| Comments: | I am a member of a large Texas Latimer family descendant of great grandparents Gordon Albert Latimer and Pearl Wilson Latimer of Galveston County, Texas; circa 1900. Their children were: Douglas Leslie (DL), Lorena, Bess, Paul, Harvey Ray, Jess, Gordon Albert Jr., Leona, Mattie, William Wilson, and Albert, My great, great grandparents were George Williamson Latimer and Sarah Jane Whitsett, and my great, great, great grandmother was Susan Allman of Tennessee was born in 1813. We can trace our Latimer family back to Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia. There is some indication they may have lived in Maryland prior to that. It is Pittsylvania County in Virginia, Mercer County in Virginia, St. Francois County, in Missouri, Hempstead County in Arkansas, then Red River County in Texas, Hill County in Texas, and Cleburne County in Texas before going to Jack County and finally Galveston County. George Williamson Latimer's parents where Milton and Ann Latimer who lived around Hico and Dublin, Texas. The family legend has seven Latimer brothers coming to America from East London, England sometime during the 18th century; however, this has yet to be verified through public record. |

He brought his family to the US about 1840. Robert settled in Missiouri. His children settled in Kansas around 1860. The oldest son Philip Fletcher settled in miami co. KS. I descend from Philip. | Comments: | I also meant to mention that there is a reason that many ancestral names are found in England, Scotland & Wales. In the early days of the British Isles, the people living in the lowlands of what is now Scotland, along with those in England and Wales - before those countries took their separate forms - were called Britons (by the Romans) and Welch or Welsh by the Anglos, Saxons, Danes and other germanic peoples. Many places in those lowlands derived their names from the Welsh, for example, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
When the Romans built Hadrien's wall across the north of "England", they actually divided off the Welsh people living above the wall. It is known that the grandfather of William Wallace travelled north of the wall to visit his son & family. Wallace, himself, was not a highlander and would not have worn a kilt as that was not the dress of lowlanders at that time. [By the way, the statue of "Braveheart" looks like Mel Gibson - not Wallace. It is crude and amateurish compared to the original one higher up the hill. Had William Wallace been the height of the Braveheart statue, he wouldn't have been able to wield his huge sword.) An etymology book says that Latimer (however it might have then been spelled) was the name given to Wrenock ap Merick ("ap" being the Welsh for "son of"). A Latimer went from Scotland to parliament in the 1500s - 1600s. Forms of the name appeared in the Doomdays book. Bishop Hugh Latimer was burned at the stake about 1560 in England. So, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Latimers are found throughout Britain. Apparently, the earliest appearance of the Latimer name in Ireland was in the late 1600s. This ties in with William of Orange and his confliict there. In fact, one of my sources says that Latimers were one of the Huguenot familes still living in Co. Cavan. My Latimers came from Brankhill which is apparently in the south-east of the county, though I've yet to see it on a map. I have a one page copy of the listing of my Latimers from the 1841 census which indicates that they were in Brankhill and apparently it was a fair-sized community. Should William James Latimer happen by this message, please contact me about your possible linage. |

| Comments: | We, too, are said to descend from Bishop Hugh Latimer. But, Bishop Hugh Latimer never married or had children. He did have a brother and, no doubt, cousins, etc.
Latimer is one name used as an example of the varied spelling of family names found of the same person in old records. The same Latimer, it is said, had his name spelled seven different ways. A great many people could not spell, so the person making the record wrote the name they way they heard it Jim L |

| Comments: | I tried to e-mail two persons on this site whose addresses are no longer valid. this is the message I sent:
I am not a Latimer, but my maternal grandfather, William Beatty (1860-1938) of Enniskillen, Fermanagh County, was said to have been a horse trainer for the Latimer family and emigrated with them from Ireland to the (then) Danish West Indies in 1884. If you know any more about the St. Croix Latimers, it would probably help me in tracing my Irish line back overseas. Likewise, any information I have about my grandfather might answer some of your questions. So, if there anyone out there knows more about the Latimers who emigrated to St. Croix, please contact me! Thanks. |

| Comments: | Hi to all fellow Latimers. I thought people might be interested to know that the name Latimer supposedly came to England with the Norman Conquest. One of William the Conqueror's Knights was a Latimer and he was rewarded after the conquest with land bequeathed to him by William in North Yorkshire at Danby. He built a castle at Danby and one nearby at Stainby (nr Stokesley). Sadly both are now in ruins thanks to a certain Mr Cromwell. |

| Comments: | Hello, As far as I know in Philadelphia, James Latimer who had no brothers or sisters, had an only son named James Latimer. This son (James Latimer)had five sons. Therefore these five children had no uncles or aunts as far as they know. Im son of the first born of the five. The whole family still resides in Philadelphia, while I live in california. To my knowledge, no one knows if my great grandfather was born in the united states or abroad or if he had any brothers or sisters. I doubt anyone knows but If someone does contact jbellboy70@hotmail.com . Thanks |

| Comments: | Hello, I am writing to you from Calgary, Alberta. I'm
trying to locate my grandfather, John Baptiste Latimer. My mother never knew her father, the only information I have is the following. My mother was born in Vancouver in 1934. Her father is listed on the birth certificate as 40 yrs., motor mechanic born in Hamilton Ontario. He may have died or just left within two years, as it appears he did not marry her mother. He had a sister who spelled her last name Lattremouille, no first name. She resided in Calgary until her death. I speculate he worked for the railroad as he traveled across country a lot. He most likly went back to Ontario until his death. If this name has any relevance to you I would love to hear from you. |

