Comments:Having known two people who now appear on the Roll of Honour I appreciate the sacrifice of all these officers. I have now retired but still think of my mate from training school, Chris, who was killed in Nottingham before he had finished his first year of duty. Comments:It is 3 years ago today that my elder son, Richard Patrick Gunn, was killed while on duty with Surrey Police. He was 29 years old and due to marry his fiancée Laura exactly 7 weeks later, on 2nd May 2004. It is a loss I shall never get over - and one I am still learning to live with. Now there will always be a huge void in my life - previously filled by the wonderful, loving, caring, amusing person that was Richard. God bless you son, may you rest in peace. All my love, Dad.

Comments:It's the start of a new year, but certainly not a happy one. My precious husband and soul mate Ryan Hunt was killed on the 25th May 2006 in Doncaster while on duty. Life is unbearable, I'm lost and heartbroken without him. Never imagined that Ryan would be taken away so soon, he was only 31 and we had our whole lives ahead of us. I thought Ryan was invincible, so strong and heathy, nothing would ever happen to him and we would live happy lives together for a long, long time. Recently i was reading a cops newsletter and the following passage really summed life up for me. 'We say that the hour of death cannot be forecast, but when we say this we imagine that hour as placed in an obscure and distant future. It never occurs to us that it has any connection with the day already begun or that death could arrive this same afternoon, this afternoon which is so certain and which has every hour filled in advance". Marcel Proust. Before Ryan was taken away I held the views in the above passage as does everyone. I now know different, death is not something that happens only to other people. This roll of honour proves this, just seeing how many brave people have lost their lives reminds us of our own mortality. I no longer fear death, I cannot wait for the day that I am reunited with my precious soul mate Ryan. Love you always Rye. Your heartbroken wife, Claire.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Comments:Ten years have passed since my husband Stephen died, his two daughter are now grown up without him and its been very hard in lots of ways. But now his name is included in the roll of honour and its very heart warming even after all this time. We just get on with our lives and still talk about him, how funny he was and they can remember small things because they were only six and eleven years of age. This seems to happen to the nicest of people. Thankyou Tony Rae.

Comments:Newsletter number 5 received today and sad as it always is to read, that feeling was much more severe on reading of the death of Jack aged only 11 years and son of Tony Rae. Words are meaningless and will bring no comfort to Tony and the members of the Rae family, but be assured my sincere sympathy and prayers are with you all at this awful time. Jack was not a police officer but has a father whose efforts in compiling the Roll of Honour cannot ever be fully appreciated by all of us in ensuring none of us ever forget colleagues and friends who have died whilst carrying out their duty. We will not forget young Jack as well.

Comments:You can shed tears that I have gone or you can smile because I have lived. You can close your eyes and pray that I'll come back or you can open your eyes and see all I have left. Your heart can be empty because you can't see me or you can be filled of the love we shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember me and only that I have lived or you can cherish my memory and let me live on. You can cry and close your mind, grieve, and turn your back or you can do what I'd want - smile, open your eyes, love and go on. In memory of Richard Gostage We will all miss you xxxx

Comments:Today is my birthday, normally I would spend it with Ryan my precious husband and the best thing ever to happen to me.He would make me open my presents before I went to work passing each one to me,"Open this one first" he would say. He would always save the best one till last. He watched eagerly as I opened each one, just waiting for my reaction. I can just see that beautiful smile looking at me, feeling so pleased with himself. God I miss him so much, he was always there for me, looking out for me, my special soul mate. Ryan passed away on 25th May 2006, he is so desperately missed. I want the other families to know my thoughts are with them, I know it doesn't ease the grief but it may help to know that other people are going through the same pain and you are not alone. Comments:Twenty eight years have nearly passed since 5 officers of the West Yorkshire force were so brutally removed from their families in a coach accident. The point I raise is simple....Why is there no memorial to these officers at or near to the scene of the accident. The families still feel these losses greatly, and the price for a small permanent memorial is small. The roundabout upon which the coach came to rest is still there but has become forgotten by many but not all. I have to pass the place nearly every day and it still manages to trigger a huge sense of loss upon me. Come on West Yorkshire, Honour your forgotten and fallen officers such as my father David Bulleyment and his other police federation representatives who never made it to the conference

