My attention was attracted by the name of your ancestor, “Raisa Laptina”, whose name I thought might come from the village “Laptina” in Pskov Oblast. Since my earlier comment, I have found the village on several maps. It is about 5 km NE of the larger place called in Russian Gavry, or in Latvian Gauri, not far from the present Latvian border. One Russian informant tells me that he believes the place is now uninhabited but Google Earth shows either buildings, or the sites of recent buildings, at the location. |

Additional information about my family: My wife Linda passed away on July 10, 2007, Amy, my daughter, and Thomas were married on January 14, 1994 and they have another child in addition to Morgan and Julia. His name is Justin and he was born in December of 2002. David, my son, and Christina have three children - Samantha(named after my father Samuel)born on August 23, 2002, Braden, born on September 29, 2005 and Tyler born on December 13, 2006. |

| Comments: | So far this is the only Greenstien name I have come accross. And I am looking for my great grandfather Nicolias Greenstein. Here are some updated clues, and maybe someone reading this can help me. Around the time of the late 1800's early 1900's in Canada(Alberta or Saskachewan) A woman by the name of Magdelana Eberle(nee:Myer) Either met up with or Married(not sure) Nicolias Greenstein. They had 2 boys. Casper & Piouse(my grandfather) And in time they split up, or he left whatever the case may be, he dissapeared. And for whatever reason Magdelana went back to her previose married name(of her deceased husband Andrew Eberle.) And the 2 boys Magdelana had with this Nicolias Greenstien then took the last name Eberle.
So since Magdelana met Nicolias in Canada, I have no clue as to what country he came from, and the family book I have(that I cant find at the moment)says not much about him. | Comments: | I came across your web site when searching for references to the village where my maternal grandfather was born: Laptina, located in the Abrene region of Latvia that Stalin took away from Lativa, in the mid 20th century, and annexed to Russia. It is in the Pskov Oblast and, in the 1870s when my grandfather was born, was in the Russian Government (province) of Pskov.
I see that you have an ancestor Raisa Laptina, though you spell her last name two different ways on your web site, Laptina and Lapatina. I assume that her last name came from that of the village. The village was, apparently, erased from the map during the collectovization of Soviet agriculture and I have found it on only one map, a secret US military map that I got a look at but of which I could not obtain a copy. Nice web site. A hommage to your very interesting extended family. |

As far as I can tell they are all Christian. However, each family were Polish speaking, observing Polish holidays and being the only Poles in their respective villages. Mother, Maryanna was born 12/8/1904. Father, Ferenc aka Frank was born in Jesenovce 10/7/1902. |
