Two things, though: 1) I think the French quote before Ch. 32 is better translated as "the spirit of rivalry and disagreement that preserved more than once the English army from defeat". 2) The "white blindness" is myxamatosis, not rabies. Great job, you should expand into other realms of the "Adamsian" (i.e., Richard, there's already enough Douglas- stuff) universe, like Plague Dogs and etc. And I think that what Adams was trying to do is apply his knowledge of animals in order to understand human behavior from a largely unaccessable prehistoric past (good evidence of that is the passage about what winter is like in the rabbit warrens), I think that the Mythic elements in his work is much more important to his works overall goal than you give him credit for. I think Watership Down is not just an adventure tale, nor just a ecological story or even an eccentric form of "War" novel, but forms a sort of Myth on the scale of The Illiad, or the Odssesy (misp.). This may also explain the quotes at the chapter headings. People in the future, if English language literary culture survives, will quote Watership Down the way he quoted the earlier works. |
