Comments:I was in Nam 68-69 and was a Spec 5 dozer operator. There was an operation I was sent to, I believe it was north of Cua- Viet. Our mission was to go with an armoured company to Ba Long valley. Went up river by boat. After joining the tank company, we traveled a day and a 59th Rome Plow and operator joined us. I believe he was a Spec6! I did not know there could be such a thing. I talked to him briefly but we had to get to work to bury the armor for the evening. We were on a duckbill point overlooking the river when as he was pushing dirt up to the last tank, he got hit by a rocket from across the river. It was powerful enough to punch holes through the blade, radiator shroud, top of the dash, and top of the fuel tank.He was hurt very bad as some of the shrapnell got him as well ... It took a while for dustoff because the tanks artilery and jets burned out about 5to 10 acres of jungle on the other side of the river. I never got to know who he was. I think he was still alive when they took him away ...Inever heard whether he made it or not! Could someone tell me? I think about this often,, Would sure like to knouw... You guys sure did bushwhack some Land!!! I wish I could have been with you more often.

Comments:Good Morning guys,
For those who know me, and for the ones who don't, I just want to say thank you for keeping the Reunion Idea going. When I first made contact with Tim and all of you, I never knew this would get so big. All I ever wanted when I began this was to give you men a chance to reunite and hopefully to begin a healing process and to let you know that regardless of how you were treated when you can home and most likely still are today that at least someone thinks of you and appreciates your sacrifice.
Plus I can't complain about all of the hugs I got in Texas...{BIG SMILE!}.

May God Keep you,
Hazel

Comments:I severed in Vietnam from Jan 69 to 3 Mar 70. I was an Rome Plow Operator most of my tour. I had an accident and hurt my right leg so I drove the fuel truck for a couple months then back on the plow until two days prior departing Vietnam. I ETSed and stayed out for about a year and then returned to the military. I stayed for 26 years before retiring as a Combat Engineer with the rank of Sergeant Major. I think about Vietnam daily and the Soldiers I served with. No matter how many times you talk about Land Clearing or the Rome Plows the veterans know what you did and how hard everyone worked. In this Soldier’s opinion YOU are HEROs.

I have a complete set of Division TOC reports from October 1967-November 1971. And all the Americal Division ORLL reports, hundreds of articles published by the Americal Division IO, lots published by Stars & Stripes, Army Reporter and etc. We have videos, maps, and etc. The data base currently fits on 4 DVDs. I think I recall transcribing articles about the 59th land clearing company. I would be interested in obtaining a copy of the unit book you have posted. We provide copies of the unit books to veterans who request information for a unit when we have a book available on CD or DVD format. Leslie Hines; 817 41st St. Des Moines, IA, 50312-2609. Comments:I served with C Btry 5th Bn 4th Arty on FSB C-2 as the Fire Direction Officer and then as the Battery XO from Sept. 1969 until Sept. 1970. In November, 1969 the NVA crossed the DMZ in large numbers and C-2 and A-4 (Con Thien) were taking incoming 120mm rockets daily. Our Bn HQ at Quang Tri told us that we could expect a ground attack on C-2 and A-4. A unit from the 59th was brought in to clear the land to the west; northwest; and north of C-2. Your unit performed
the land clearing in an outstanding maner. Due to your land clearing work the NVA did not have the ground cover that would have allowed them to advance undetected to the wire at C-2. Thus the NVA cancelled the ground attack C-2 and A-4. Thank you for a job well done and Welcome Home!!

This sweeper was not with you guys long and I remember he had glasses. It had to be around June or July of 1970, He stepped on a mine and I administered first aid to him until a medivac arrived. When we were growing up our family was not close and now that we are all grown we are trying to get closer. I love my brother and am so proud of all that he has done. He truely is a Great American. Just remember to stay in touch with your family and hold on to all the memories you can because life truely is short. Everyone grows up to fast and gets involved in their own lives. Don't forget your family they are what counts.

Comments:HI, My father, Lacy Simpson served only a short time. It just took two short months for him to step on a land mine. July 10, 1970. I thank Tim so much for giving me some details on what happened that day. I was only 6 at the time. Daddy was an "old" man when it happened, he was 40 at the time. Tim said he was there that day and they always wondered what happened to Daddy. Daddy has lived a great life. He lost both legs above the knee, two fingers on his right hand and damaged both ear drums. He has fished, hunted, drove trucks, vans, tractors, 4 wheelers, raised a garden, dug fence posts, drank and smoked. He has some health issues over the past 10 years and has bounced back 100 percent every time. He even lives by himself now. I do not remember him anyother way and to me it was an eye opener when I met Tim. It made me completely understand how special my father is. Please if you remember him, give me the stories; good and bad. THANK you to all that served. Ellen S. Childress

I injured my right knee and got no treatment, but a couple of days of light duty. I know it isn't exactly a noble war wound, but I've had 9 operations since, including 2 artificial knees. Naturally the VA denied my claim. Most of the guys I was tight with had already gone home, and frankly I can't remember the roster of players in a pickup volleyball game 37 years ago. Sorry for the bitchin'. Hope y'all do well and that you and yours don't have to wrestle with the VA (though I know many have had it far worse than me).

Some of us had been with the 573rd Engineer Float Bridge
Battalion. When I got in country in October 68 the 573rd
was deactivating. I was assigned a 5 ton bridge truck and
made some runs to Newport docks and brought supplies back
to Long Binh. In late 68 the word came down that there was
going to be a new land clearing battalion formed and they
needed 10 ton drivers. Volunteering was a no brainer for me. We were a motley bunch but fit in well with the plow
companies and the 'Gypsy' lifestyle suited me just fine.
I enjoyed this site immensely. It is by far the best that I've seen.

He died of radiation induced leukemia on December 10, 1996. He was born November 18, 1944. He was on active duty in Panama when diagnosed with leukemia. The Army took SEVEN months to approve his bone marrow transplant and approved it only after a letter writing campaign to Congress. By that time, his leukemia had advanced to the point where it would be much more difficult to cure. He was one of the victrms of POOR HEALTH CARE FOR SOLDIERS. I encourage those in his unit to write letters to Congress and inform them that soldiers DESERVE THE VERY BEST HEALTH CARE, NOT THE WORSE. Criminals receive better care then our soldiers!

Comments:I experience memory loss as a result of my injuries, and was absolutely blown away when I received a letter in the mail from Butch Bowman 35 years after I left the War. I am so grateful to be remembered as a member of the greatest unit ever to serve in the Nam. I still have my "Professional Land Clearers" watch fob from CAT. Serving in the 59th was a life changing event for me, that I cherish. Thank you so much for remembering me. I am truly honored. I woould love to attend a reunion to make new friends of old ones. Please forgive me if I don't recall your names.

Remember, Tiny, John Fellerman, Dave Slonaker, Kent Yoder, saw Ken this year, Frank Pendergrass, Sgt Iggy or Itchy, Boston Bob, George of the Jungle, and I have a bunch of pic's of the Dozers. I operated #93. Got the rabies, the big fight at the motor pool with all the Korean dancers, and so on. Just got a letter from Merrill Bowman and will give him a call and Kent's contact info. Thanks for setting up the site. Frank

I can't recall month but one of your mine sweepers hit a booby trap and I gave him first aid until medivac arrived. I never heard who he was or how he made out. Does anyone recall any such incidents. This has always haunted me for all these years and I would appreciate any response. Thank You
