Richard Cooper is now a sniper in 1 squadron and has served in Afganistan earlier this year. I was so proud to make it to Wooton Basset a year ago to watch you take the rememberance parade. As you read this the anniversary has passed and I have to say that it was an excellent occasion, a credit to all of you. I have paid good money to see exhibitions far inferior to what you guys did that day. Stay safe, you are all in our prayers Tony |

Never eat rat poison, not even in jest Always remember to look both ways when crossing the rd. Always be the 1st in the NAAFI que Never take your eye of the ball There are many more, with luck some of the old sweats here will pass on other words of wisdom. | Comments: | Ok Folks. The 1 Sqn Anniversary is confirmed. The celebrations will take place on Thursday 3 Nov 2011, so you can plan for that day. The chain of command have agreed that any change at this stage would disrupt many of those members past and present that have already made arrangements. I will post more information with timings nearer the date to again ensure you have accurate information. Needless to say, the celebrations are aimed at starting sometime mid-morning and finishing at approx 1700hrs. The day also coincides with the planned Station Bonfire, so you will have the option of extending your day to take in the firework display in the evening. If you need any further information please ask. http://www.bedandbreakfasts.co.uk/propertysearch.asp?location=RAF+Honington http://www.expedia.co.uk/Hotels |

| Comments: | Hi Johno, yep fine mate all tickity boo here...Hope all's well at your end. I must confess I don't read any of that crap, but as you know some of these keyboard Commandos can be what they want from the comfort of their armchair. Having done both pre-para and P coy, I wouldn't like to say which is the more difficult as you give 100% effort all the time, and you could get through P coy without any navigational skills. Bottom line is each unit has good solid individuals, but also have their fair share of Cocks that go on the internet spouting shite...All the best, Ian. |
| Name: | Johno |
| Comments: | Good post Ian, hope you are well mate, as far as banter goes nothing like it to get people going. Close to knuckle stuff, all for a bit of fun is one thing, but go on tinternet, & type in RAF Regt, & you will find page after page describing our Corps as nothing more than gate guards who like nothing better than to sit about airfields drinking Coke, & getting a tan. The British army rumor service (ARRSE) has devotees who will attack the Regt with such venom you would think they are talking about the Taliban FFS. 99% is so far off the mark it defies belief, that they managed to get into HMF's in the 1st place. Did you know that the RAF Regt is not Inf trained, that we never, patrol outside the wire, in places like NI, Iraq, Afghan. That 2 Sqn only have to pass a BFT on Pre Para to get there wings, & the RAF Regt contribution to the is SFSG is getting scraped due to them not being good enough. Yes I hear you laughing, but throw enough shit at a wall & it sticks, if it was only the occasional, retard who made these sort of comments, then I to would be having a chuckle, but a lot of this is coming from serving soldiers, some SNCO's & even officers. With so many cut backs to HMF's you can see why certain elements would like to see the demise of the Royal Air force Regiment. Still waiting for any of the ARRSE members who take such an interest in our Regt, to drop in here for a we chat. Sean J |

| Comments: | I can echo what Trev's saying as someone that's also served in the Regt and the Army...And I'm sure most of the stuff is just inter unit banter/rivalry, which is healthy. However as a member of the Regt 1984 Cambrian march team I feel the Army cheated us out of winning the event. We felt we were were head and shoulders above anything there, but I don't think we would have been allowed to win, this despite whooping the Para Regt's arse at their 'bread and butter', the stretcher race. Anyway the grapes are starting to taste sour. So I hope none of you lot, FO Embleton, Chris Chandler, Scouse Taylor, Pete Hall, Tash Aitken(RIP),Dave Allen, Taff Campbell, and Mick Donoghue, are as bitter as this Ex Pongo. All the best to those I've served with and be safe to those still serving... |

| Comments: | Please could I ask for some assistance with research into RAF Regiment history? For the past seven years I have been researching the history of RAF Regiment Parachute units from the Second World War until the present day. This covers about thirty different RAF Regiment Airborne units. I hope to have this published and I intend to submit it to the MOD for clearance in the next few weeks. WO Slap Rowlands, the Force Warrant Officer, is keen for me to have it out by II Squadron's 90th Anniversary in July next year. I am trying to include nominal rolls, by year, of all these thirty or so units as most histories only seem to name COs. I have completed much of the ORBATs up until 1980 as unit records are available to read in the National Archives. However, I am having difficulty in completing the ORBATs for II Squadron in the 1980s and early 1990s and for some of the Squadron Parachute Teams (1, 15, 26, 51 and 63 and 3 Wing)at various times in the 1960s and early 1970s. Please could I ask that if anyone who has served in a RAF Regiment Parachute unit could e-mail me with the details of when they served and in what rank so I can complete the ORBATs. The reason for my interest in this subject is because my Dad, Brian, served in the RAF Regiment between 1956-1993, the majority of it on II Squadron. Thanks very much for your help. Graeme Deeley |

