settled in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY. My other grandfather came from Bari. His name was Alphonse Santamaria and was married to Teresa. They also came through Ellis Island around the same time and here again no history of family. They are both long deceased but it would be nice to know if I have any relatives related to them who still might have families in Italy that remember them? |

All I know is what is in the 1900, 1910, 1920 US census, which shows his dad, Matt arrived here in 1897 and the rest of his family 4 years later. They settled in Hubbard, Oh. The census lists his name as Rock, but I'm sure this is an Americanized Italian name. It may have be LaRocca or La Rock? I'm just today began my research. I read your tips and they should help alot.

His older brother was Carmine, and middle brother, Eugenio, who's son, Rafaele Citrigno, early 80's, is the only Citrigno of our lineage living in Donnici, the family home town. I have recently learned that I have relatives in Canada, from the same area of Calabria, and I am trying to learn how we are related, and IF anyone knows the identities of our common ancestors. For example, I recently met my Citrigno cousins in Hamilton, Ontario, (Fern and Angela Citrigno), and Fern's father, Gennaro Citrigno, also from Donnici, was my grandfather's first or second cousin (his father I think was my great-grandfather's brother). There are Citrigno's in Ontario, Welland, St. Catherines, Port Colburn, who are all somehow related. Does anyone there in Canada know "how"? The Citrigno's in USA (Dayton, Ohio, Columbus, Ohio, Panama City, FL, and Philadelphia area are also distant cousins. Their lineages track back to the villages of Mangone and Paterno Calabra, each only 1-3 miles from Donnici! | Comments: | Hi, I am married to the Ferrato Family. Originally the Ferratos that I know of came from Costenza Italy , province of Calabria. Mr. Domenic Salvatore landed in Canada around the 1930-40"s and settled fianally retiring in Thorold, and passed away in 1991, at the age of 91 years old. His son, Agostino Ferrato came to Canada and married his wife, Maria Trecroce in 1953. Mr Agostino Ferrato is recently deceased (July 29, 2005). They have 3 sons, Sam ( Domenic Salvatore), my husband, Anthony, and Angelo and a daughter named Marisa. Sam lives in Thorold, Anthony lives in Burlington, Angelo lives in St. Catharines, and Marisa lives in Oakville. Just to mention, that Agostino has left behind his older sister, Catherina, who also resides in Thorold, and was married to a Peter Citrigno (now deceased) Catherina is 84 years old.
I'm not sure if this helps, but it is a lineage to the Ferrato Family. It is also know that there are distant relatives of the same name living in USA, Seattle and in Philadelphia. My paternal grandparents, Emilio (or Emidio) and Addorata, came from Civitella del Tronto, though grandma's manifest says she and my uncle were born in Corropoli. Her maiden name was Capriotti. The surname was Ferri and our cousins in Rochester NY still use that but somewhere along the line grandpa changed it to Ferro. His draft registration card says his last residence was Ponzano Eterno, but the last part might have been misunderstood as Teramo...maybe Aterno the river.