Comments:Please excuse this if I have entered it twice. I have just read through the lovely and sad messages on this site for those who have lost their lives. I found the site today and looked in the hope of finding details of my Dads friend on the roll of honour.Dad is 82 years old and was a policeman, police sergeant in the west midlands police force until he retired, and was based in wolverhampton. He often talks of the night that his good friend died on duty, after arresting an individual... he was stabbed to death.I found his name James Stanford and the year was 1965.Seeing his name in black and white was sad...but my Dad will be pleased that he has been honoured on the roll. I then decided to place a message in the guestbook and in doing so, scrolled down the messages and thoughts representing so many lives lost.the numbers are quite overwhelming. I count my blessings that my Dad was not one of the names...many near misses when he was in the force. My heart goes out to all the relatives and a sincere message would be ...God only takes the best. When I find myself eventually at the pearly gates...lost as usual as my sense of direction is terrible...you can bet there will be a British Bobby ready to look after me and show me the way!!!!Dawn Arthrell

I find it so hard to believe that you have gone, you always worried so much about myself and the children and it seems so unfair that you have been taken away from us. One moments carelessness from someone else has left me devastated and alone. I know I have to try and pick up the pieces, but you were always my strength. Now I have been made aware of the Roll of Honour Trust, I am dismayed by the total waste of precious life on our roads, and policemen are no exception. You were truly a very special person, and I will never forget or stop loving you.

Comments:A few months ago there was a couple of nasty articles written about my dad, PC Tony Salt, even more hurtful was that they were based around the people who killed him and how they were 'outraged' that he was included in the National Police Memorial. He was killed on 16th April 1989, just three days before my third birthday. I miss him soo much, I visit his grave nearly everyday and wish that I could see him, even for a moment. All I have now to remind me of my dad are photographs and family stories. my memory is little to none. Time doesnt seem to make it easier, 16 years on all i wish for is to see him smile and hear him say he loves me, a big hug would be nice too. 'But until we meet again dad, I live life for the day and for you.'

My grandfather, Harold Clayton's name is there, a victim of political violence in 1921, he was only 25,his wife was expecting her second child(my mother)when he was killed. For years he lay buried in an unmarked grave, albeit in the section of the cememtery for 'war dead'.M ygrandmother was told no headstone could be erected. Now however, since 2001, his grave is marked, though I had to seek the permission of the War Graves Commission.Harold had a grand funeral with 2 military bands, and a gun carriage for a hearse, but I sure my poor grandmother would have preferred to have had a long married life with him insted. She never re-married. Thank you again for including his name, Alison M Rogers

Comments:I am the younger sister of Inspector Derek Monteith. i know how much he loved and respected the work and the men of the RUC. With much distress he was taken from us in 1990 a void that has never been filled. I personally have taken a little pleasure from calling my youngest son after his uncle and hope that he is as good and honest a man as Derek and as good and supportive a brother as Derek was, my only one. It destroyed both my parents and they craved for the day they would join him again my father just 17 weeks later and my mother in 1996 following a long long illness and a broken heart.

Comments:The death of my brother, Robert, has had the most far-reaching effects on all who knew and, invariably, loved him. Rob (Bob to his colleagues) had five brothers. All miss him terribly and our daily lives seem to have been affected in so many ways. His memorial service was very uplifting and he was spoken of with pride and love by so many police officers. I'm sure all will agree that the biggest gap in their lives is the lack of crazy humour that was just so Robert.

The Roll is testament to the sacrifice made by police officers on behalf of society, and to the work of the Police Roll of Honour Trust in painstakingly compiling the data it contains. Comments:It saddens me greatly to hear about yet another tragic death of a police officer on duty. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and colleagues of PC Ian Broadhurst. I know by personal experience the grief and trauma they are going through. My son, PC Andreas Newbery, was killed whilst on duty earlier this year. We gained much comfort and support from the public and in particular from Police Roll of Honour Trust. It is uplifting to know that police officers who fell in the line of duty will be honoured and remembered by The Trust. Lest We Forget.

Comments:On the opening of this Guestbook I should like to take this opportunity to thank all those connected with the Police Roll of Honour Trust. This site and its contents are very much a work in progress; the Trust has no paid staff, all who contribute are volunteers, mostly with families and jobs to keep them busy. Sadly, as long as our police officers are prepared to risk all in the service of their communities, this work will never be finished. I thank the Trust's Patron, President, Trustees, supporters and volunteers for their hard work, generosity, kindness and encouragement. Your continuing support is essential to the success of the Trust. Finally, let us always remember why this Trust exists and spare a thought, perhaps a prayer, for our fallen officers, their families and friends - Lest We Forget.