I would like to take this opportunity to say to any Pongos who may be looking in, we have been beating you at your own game for a very long time. | Comments: | Well the 70th anniversary of the battle for Crete has just come to an end. It was inspiring to see the Veterans from Grate Britain,Australia & NZ many in there late 90 on parade to remember the fallen of May 1941. My mate Jack Baker now 95 was here, he served on 30 Sqn & made it off the Island after many days walking, constantly under attack from the ground & the air. He is a truly remarkable man, & like so many of his generation very humble about his part in what was one of the defining battles of WW2. Present at many of the ceremonies was the Greek military Veh society, on display was an Otter armored car, from what I can understand it was used by the RAF Regt in 1944 during the Geek campaign, anyone who can tell me more about this part of our history so that I can pass it onto them would be appreciated. I was not the only ex Rock present, a representative from the RAF Regt Association was there to lay a wreath on behalf of the Corps, long over due IMHO considering that Crete was the catalyst to our formation. |

| Comments: | Frank, I think that was him yes!! He was a good bloke though and left a wife, 3 kids and about 5 grandkids I think. It always amazed me how he could make what he did out of the ingredients he had. After working in the tin room a few times, I thought he had a secret stash of grub in another tent because I didn't believe the gear that ended up on the lads plates was the same stuff I was peeling in the back tent! He didn't of course, he was just a genius with both the stuff he had to work with and the field kitchen equipment he cooked it with. |

He served on the South East coast firing his hispano cannon at "jerry" before being sent to Italy and then later Akyab Burma where he finished his war fighting the Japanese. All through his life he maintained an interest in the regiment and some of his last thoughts were of his time in burma and the friends he lost there. | Comments: | Hello all, just to let you know that on May the 20th 2011 will mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Crete. Anyone who is visiting Crete during this time will witness, the last large scale celebration, with veterans coming from NZ, Australia, UK, & Germany. It is well documented that the capture of Maleme air field, & the fall of Crete was the driving force that saw the formation of the RAF Regt. There are many books on the subject, & I would highly recommend Operation Mercury, the author is M G Comeau who served on 30 Sqn. His account tells it from an RAF perspective, but also, gives a very good over view of the hole campaign from invasion to evacuation. I would also like to ask is there anyone who could help me in my search for information regarding what was know as the Air Ministry Experimental Station. This was the early radar, used I believe for the 1st time here on Crete, any information would be greatly received. |

| Comments: | To all Charioteers: past and present. 1 Sqn RAF Regiment will celebrate its 90th Anniversary this year. The date set (provisionally) for the celebrations is 3 Nov 11 at the 1 Sqn Hanger: RAF Honington. I have volunteered to act as Secretary for the 1 Sqn RAF Regiment 90th Anniversary Committee and cordially invite all those who have served on the Sqn to attend. It is obviously still early days, so lots of work to do, but I thought it prudent to give everyone the heads-up early for your own diary admin. So: If you would like to attend, please mail me at the address above and I will add you to the ever growing list. I will send out a formal invite of some sort in the coming months so please add your Name, Address and Post Code to your email. If you could also list the dates served on the Sqn, that will give the current OC an idea of "depth of service" of those attending. I am sure you appreciate, the better knowledge we have of numbers, the better we will be able to admin the day to suit. Believe me; we have a superb day planned. Please pass this on to all those who may not have the ability to read it. Cheers all. I'll keep you informed in the coming months. PON: If numbers become excessive, we may have to streamline folk to X or Y ticket allocation! Cheers Andy. |

