Comments:This was entered on behalf of Thomas A Foster who was so proud of his time aboard the USS Wainwright. He was on board during WW2 though I am not sure the exact years. Sadly he passed away last week and we laid him to rest today. He was a great man and will be missed but not forgotten. From his Grandson RC

We had one day away from the group when we shared a day with my brother and family in St Augustine, kind of reminded me of San Juan. You folks are the finest. I am pleased to have you on my life's trip, and I on your's. Bless you all and keep safe. I am bucking for Louisville for a reunion, next. Hugs, JC and Nancy

I watched her leave more times than I can remember but was also there on the pier in Charleston everytime she pulled back in. Rick Loxterman who was also aboard the same years wife (ex) Laura and I became good friends during that time and are still in contact to this day. Laura and I always joked that the CG actually stood for Constantly Gone. I just really wanted to say hello to anyone that remembers us.

Comments:Time is running very short to make your reservation at the Crowne Plaza for our reduced rate. June 30th was an arbitrary date set by the sales manager. After nearly two years of keeping this biennial reunion information flowing to you either in newsletters (printed and e-newsletter style)web site and personal phone calls from me, sufficient time has elapsed to make your reservations. If you decide to visit us while we're at the Crowne Plaza, don't forget to help defray the costs of our hospitality room snacks and refreshments by paying your registration fees. Don't forget to check the Crews Deck Log>Reunion Informatioin>Who Will Be Among the First 30. I will keep the list current on a weekly basis.

Comments:Time is running short to send us your registration forms. We need to know how many will be on each of the tours that have been made available to us. We booked an extra bus for each of the tours well before the price of fuel escalated to their current levels. This helped to keep the price of the tours at the lowest possible price. The tour company will hold these buses only to a certain date which is getting very close to happening. If we must eliminate any of the buses, only those who were first to send us their registration forms indicating the tour selections will be ensured of a seat. I will post more information on the Crews Log Book.

Comments:Added some new posts to the Crews Log Book concerning the reunion. I haven't contacted the Crowne Plaza in a couple of weeks so I've not updated the list of shipmates/spouses who have registered there lately. Spare time has been a rare commodity here as it is every spring time for me. The core message here is to ask you to avoid procrastination by making your rservations at the CP before it becomes too late. We are guaranteed 30 rooms at the moment with the favorable rate we were able to negotiate. We over half way there the last time I updated the list and this is without the benefit of having the printed newsletter in the mail. With a credit card, you can make your reservation without worrying about being charged until your reserved date begins. IF you don't make a reservation soon and the number of registrations suddenly exceed thirty, tack on $40/night at a minimum unless you wish to stay away from the reunion site. Please take advantage of the negotiated prices that we have secured for our shipmates and spouses. We've visited many fine hotels in the area but you will not find a better value.

Comments:After the completion of the decommissioning of the Franklin D. Roosevelt in Norfolk, Va., I reported to the Wainwright just before the major yard period which was still underway when my enlistment expired near the end of 1974. I was lucky enough to enjoy some at sea exercises to Guantanamo and The Virgin Islands before we buddied up with the yard birds of Charleston. After a relaxing stop at St. Thomas, we were making a bee line to the equator for some Shellback fun, but were called back to Guantanamo just short of a crossing. I remain a polywog to this day... I fondly remember the mid watch when I had the important job of "Sound and Security", and "mid-rats" when the phillipino cooks would re-heat the left-over rice dishes. And I will never forget the thrill of running the "needle gun" paint chipper!

Comments:I have been adding to a list of 2008 reunion attendees in the Crews Log Book (forum. All of the names added are those who have made reservations at the Crowne Plaza. We are currently finalizing our reunion plans and assembling the information for a newsletter. It will be mailed to all shipmates with tour and meal selections and prices. This same newsletter will be posted on this web site as for those who do not receive a newsletter in the mail.

Comments:I am saddened to see the ship scrapped and sunk. i wanted to get off the USS Wainwright-DLG-28. I was a 19 year old, immachure and mouthy. I can't imagine, the ship like me "Got old". It looked great inside, out side it was tore up from age. So many time i painted the out side of the ship, from the Bow to the stern. I took pride in that ship, even though i wanted desperately to get off of it. Goodbye USS Waignwright, soon I will be gone also. with two major deadly cancers and dead kidneys. I will soon be gone. I loved the beauty of the ship.

Any how the fifth story is about Operation Praying Mantis. There are many good quotes from Capt. Chandler, Adm. Crowe, OS1 Vargas, OSC McCullough and many others. It made me feel like we were back in action for those of us who were there. God Bless the best reef in the ocean!

Comments:I spend a good deal of my "free-time" searching for ways to pass the word about the upcoming reunion in Jax this July. In my searches, I've run across some sites that will allow me to post our reunion information as soon as I become a paying member. Not being a person who is willing to bet that my registration fee followed by our reunion information will locate a shipmate who hasn't already heard or read about it, I'm hesitant to spend my personal funds. If you are a dues paying member of any of these 'buddy locator' or a 'classmates finder' sites, will you help me spread the word? Drop me a line at my e-mail address which is provided here so I can supply you with the contact information. Thank you, shipmates!

Comments:Periodically I place names of shipmates who have registered with the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Jacksonville. I have added additional names today in the Reunion Update section of the (Forum)Crews Log Book. Look under the subheading "Who will be the first thirty?" If you are planning to attend, please take the time to contact them sooner rather than later. A great deal of planning goes into our reunion activities with numbers of attendees an important segment for us to consider. We have travelled to Jacksonville four times in the past six years to personally deal with various hotels and tour companies. Will you please consider taking a few minutes to register? Most of the reunion information can be found in the latest newsletter available on this web site. A pre-reunion printed newsletter will be compiled in mid-February for a March mailing with the last bit of information concerning the reunion along with a separate registration form to be mailed back to us.

Comments:Well it's Thanksgiving already, The Wainwright was well represented during the Charlotte, NC Veterans Day parade with a VFW float and the ship's banner that was on Channel 9 News in the evening. The highlight of the day, an actual Wainwright shipmate ran out of spectators on side of street and told me that he had not talked to a shipmate in thirty weeks. It was as good for me as it was, I believe, for that shipmate. Unfortuniately I did get his name. Happy Thanksgiving.

Comments:I must say that it was a honor to be able to serve my country on such a great ship as the USS Wainwright DLG-28. This web site is a fitting source for renewing a lot of fond memories. Best of luck to all.