My father, James Latimer, was born in 1930 and lived in Granard, Co. Longford, Ireland. His father, also James, was also from the area. Although, I was brought up in Co. Laois - further south - I currently reside in Australia, and so it appears that the clan still spreads it wings!! Once again, well done on the web site - truly enjoyable. |

| Comments: | The Latimers were on my mother's side of the family. The
ones I remember as a boy in the l940's were Joe Latimer of Butte, Montana and Homer Latimer who worked in the oil business. Supposedly someone in the family, I was told years ago, traced the Latimers back to l066 in England. Do you if this is true or not? Has anyone gone that far back with the Latimers. Thanks. |
| Name: | Robert Carson Latimer |

| Comments: | My name is Robert Carson Latimer, I was born in
southwestern Manitoba Canada. My father (Robert James Latimer) was born in Spy Hill Sask. Canada b1917. He had two brothers, and a sister. His mother (Lillian Ogalthorpe) died at child birth in 1921. As a result, the children were adopted by other families in the area. So, I have Uncles who have different last names George Milroy, and Frank Taylor ( d1984 ). My father was raised by his aunt (Margret Walker), and kept the family name. My grandfather (Robert Latimer) d1945 aged 55years, to the best of my knowledge immigrated to Canada around 1910. He had two brothers and three sisters that also came to Canada around the same time. James Latimer, Jack Latimer, Margret Latimer (Walker), Mary Latimer (Cameron) and Lee Latimer (did not marry). There was also another brother who came to Canada (Bill Latimer), whom returned to Scotland shortly after WW1 (this is not confirmed). They all settled in the Brandon Manitoba area. My Grandfather remarried in 1937/38 to a widow Ms. Mary Drummond, this union did not produce any children (thank God!! it is confusing enough already with all the different surnames). I was fortunate that I had the chance to talk with some of the people who knew my Grandfather, and got a impression of what kind of a person he was. He was a good horseman, well respected for his wrangler abilities, and training methods. There were several newspaper articiles written about his accomplishments during town/county fairs etc. Should you have any information regarding this branch of the Latimer family, please let me know. If I can answer any questions that you may have, feel free to send them along to me. Thanks |

Latimer who emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 from Derrylin, Co Fermanagh N. Ireland. I have some extended family trees going back to 1735 Kinawley Parish,Co Fermanagh. I have been trying to find descendants of the brothers and sister of Dr James Latimer who died in New York in 1996 aged 93. He was born in St Croix. I believe his brothers (one William) moved to Canada and upstate New York from St Croix. His sister's name was Huldah but I do not know her married name. Would be interested in contacting other descendants from Fermanagh Latimer's who emigrated to USA. |

| Comments: | It was 100 years ago that my mysterious ggGrandfather,
William Latimer (Jr?), passed away from cancer of the liver in Angus, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. At the time of his death he was most likely living at Concession 3, REM e. 1/2 lot 28, in Angus (as he began leasing this property 21st November 1884 from the Canada Company), or he could have been living at Concession 3, lot 30 , also in Angus (his wife and my ggGrandmother, Margaret Ludlow Latimer, was residing there at the time of her death on the 1st December 1903). His death record claims that he was 77 years old, but his grave marker at lot 2, grave 62, in Angus Union Cemetery, reads that he was 73 years old at the time of his death. He never could read or write, and the earliest record of his existence that I have been able to locate is from the 1861 Ontario census. William and his family resided and farmed the land at Concession 1, lot 12, commonly known as 6349 County Road 15, RR1, Everett, Ontario, Canada (just south of Base Borden, in Simcoe County). That record has his birth noted as Canada West, and the date of his marriage in 1845. He was known to have been a cabinetmaker, a farmer, and also a butcher. William and Margaret had 8 children; Ellen (Latimer) Crosbie Dixon, George Latimer, Jane (Latimer) Walker, Richard Latimer, Francis "Frank" Latimer, William Latimer III (my Ggrandfather, Susan (Latimer) Stribble, and Mary Ann (Latimer) Walkinshaw. Brown (1784-1846) Latimer, who were born in Ireland and came to the US in 1805. I have little information on them before they left Ireland. William was first married to Mary Kenedy (Kennedy?), and they had three sons in Ireland. The sons apparently did not accompany them to the US.