| Comments: | LOL ROFL Billy. A Bellend is a Bellend, this is true. OK OK, I have had my fill. My posts were aimed at inspiring conversation (away from what seemed to be ONLY very few almost half-hearted attempts at reunion or the sad news of a fallen brother). Controversial perhaps, but stimulation of conversation all the same. I miss the old school "naughty days" the days when we were able to be ourselves without too much redress. The times when the PC brigade were not known. Times when those we revered had not become officers to enhance their pensions, and still had character not stifled by a Mess they should really not be part of. I miss the months away, but months spent in MANY different places, not just the one deployment. Most of all, I miss the regular banter that, although sometimes confused, was as regular as that comfortable clock that woke me up to spend another great day in the Corps. So, to those I have poked with a tongue in cheek stick, please accept my apology, but thank you for making me laugh as I did some years ago. I raise a glass to the other side of yet another defence review, with the hope that the same colour sits on my head. Per Ardua |

| Comments: | WOW: Billy Baird (or should that be William “Bard” of the Shakespeare Family). I must agree with you, and so poetically put my friend. The posts below from Messrs O’Teefe no O’Tool OOps misread sorry: O'keefe and Geordie S (who ever he is, but a very large, north eastern beer swilling, black and white shirt wearing ex-Somebody or other springs to mind) seem to subscribe exactly to the trend of old. They couldn’t have arrived more timely in this trail of woe. Confirmation then that the OLD never agreed with anyone, especially each other, on ANYTHING. They tended to start a fight with each other after a few beers if there was no one else around to start trouble with! So, as if summoned from beyond the gates of Catterick, one waffles on about the army, which the RAF Regiment are not, never have been and should never be, and the other gets a monk on and starts arguing with the first!! Unbelievable isn’t it or, as the first post attempted to express, not unbelievable at all!! William, your measured post has indeed satisfied my quest for sense. Thank you, my case is rested. Until next time. |
| Name: | Billy Baird |
| Comments: | Well said Geordie. I'm bored reading crap written by squaddies from many different units, including the RAF Regiment. Do people honestly believe the hype? Some people stay in for 22 years or join SF units, some people get out after a few years and get new careers. So what? And fair play to the guys risking their lives in the middle east and beyond, but a little bit of dignity and grace wouldn't go amiss sometimes. I was listening to Geoffrey Wellum recently telling stories about The Battle of Britain and, his self-effacing attitude was very different from some of the self-aggrandising that's popular with some squaddies at the moment. |
| Name: | Geordie S. |
| Comments: | Kelly, you are not exactly helping our cause with statements like that! Christ half the guys in the corps weren't even in school in the 80's! There was always an exchange program between us and the Marines. About your comments about 22, yes there were some rocks there and still are but they are very much in the minority compared to other Army units. Can everyone please just think before they publish stuff on public forums? Make a twat of yourselves but leave the Corps out of it please! |

They have indeed honed their "sprog bashing" and Bully-boy tactics over the years to such an extreme that no one, let alone a yella no name dickhead like me, could hack it. Yet again I am feeling worthless and walk backwards with head bowed in awe of those wonderful "Men" of the RAF Regiment drinking club. Please forgive me Tough///I mean Taff. If only I could be as "drunken and bar room brawl-like" as those of OLD. SIGH. The Corps is so proud of them all and their brothers in drink. I'm off the site for a bit BUT please keep the reunions, AND especially the details of the reunions going, so real RAF Reg' can avoid the RV at all cost. (NEXT SUBJECT, The OLD school gang and their total inability to hack it in the modern RAF Regiment, hence why many of them have fucked off now we are deploying on REAL Ops) |

| Comments: | oooo Mr Jones, I bet you even scare yourself in the Mirror in the morning?? (or more likely reading the Mirror scares you with it's joined up words) The case is rested would you not say - the threat of violence indeed intimates I have hit a raw nerve. Have you been off the pop for a few hours, is that the problem Hey Hey??? Oh and WHAT WAR are you referring to? The Cold War where the afore mentioned drunks went too and or were living IN Germany drinking even more or their chosen poison or the War where the Yanks led the way and we just held their jackets? (That's the same one where no Sqn had actual contact with the enemy by the way FACT). So, as Frank advises, calm down you are not doing the Regiment any favours by gobbing off on what was a decent site before the old drunks took it over. Perhaps you could use one elelment of the Corps Motto and adopt it for the drinking gang "Drunk, Gobby and Useless,as PER usual" |

To all the EX-old drunks who spent their "career" drinking and generally being less than useful, do you not think that the closure is a trend you should perhaps follow??
