When you came into our little studios for the Mitch Winehouse's News of the World X Session, I am afraid to say I was very new to mixing music and knew next to nothing really. You were very patient with me and gave some great advice which I thoroughly misunderstood and failed to act upon. Every time we do a music session now I remember you standing behind me suggesting "more bass!" and me stupidly turning up the low EQ! My name is Vernon Hiller and I live near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1907, my great grandparents along with their daughter and 3 sons immigrated from Leyton, England (now part of London). My great grandfather Matthew Henry Hiller left behind two sisters and two brothers. The brothers' names were George Hector Hiller and Francis Hiller, and the sisters were Helen D. Hiller, and Mary Edith Hiller. They also had a cousin named Rudolph Hiller. I don't know how familiar you are with your own geneology, but having found your name on the internet, I thought I might ask if any of these names sounded familiar. My grandfather Matthew Robert Hiller (Bob) and his brother Albert Edward Hiller (Bert) both fought overseas in the First World War. While in England I know they visited some of their cousins, and aunts and uncles, but that is all I know. I also know that my uncle Lloyd Myles whose mother was Beatrice Edith Lily Hiller fought in the Second World War and also visited some of his cousins while in England. If you could look into some of these names or speak with someone in your family who might be more familiar with your geneology and get back to me, it would be greatly appreciated. I have researched my family tree extensively to the point of our first known Hiller; George Thomas Hiller born 1827 and died Sept 1882, but beyond that I have no more information or knowledge of what happened to the relatives that stayed in Leyton and never came to Canada. Like so many other people have already mentioned, I’ve only just discovered your web site. I was the tape op (must admit I prefer the phrase “2nd engineer !!! - after all I have got an ego the size of a small planet) at Central in Denmark st at the time of “Save your kisses”. My 5 years at Central was such a great time, entirely due to the constant stream of “marginally insane” and hugely talented people like Ron Roker, Gerry Shury and of course your good self. Again, like many who have left messages in your dream book, I also had no idea of your stunning musical career - but can tell you I am the but of endless, good humoured diner party “digs” like: “you know he worked at the studio that did Save your Kisses for me” I’ve had my stock answer well practised ... “Mmm, you may mock, but, .... it did win us the Eurovision ..... AND on our own turf”. Truly wonderful times. I’ve “drifted” away from the studio proper, into acoustic design, from studio to concert hall, and have even taken a sort of retrograde step into vinyl cutting !, but, Just wanted to say hello (specially as your name comes up in “good old days” conversation at least twice a year) and send you the warmest of wishes.
