much thanks for the site.
did you know that the scantily clad model on egyptian gardens cover ( with the green background) is the `famous-in her-time' dancer maya medwar? jamila salimpour named the `upside down `figure eight' for her- maya hips. she was taught the dance by ali reda whom i believe was the brother of mahmoud reda. she tried to teach american dancers that the dance was done by walking through it accents rather driving through it with too much shimmy. that was the era before going to egypt to learn the dance and videos of the legends of the dance. she may be gone by now but those are my memories of her. thank you for your contribution.all the best-belkys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ_S3bxbkAk www.duniaoriental.org Creating an archive in memory of Ibrahim Akef "The great maestro and choreographer died on 9th March 2006. And with him an important part of the history of oriental dance. Who had the privilege to study with Ibrahim Akef will always conserve and treasure his teaching. Yet, this is not enough to keep his memory alive. Important names in oriental dance sustain that there are no filmed images of him. I knew him for years and thanks to the special friendship we had, he allowed me to film him in not one, but three different choreographies, I would like to show these films to oriental dance fans during the "stages" which will be held in Italy and abroad. Moreover, I ask whoever has a filmed image of the maestro in their possession to contact me in order to create a fund and an archive to allow those who did not have the privilege of meeting Ibrahim Akef, to see the art which emanates from his movement and his way of interpretating music. The contribution derived from such an initiative would be an immense enrichment to the understanding of oriental dance. Your site ROCKS, baby!!! (Or should I say, "RAKS"?!) What an incredible job you have done in compiling and making all this wonderful music and information available to us - many, many, many thanks! I, too, am a product of the "old days" (studied in Boston in the '70s with Sudana Odalisque, back in the days of The Averoff; remember seeing Eddie Kochak live various places . . .), and am so delighted to have found your site with all its wonderful, classic music, both old favorites, and so much new to love! During hard times I have always turned to belly dance for beauty and happiness, and now, as I recover from a really bad cancer, I find it brings both calm and energy, and I'm enjoying working out to Radio Bastat. You the best!

My mother used to dance at a Middle Eastern restaurant in Philly with the Ray Mirijanian band and would play Middle Eastern music all the time (as well as play the derbekee) at home so I love listening to the "old sound", it brings back fond memories. Mom is also pictured on the back of one of Ray's albums (A Night in the Middle East Vol 2) dancing.

Thank you RADIO BASTED, I was able to find my old LP "Nawaa'em, Sensual Music for Belly Dance" by George Elias and his Golden Strings, by connecting with a wonderful lady, Sabrina, from Orange County, California.
I had been looking for years and although you don't have it listed, I posted a message here, Sabrina contacted me and she recorded a copy from LP to Cassette. I recently found a friend who remastered it into a CD and I own one of my first LP's all over again. Thanks again Alina

Hi Marisa,
Just say thank you for your wonderfull website. Being a true Belly dance fan I couldn't say less than this. I love both, the music and the dance, even though I don't dance myself as I'am a man and mainly because I'm 50, don't want to break my back (lol). Anyway, I truly apreciate bellydance as a way of expressing freedom and love. Everytime I see someone dancing it's as if a big joy took control of me. Nothing to do with the sensual aspects of belly dance. It's really a deep sense of happiness and beauty. I enjoy every minute at Radio Bastet. And for you all that bellydance, my most sincere and big Thank you! You make me very happy.

Oh what memories come back to me. Around 1967-1973 I spent at least one night a week at the Cafe Feenjon. I had such fun and loved the music. Sometimes I even played the dumbeg when Ali Hafid was on the oud. Was anyone else ever a 'regular' at the Feenjon. How sad that Ali and Menachem and Jerry are gone. They were quite a team, on and off the stage. God bless them!
