SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE, A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL, AND WE BOTH SHIVERED, FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL. I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE, ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR, SO WILLING TO FIGHT. | Comments: | To Alice Bonness, hi Alice,you wont remember me as i only stayed over at your house once, years ago when you lived off kings acre, there was some really nice tributes paid to your dad on tims RAF Regt site after the 23rd of Feb this year, But tim who runs the site has to periodically wipe a couple of months to make room for us all to chat.Like stevie G I tried to send a message to your email address ,but had no joy ,so i will have to put it on here. But i was talking about your dad to some people whilst out on a job in the malaysian rain forest two weeks ago,because i was wearing a para-silk hooded top that your dad gave me years an years ago, anyway i was with a man called "son of babin" who was a 70year old tribal elder of the "orang Asli", who are the aborigine people of the malaysian rain forest,and who is a total jungle ninja, well me,paul cockroft and your dad gave loads of kit away once before, on our little Nepalese adventure,to the porters who didnt have much and would use what we gave everyday. And i know what a feel good factor we both had from that, so keeping with tradition i gave "bonnys" top to "son of babin", because i knew your dad would be chuffed to bits knowing that his kit is with this man an still running about the rainforest, like i said though i was talking to this man, but via a translator and i told him "this came from a very special man and im sure he would want you to have it" and he was very ,very, quietly grateful. i will send you some photos when i get them in a week or so. well please pass on my best wishes to Anna and your sisters and understand that your Dads memory and spirit is still very much a part of all that had the privilege to meet and know him. adios amigo Tommy Doherty |

| Comments: | Well, I would just like to start by sending my love to Roy's family at his sudden departure from you and us. I intended to attend the funeral but alas, had to fly overseas on that day. I'm Sorry. Having visited this site for the first ever, i was so happy to read and reflect upon an old airborne friend of mine, who remains within me for ever. And for those of you who do not know of me, it's because i and Mark Williams (Willy) would always strive in who could portray Royston the best. I have been laid her laughing at the stories about this legend and as i have read, i have been speaking in his voice, 'YOU NEVER DID' Chris, the story of Roy and yourself walking across the parade square at akrotiri, had tears dripping down my face. I'll always remember that man, the stories. I recall walking into the Phoenix NAAFI and seeing Roy sat there with a brandy and coke in his hand. On asking him if he fancied a top up, Roy would always say no. And as soon as i started to order he would should, Oh go on then, Fuck it. On sitting down with Roy and our drinks, i prompted the question to try and pinch a fag out of the legend. To which i got the compulsory answer of 'Nige look at that, I brought out 200 fags tonight and I've only got 1 left' at which point Roy would place the packet back into his top shirt pocket. This would continue throughout the night and still Roy, (although smoking throughout) would have that solitary fucking cigarette in its box in his top pocket. Only once did i catch him, and i think i may have been one of a handful who knew, that the legend kept his smokes in his socks and when confronted by this discovery, Roy would simply say to me 'Nige, quickly under the table, under the table. But don't tell anybody right. Roy, my friend, I've waited until now to release this mate, i think they're duty free up there. I'll miss you. Respect Nige P.S, 'I've never known i night like it' |
