| Comments: | Hello all. I would like to graciously update my findings for all Randy fans. I have successfully nailed the Randy Rhoads tone and here's how I did it. I used my stepdad's late 70s Marshall JMP MASTER VOLUME MK2 amp. Master volumes are great, all that great crunch at any level, just crank the preamp up and control the volume with the master volume control....ANYWAYS.....
Here are the official Randy Rhoads amp settings for his Marshall JMP Super Lead Plexi, though it works great with my amp, the Master Volume as well... Presence: 5 Bass: 2 Middle: 5.5 Treble: 7 Volume I: 6 Volume II:6 Note that Volume I and II is just Preamp Volume, so set that to 6 and then set your Master Volume to whatever you like. Above 4 or so is good. Anything higher than 6 isnt really necessary. I got these settings from the official Marshall 1959RR manual so now I share them with all of Randy's loyal fans :) Now I run my guitar signal (Gibson Les Paul Studio/Jackson Rhoads) into a Crybaby Wah, then an MXR Distortion + set to full or sometimes half distortion, then an MXR 10 Band EQ set to heavy Mid Boost (check the Jim Dunlop site for accurate settings) then through an MXR Flanger and Stereo Chorus (both not all that necessary) and then into the Marshall JMP and boom, perfect Randy tone! Last note, Randy's Marshall as I stated before was Cascade modded, luckily most of the late 70s Marshall JMPs are already Cascade modded, which is why I easily nailed the tone. If you have an earlier model or just have a JMP SLP, then you will have to have your local amp tech cascade it for you. Since 1998 I have been trying consistantly to get the Randy tone and now I have finally achieved it. RIP Randy Rhoads, the greatest guitar player EVER. |

| Comments: | You stated you werent sure if Randy's amps were modded or not, actually they were. His white Marshall was cascade modded. Thats not all that was done to get his tone, he had a different transformer, etc...but the famous "one wire mod" was done to his head, which many other players have done as well. Martin Golub from LA Sound Design does this very well, as he does this mod for Green Day's amps. I am looking to do the mod myself to my Marshall JMP MK2 Master Volume.

Gifted guitar player, but stood in the darkness thru a good part of the show. My 1st concert with Motorhead opening. Saw them again on the Diary tour at the Los Angeles Forum, WOW!!!! The show, Theatrics, and presentation was amazing!! No back shadows. Randy stole the show in every way!!! He was in full bloom!!!!!!!The eletricity in the air that night was undeniable and I have not felt that since! One of the best showman, guitarist and concerts I have ever been too!! | Comments: | I have loved Randy since the day I first heard him. I got into Ozzy around the time of "Diary of a Madman". As soon as I put the needle to the vinyl I was hooked! It was as if I could accually feel what he was playing and his work makes the hair on my arm stand up to this day. When he died, a part of me was lost, and I never met the guy. But he still speaks to all of us through his music, which will never die! I am hoping that someday concert footage from the tour with Ozzy will be released in a professional format (I have some bootlegs). I know that there has to be great footage out there somewhere for this to happen. I never got to see Randy live and I would love to see a full length concert and have it for my collection. So I hope it happens soon. A lot of great guitarists have come along but there will never be another Randy Rhoads. God bless you Randy where ever you are. |

I am a rock guitar player, I was born in 1955, I belong to the same generation of Randy, Eddie Van Halen (1956)and Michael Schenker (1957) I specially like Randy because he was a very inspiring person and musician for me, an incredible an fine rocker, but he also loved the classical guitar, like your humble. it was a very tragic day, the day he died. I still listen the Ozzy cd's with him and still think how incredible was his style, his technical level, his sound and his music vocabulary. God bless him, and God bless Dolores Rhoads (his mather) because she always support Randy and help him to realize his dream, and also thanks to Ozzy, for Black Sabbath and for discover and bring Randy to us. |

| Comments: | When the Tribute album came out in the 80s Randy Rhoads in a way proved to me that there is life after death. He was a musician in the truest sense of the word, not just a technician like so many others who were completely unable to fill the gap, except, of course, Ritchie Blackmore. So for a long time I ranked Randy the third best guitarist ever. Before that it was Rory Gallagher. I'm pretty sure Randy Rhoads will always remain under the ten best. I say this because the music did not die with him and we should look into the future and expect other great ones. Music is for NOW and not for the past. Sorry if Randy is not my one and only god.

I remember placing the phone real close to my guitar as I played it for my old guitar teacher after I had moved very far away (around 1,000 miles or so). Good memories. Been a while since then but still pull out Dee maybe once a year and play through. A great piece of music for sure. Randy I heard was on his way to UCLA to study guitar right before he died. | Comments: | My first exposure to Music other than my mom's beatles albums, was a friend who gave me a copy of Blizzard of Oz. I was immediately entranced. I saw this same friend playing a beat up acoustic, and desparately trying to pluck out Dee. It was at that moment that my life changed forever. I have spent Hundreds of hours, trying to master randy's style. There can be only one randy, and I Know I will never compare. I am sure that he plays for the angels now, and has god banging his head. Randy has always been my inspiration, and though we never met, I Miss him.
Randy understood Music, Not like todays guitarists, who bang on a guitar in drop D , and call it music. He was a true Musician, in the most pure sense. I have often said, Music is the hearts way of being heard, I have made my fingers bleed, playing crazy train, and I have come to tears and cramped hands mastering Dee, And I loved every second. Thank you randy....For making me a Guitarist, For giving me the challenge, and for the hours of banging my head. | Comments: | I first truly got to 'know' Randy in a Guitar Player Magazine article, and what impressed me most was his dedication to his music and his down to earth nature. In all of the articles and interviews I read he always came across as being more into the music and not into the whole "Rock Star" experience; he was indeed different.

I seen Randy on the "diary" tour in early Feburary about 6 to 7 weeks before he passed away in Detroit. I have a "diary" concert jersey with the whole band's picture in front (Randy, Tommy, Ozzy, and Rudy) and the back is a picture of the U.S. with a dagger through in with blood splatter all over the place. I was going to put in in a picture frame and hang it. I quit wearing the shirt when Randy left us. But now, after a couple of decades I'm ready to sell it on E-bay. I've checked E-bay and haven't seen one on there yet. So check E-bay from aroung April 3, 2006 on, 'cause I'm going to your local "I sold it on E-bay" stores, and getting out there for you fans. | Comments: | I'm kind of looking for some help on how to get the Rhoads tone. I know there's a whole section in here about it, but this guy has a bass amp so its probably pretty different. I have a marshall 3203 artist head and a 1965a 4x10 cab. If anyone has any additional help on how to set up the knobs on the amp that'd greatly help. Also, do you have to change the eq pedal alot because he only describes how to do it on his bass amp? Also if you have any additional tips, please help.
