With a birthday inconveniently falling half-way between Christmas and New Year's Eve, I seldom had birthday parties as a child. After all, who would be able to come? Everyone was away or otherwise engaged. Instead, I would opt to have a shopping trip with my mother to FAO Schwarz, followed by dinner at La Fonda del Sol where we would be joined by my father. Either that, OR I would opt to bring two friends to lunch at La Fonda which always ended in blazing candles & sparklers atop my favorite dessert EVER: in the whole wide world: Mexican Candy Cake. This confection consisted of seven different layers of beautiful dark chocolate--chocolate wafer, chocolate ganache, chocolate creme, chocolate mousse, chocolate torte, chocolate icing, and chocolate shavings. Every single one of my birthdays from my 5th to my 14th included La Fonda del Sol and its exquisite Mexican Candy Cake. La Fonda was the only restaurant in NY --if not the non-Central American world--to. recognize chocolate's true origins. In 1970, when we were facing the imminent closure.of La Fonda del Sol, my mother requested--and received-- the recipe for this magnificent dessert. She knew how hard it was going to be for me to have a birthday without it. Yet no one in my family was surprised when the mimeographed recipe turned out to be the chef's last laugh: directions for assembling some sort of German (!) Chocolate Cake.

What an awesome tribute and labor of love your site is.
As a youngster, I enjoyed my trips to La Fonda Del Sol with my parents-I felt so "grown up" ! I'm sure you're aware of the
"new" La Fonda Del Sol open in NYC..

I loved going to La Fonda del Sol and I wish someone would reinvent it and reopen it. It was a fun place to eat, with the open kitchen, and even the bathrooms were beautiful.

Hi there from the V&A Museum in cold grey London (UK)
Have just found your site and it warmed me up no end, not just the visuals of the amazing objects, but also the care you've put into creating it. Good luck

I ran across a La Fonda Del Sol cup yesterday for .49 cents at a local thrift store and just found this website.

Very interesting history! Great website!

http://www.designwinefood.com What a wonderful site...a great visual treat and tribute to one truly remarkable restaurant and New York dazzling moment in time. To those who enjoyed trips to La Fonda de Sol, the website is a miracle of archiving and enthusiasm. It strikes me, more than ever, how amazing this experiential restaurant was -- 50 years before the UK Magazine Wallpaper showed anything like it. Especially enjoyed seeing the Interiors article (with the floorplan), RA catalog, and every little detail that has been lovingly captured for all to enjoy. I hope site visitors will post personal photos they may have taken inside the restaurant, too, during that decade!
cheers,
