We chased the Russians around Cuba, which interruppted our shakdown cruise after the yards in Charleston in 69. I remember the yellow house dead ahead when the fog lifted when leaving Boston harbor, getting stuck on a sandbar in Charleston harbor when we returned from Nam 3 after Lt. "stumbling Stu" passed a nukie sub coming into port. Boy did he get a butt chewing from both COs. Even took a couple of hours to dislodge an old anchor when we were in Ethiopia after Nam 3 around the world cruise. Sidney, Auckland, Tahiti, Rio and many more... |

| Comments: | Just a few comments. I came on board when the ship was at sea trials in Gitmo. The next to the last day, and nobody wanted a green seaman on board at that time. I was as close to being a plank owner without being one. I had some great times on board the Wainwright. The first two Westpac cruises that the ship went on. If anyone is interested, I know the story of how the ship was "sold" while sitting along side pier Papa. And I could tell you how a seabag looks when it is fired out of a torpedo tube. | Comments: | Study on Agent Orange Supports Blue Water Navy Coverage The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recently released the "Veterans and Agent Orange: Health Effects of Herbicides Used in Vietnam (VAO)" report that recommends the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) change its definition of Vietnam service. Evidence referenced included a study conducted by the Royal Australian Navy, which supports a broader definition. The report recommends that members of the Blue Water Navy be included in "the set of Vietnam-era veterans with presumed exposure." FRA has long opposed the VA's current restrictive policy of "boots on the ground" for granting veterans for service connected disorders under the presumptive classification of herbicide exposure. Members are urged to go to the FRA Action Center (www.fra.org) to ask their US Representative to support H.R. 2254, sponsored by Rep. Bob Filner (Calif.) that will reverse the VA's decision that prevents the "Blue Water Navy" military retirees and veterans from claiming presumptive status for the diseases associated with Agent Orange exposure. |

If anybody remembers Dave (blonde, dimpled, enthusiastic he was to serve his country) from his time in VietNam, please contact me at the above e-mail address. Especially if you happen to remember having seen him him in the time frame of Aug 2-4 1968 in Danang Air Base, or any other time on dry land, or has knowledge of any in-water stay or dry-land stay of this ship's crew. Or if you happen to know whether this ship was Blue or Brown Navy, how close it was to shore and / or whether Agent Orange exposure was possible. My husband was granted disability status 6 years ago, but the VA is saying - now that Dave passed away - that it was possibly done in error, and that no records can be found. A copy of the ship-log has been requested from the archive, but is not yet issued at this time (takes some time, I guess). I appreciate any information, any memories as I am trying to cope with the enormous empty space he leaves behind in my heart, piece together my hubby's life, atop of fighting for survivor benefits. Dave was a loving, caring person with sharp intellect and a wonderful sense of humor, a superb husband, a great and loyal friend, and the light of my life. I am heart broken, and regardless from the VA claim's outcome, would be grateful for any shared memories. There must be somebody who remembers him, he was a radar operator. He hailed from Illinois. Thinking he was not doing enough for the Vietnam War he transferred into Swift Boat Duty. Pete was captured by the NVA up at the DMZ and was dragged out into the water and drowned. Med Cruises, Fleet Week, Drug Ops off coast of Florida, And unfortunetly decommissioning her. To any of the ADMIN guys and Master Chief Boon. I will always remember the great times we had on that ship. I worked my way up the ranks and was Medically discharged in 2004 for taking a bullet to my chest in Nicuragua. I had to have open heart surgery and replace my valves. Special Ops I was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 31. Anyway I sure as hell miss that ship. | Comments: | Hello, I was in 4th division, maintain the ANSPG55 CWAT radar and we used Terrier missile. I was on the security guard force on the ship and lost my hearing when the five inch gun aft fired while on roving patrol above decks and I did not heard the one MC because I was in the radar room on the O five deck checking the equipment. So I have a 40db hearing loss. Worked as an electronics engineering after I left the US Navy and now I am disabled from the automotive industry....stress....I should have stay in the Navy, civilian life sucks, but I made $82,000 a year self education. So I used to shoot missiles and now I can design them. God Blessings to All! Jim FTM-2 |

For any of you that remember me..I was always a pain in OS1 Vargas, and Coontz's ass! I skated from unrep numerous times while at sea..and had my hiding spot on the 04 level. Fat Willy was my best friend (OS3 Williamson), and I maintain close contact with him still to this day. After 911...I actually considered coming back in. I work in Forensics now...but I do miss the ocean! I hope you all are well! |
