Autism Connection: Parent of 4 year old - ASD

Comments:
First I would like to let you know how much I appreciate your honesty and courage. As a parent it is very helpful to gather as much information as possible. In reading your essays, I certainly feel more enlightened as to what the future may hold, and be ready to support my son, in any way I can.

Like most parents, my number one wish for my kids is happiness. I would like to hear from you as to what advice you would give parents of a child on the spectrum. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

We live in Puerto Rico and right now we are going through the process of a diagnostic for my 5yo son. So many years wasted trying to find out what was wrong with him. We have two different evaluations; one of Asperger and another of PDD-NOS. Today, we visited a neurologist and she says that he is not autistic only because she asked him some questions, by the way he answered them wrong, and he establishes eye contact althoug is very limited. I read something you wrote and you are very right, people think that because an autistic child speaks and is very funtional he can't be autistic. When people see my child for the first time, it is hard to beleive he is on the autistic spectrum. You have to spend a lot of time with him to notice some of his characteristics.

You are an inspiration to us because now I'm sure that my child can have a very functional live and be all that he wants to be.

I want to thank you for sharing yourself. I want to learn about how someone with autism feels and thinks of themselves and others, it is very helpful to me. I wish you much more success and note that you have had many successes already.

Autism Connection: Teachers Aide

Comments:
I think your website is really awesome. I work with a young lady as a one on one aide for the past 5 years. Did you ever have a teachers aide? If so, How did you feel about it? I have learned so much from her. I worry the school setting she is in is too much for her, however her parents will not budge on other suggestions. They ignore her feelings because she complains about anything. This really frustrates me.

Autism Connection: my 14 year old son is a "high functioning" Autistic

Comments:
I am so proud of you!
I especially relate to what you said about some not thinking you needed help because you are what they choose to call, "high funtioning." My son Alex goes through the same thing.
You are an inspiration!

Autism Connection: 15 year old autistic son

Comments:
You have a wonderful site. As a parent trying to understand and help their autistic child, it has helped me a great deal to read personal autistic experience from yourself and others like you, rather than the so-called professionals. I've learned more about my son in the past month than in all of his 15 years, by reading from sites and books from people on the spectrum. I am entirely in your debt for the light you, and those like you have given me. It would be helpful if auties could point out what perhaps could have been a turning point for them in coming out of their shell, so to speak. ie. to be verbal, show emotion they actually could share, step into "the world", as Donna Willams put it.

Kindest regards
Deb

Autism Connection: Fourteen year old grandson is autistic

Comments:
I have a theory that the presence of autism enhances the development of super-intelligence. Perhaps if these brilliant men were more socially ept, they wouldn't have been capable of the intense focus they utilized to succeed in their fields. For want of a better explanation, I feel that autistic people are simply "wired" differently.
